1. INTRODUCTION

Landscape planning is the process of designing outdoor areas such as gardens, parks, and

public green spaces. It involves the coordination of natural and man-made elements and

activities to create a desirable and sustainable outdoor environment. The goal of

landscape planning is to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional space that meets

the needs of the people who use it. This includes considering the needs of the

environment, the wildlife, and the people who will access the space.

Jamburi Park, located in the east of Agrabad commercial area, is a major public open

space. This Park is an urban park which main function is to provide passive recreation.

The history of the park graphically demonstrates some of the conflicts inherent in

managing public spaces in dense urban centres. Over the years, some local influential

people had grabbed parts of the Public Works Department land for growing vegetables

while others constructed makeshift shops on another part. It was also a mosquito breeding

spot. But everything changed within a few years. At present it is an outstanding eye-

catching park with its beautiful appearance. Many city dwellers desire an escape from the

hustle and bustle of urban life, and Jamburi Park is one of the rare locations in

Chattogram that could potentially provide this sanctuary. Some of the characteristics that

make the park a haven for relaxation and escape, like its lush greenery and waterbody.

But The Park gives off an unvarying atmosphere to its visitors and there is a lack of

diversity in this park.

This report aims to highlight the current landscape, landscaping techniques, functional

strategies, and drawbacks of the park. Additionally, we proposed some planning

suggestions to make the park more attractive and appealing to people of all ages.

2. SITE INFORMATION

Jamboree Park is an urban park in the Agrabad area of Chittagong, Bangladesh. It is

previously known as Jamboree field as it has been used for large Scouts gatherings called

Jamboree, was inaugurated on Saturday in Chittagong city. At present from nearby high-

rise buildings the park looks like a man dancing raising two hands. The attractive design

and illumination of the park catch city dwellers’ eyes. The Park is on 8.55 acres of land.

At a time 500 people can use the park without felling being in a crowd. In the east there

are Anti-corruption Commission, Roads and Highway Department, Department of

Explosive; in north there is Agrabad Circle Land Office; in west there are Karnaphuli

Shishu Park and Ma-o-shishu hospital and Cancer Hospital; in the south there is

Bangladesh Standard & Testing Institute. The entry is free. There are four beautiful

structures at four corners of the park — two toilet blocks, one PWD office and one power

substation.

4
There are 50,000 square feet water-body, 8,000 feet walkway and compound road,

internal master drain. There is walkway also beside the 2.5 feet long boundary wall. It

also features three galleries at the corner of the water-body, two beautiful fountains and

500 lights in the park area. The Park has six entrances. People from not only the nearby

areas such as Agrabad, Bank Colony, CGS Colony, CDA residential area, TNT Colony,

Bohutola Colony but also from Bohoddarhat, Chawkbazar, Nasirabad are coming to visit

this park. On Friday the crowd grows bigger.

Nearly 10,000 saplings of 65 species have planted in the field of the park. There is a list

below about some existing plant in the park.

The Park consists of some major landscape element like:

 Paved walkways

 Plants

 Seating place

 Fountain

 Waterbody

Jamburi park is standing on a flat land but while constructing the park, the ground has

been made almost three feet high so that it does not get submerged due to water-logging.

Also, the middle portion of the park is slightly higher than the corner. It’s because the

water in the middle flows towards the border where the master drain placed.

3. GENESIS OF PROJECT

During the Pakistan National Squat Jamboree, East and West Pakistan scouts gathered in

the area. Subsequently, the area became known as Jamburi Field. In the past, the 16-acre

field was used during the day by children and teenagers to play, but in the afternoon and

evening, the area was inhabited by robbers. Over the years, the about 9-acre field had

become dilapidated and deserted but has now been transformed into a beautiful park.

Bushes, jungles, mosquitoes, snakes, and scorpions have been removed and a children's

park has been constructed on the remaining 6 acres of land. Overall, the newly developed

Jamburi Park provides a safe environment for children and adults alike. The genesis of

the project on landscape planning proposals for Jamburi Park began with a growing

concern for the lack of green spaces and recreational areas in the city. As the population

of Chittagong continues to grow, the need for accessible and well-maintained parks and

open spaces becomes increasingly important.

