TEST RUN REPORT

EXPERIMENT NO. : 5

EXPERIMENT TITLE: CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM

PROBLEM: -
SUGGESTION: - make sure conical flask used for part C is completely dry.
- Use 50ml beaker to mix the CoCl2 solution with HCl in part B instead of conical flask.
- Use black sugar paper during titration

PROCEDURE:

RESULT AND OBSERVATION:

PART A

Fe3+(aq) + SCN- [Fe(SCN)]2 + (aq)

Experiment Observation

I. Additional of 1 mL 0.1 M Fe(NO3)3 Colour intensity of red increase

II. Additional of 1 mL 0.1 M KSCN Colour intensity of red increase

III. Additional of 6-8 drops of 2.5M NaOH Colour intensity of red decrease and turned
yellowish brown, rusty brown precipitate
formed.

PART B

TEST TUBE Experiment Observation

I At room temperature Purple solution

II 0 0C in ice bath Purple solution turned pink

III 80-90 0C Purple solution turned blue

IV Room temperature Test Tube II – Pink solution to purple

Test Tube III – Blue solution to purple

PART C

Equation of the reaction is as following

SbCl3 + H2O (l) SbOCl (s) + 2HCl (aq)

Initial burette reading = 7.50 mL

Final burette reading = 21.10 mL

Volume titrated 13.60 ml to change the colourless solution turned milky.

Moles of SbCl3 = 5.0×10−3 L × 0.5 molL−1 = 2.50×10−3 mol

Final volume = 5 + 13.60mL = 18.60 mL = 0.0186 L
Thus, [SbCl3] = 2.50×10−3 mol = 0.134M
0.0186 L

Moles of HCl = 5.0×10−3 L × 6 molL−1 = 3 ×10−2 mol

Final volume = 5 + 13.60mL = 18.60 mL = 0.0186 L
Thus, [HCl] = 3 ×10−2 mol = 1.62M
0.0186 L

Equilibrium constant: Kc = [HCl]2

[SbCl3]

= (1.62)2 = 19.59
0.134
