Facebook Meta: Its Influence to the Mental Health of Grade
12 ICT Panganiban in Balayan Senior High School

CHAPTER I

RESEARCH PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social media usage has risen dramatically, changing the way people

relate, communicate, and live. It offers a platform for its users to share

information and spread awareness regarding various issues including

mental health problems.

Additionally, in some previous studies it was found that people

suffering from mental health issues benefited from social media. However,

the use of social media is also significantly associated with increased

depression, mood and anxiety disorders in adolescents.

Meanwhile, Facebook is the most often used social networking site

worldwide with almost 3 billion users. Many of these users engage in

intense Facebook use by spending a lot of time on Facebook, having a

substantial number of friends on Facebook, and feeling emotionally

connected to the Facebook. Nonetheless, as Facebook Meta has grown in

popularity, researchers have begun expressing concern about its impact on

Mental Health. Most broadly a sizeable increase in the number of students

who reported mental distress at some time in the preceding year.

With this background, this study was taken up to contribute to the

scarce literature about the influence social media has on the mental well-

being of students. Furthermore, this study focuses on determining the

influence of Facebook Meta to the mental health of Grade 12 ICT

Panganiban students in Balayan Senior High School, and it intends to give

the students proper knowledge on how to avoid the Facebook drawbacks in

mental health.

The study used the (Input-Process-Output) IPO model by Tyler to

strengthen the understanding about the influences of Facebook Meta to the

mental health of the students.

The research paradigm of the study is shown in Figure 1. The first

box contained the input variables such as the positive and negative impacts

of Facebook Meta in the mental health of students, the reason why students

need to control their Facebook Meta usage, and the ways to avoid the

negative influences of Facebook meta to the mental health of the students,

Then an arrow is drawn going to the second box which is called the

process box. It pertained on how data were gathered through interview and

interpretation of data. From the second box, an arrow is down to the output

box which contained the main objective of the study: to present the findings

through the use of Facebook Meta page.

Review of Related Literature

Research literature

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies

after thorough and in-depth search done by the researchers.

I. Influences of Facebook meta in the Mental health of the students

In recent years there have been an abundance of studies conducted

by professionals that focus on social media usage and mental health.

Additionally, a number of researchers have explored possible connections

between the use of Facebook as well as other social networking sites and

Mental health.

According to Mentalhelp.net (2023), Facebook and other social media

platforms can be beneficial for person with social anxiety because they

provide them the chance to build social contacts online without the stress

that real-world encounters entail. It was supported by Supermind platforms,

Inc, (2022), when they stated that Facebook connectivity is linked to

reduced levels of anxiety and despair and higher levels of life satisfaction.

Moreover, many support groups for students going through difficult

times may be found on Facebook. These group are especially helpful for

those who do not live in an area where meetings are scheduled or who are

more likely to use an online platform owing to privacy concerns,

Mentalhelp.com (n.d).

Furthermore, based in the investigation of Lethart (2010), extraverted

people are highly sociable, rewards-driven, and reward-seeking, and

Facebook offers plenty of chances for active self-presentation and social

interaction. It has been demonstrated that extraverted people use social

networking sites to meet their needs for self-presentation, mood

enhancement, maximizing positive affect, and social connection and

communication.

Likewise, Facebook meta may offer new ways for students to engage

in positive and meaningful social interactions, such as through virtual

communities or shared experiences. This could help to boost mood and

increase feelings of social connectedness.

9
It is important to note, however, that social media use can also have

negative effects on mental health, such as increased feelings of anxiety or

depression.

According to BMC Psychology (2022), many have been worried that

heavy Facebook may have a harmful influence on mental health and even

be a factor in the current rise in depression rates seen in society. A large

number of studies have been conducted to examine whether this concern is

justified.

Furthermore, based in the investigation of Verduyn (2022), the ability

to scroll indefinitely on Facebook may cause feeling of flow and warped

perceptions of time. Being totally absorbed in an activity is referred to as the

experience of flow, and it has been demonstrated that this state is linked to

problematic use of social networking sites.

Thus, Facebook use foretells losses in subjective well-being,

including how pleased people are with their lives and how they feel in the

moment.

II. Ways to avoid the negative influences of Facebook Meta in the

Mental health of the students

People became susceptible to the negative impacts of social media;

thus, it could make them expect the worst in every situation. However, they

can prevent some of the negative effects of social media and learn to

position their social media in a way that serves them positively.

According to Everydaypower.com (2022), a study found that users are

more likely to experience a sense of community and inclusion on social

media when they are actively posting, commenting, enjoying, sharing

material, photographs, status update, and comments can be seen in at least

two different ways.

Additionally, encouraging students to limit their use of social media

and set specific times for using Facebook meta may lessen the adversities

that could be experienced in using the app. This can help reduce the

amount of time spent scrolling through feeds, which can be a major source

of stress and anxiety.

In addition, as students interact with others in person instead of

relying solely on social media for socialization, building stronger

relationships and reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation may foster.

Students need to prioritize self-care activities like exercise, meditation, and

spending time in nature. These activities can help reduce stress and anxiety

and improve overall mental health. (insert citation)

III. Importance of Controlling Facebook Meta Usage

According to Claudia Marino, Gianluca Gini, (2018), A growing body

of research has analyzed the potential risks of problematic Facebook use

for mental health and well-being. Furthermore, there are several reasons

why the usage of Facebook meta should be controlled by students

Facebook meta collects a significant amount of personal data from its

users, including their browsing history, location, and personal information.

By controlling Facebook usage, students can ensure that their personal

information is not being collected or shared without their consent.

Social media can be a major distraction for students, especially when

they are trying to focus on their studies; hence, by controlling their usage,

students can limit the amount of time they spend on social media and avoid

the distractions that come with it.

Overall, by responsibly using Facebook meta, students can protect

their privacy, avoid distractions, prevent cyberbullying, and maintain their

academic integrity and mental health condition.

Synthesis

Facebook meta has become popular to the students because of its

various useful features.

According to Mark Zuckerg (2021), Facebook meta can help students

connect with others and form supportive communities, which can be

beneficial for mental health as it provides students with a platform to

connect with friends, family, and others.

However, Walsh (2022) has emphasized that a sizable increase in

the number of students who reported mental distress at some time in the

preceding year has something to do with the excessive usage of social

media application. As a support to Walsh claim, Wiley Online Library (2022)

stated that excessive social media users demonstrate a psychological

imbalance between the impulsive and reflective systems in their minds.

The findings indicated that social networking sites, such as Facebook,

can enable students to cross boundaries and create spaces of collaborative

learning. These can also give learners a platform to construct a public and

personal environment, where they can communicate, interact, and expand

their network.
