Reflection Paper by Nur Rahmi

THE AMMAN MESSAGE

Amman's treatise emerged as an answer to Islamophobia in the post-terrorism world. The treatise
was formed through a long process of negotiations between scholars in 2004-2006 on the idea of
King Abdullah II of Jordan. The results of the negotiations gave birth to the Three Points of the
Amman Treatise which has been signed by 552 scholars from various countries. This treatise
carries a concept of tolerance oriented towards harmony between Muslims to respect each other
in different schools so as to achieve Islamic unity, as well as being a bridge in a diversity of
madhhab.

The Amman treatise consists of 3 points, namely:

1. Anyone who follows one of the 4 Sunni madhhabs namely Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i
and Hanbali, and 2 Shia madhhabs namely Ja'fariyyah and Zaydiyyah Shia and
Ibadiyyah madhhabs and Dzahiid madhhabs is a Muslim.
2. Declaring followers of a particular madhhab or other Muslims as infidels, it is
forbidden.
Because of his blood, honor and property are protected in Islam.
In general, it is not permissible to disbelieve in any Muslim group that believes in
Allah SWT. And the Prophet PBUH. As his messenger and not disobeying all the
main principles of Islam.
3. No one can issue a fatwa without the condition of certain scientific qualifications
and without referring to the methodology of the Islamic school of law.

This Amman treatise in my opinion is a message of peace between Muslims so as not to cult
each other's madhhab style of thought as the best and then blame other madzhabs, nor provoke
wars between fellow Muslims who should unite and strengthen each other, one thing that must
be held that the differences that exist are mercy that facilitates our religious life as Muslims.

This Amman treatise also teaches us that before we strengthen the attitude of tolerance between
religions it would be better if we strengthen unity among Muslims first, how can we understand
other religions if we do not understand our own religion.