The project is expected to have a significant positive impact on the community, providing

a safe and enjoyable space for residents to relax and enjoy with ecology. In an effort to

address this issue, this report has given some proposals for the development of existing

landscape of Jamburi Park. For that, author have conducted extensive research on existing

condition and gathered input from the local community to develop a comprehensive plan

for the park's landscape development. The proposal includes a variety of enhancements

such as shedding on seating place, fence around the waterbody, zone for different age

group and provision of drinking water and dustbins. Additionally, the plan calls for the

planting of native trees and other vegetation to improve the park's overall aesthetic and

ecological health.

8
The recent development of Jamburi Park, an urban eco-park in Agrabad, Chattogram, has

been met with a great deal of interest. First established on January 1, 1949, the park is

known as the biggest field in Chittagong and was inaugurated by Ayub Khan, the GOC of

the East Pakistan Division of the Army, located opposite the Agrabad Mother and Child

Hospital.

4. PROBLEM STATEMENT

There are many landscape strategies that have been taken while making the park. They

are given below:

 Waterbody that has been introduced in the middle of the park, keeps the

surrounding cool.

 The fountains attract people and keep them amazed.

 Seating in Jamburi Park gives people a stopping point, whether it be for lunch, for

a rest, a place to wait and meet others or simply a place to sit and take in the

scenery.

 Tress for the ecological essence.

 The Park has decorated with near thousand lamps which offer a dazzling view at

night.

 Several numbers of entrances are constructed for easy accessibility.

 For drainage system, there are internal master drain.

9
In spite of such successful planning strategies, there are some drawbacks which needs to

be improved. They are given below:

 There is no fence around the pond so that a children can face an accident anytime.

 The Park looks so homogenous from all side which creates monotony.

 Lack of proper shedding in the seating place.

 Provision of drinking water is missing.

 Waterbody is not multifunctional.

 The Park looks artificial.

 Dustbins are not sufficient.

5. PROPOSALS

The proposal for Jamburi park is to transform the entire park to a more attractive and

functional park for the people of all ages. After analyzing the existing condition, some

proposals can be given for the development of entire park.

5.1 Masterplan

A master plan for an urban park is a comprehensive planning document that outlines the

process of creating and maintaining a park within an urban environment. It typically

includes an analysis of the existing park environment, a vision for the future of the park,

and a list of proposed elements and amenities. The master plan also outlines the steps

needed to implement the plan, including funding, design and construction, and ongoing

maintenance and programming. There are some masterplan proposals that can be

effective for the betterment of Jamburi park. They are:

1. Provision of greenery inside boundary wall and along with walkway to motivate

walking and jogging: The presence of greenery can improve air quality, breaks

monotony while walking, provide shade, and create a sense of natural beauty that can

make people more likely to use the park for physical activity. Additionally, walking

and jogging among trees and plants has been shown to have psychological and mental

health benefits.

11
Some trees can be suggested to plant along with the walkway. Evergreen plants are

suggested because they can serve the whole year. They provide consistent green foliage

throughout the year, whereas deciduous plants lose their leaves in the fall and winter. This

means that evergreen plants can provide visual interest and beauty in the park even during

the colder months when other plants may be dormant. The suggested plants are given

below:

Table 02: Some proposed plants in Jamburi park

Name Function Height (max) Type

Dwarf Alberta Spruce Ornamental tree 3m Evergreen

Nagesshor Ornamental flower 12 m Evergreen

Little Gem Magnolia Fragrant flowers 6m Evergreen

Bokul Fragrant flowers 8m Evergreen

Silver Trumpet Tree Ornamental flower 6m Evergreen

Togor Ornamental tree 4m Evergreen

Gulmohar Ornamental flower 13 m Deciduous

Pinwheel flower Ornamental flower 3m Deciduous

2. Theme tree for shedding and gathering: A theme tree is a tree that is chosen and

placed in a specific location within a park or garden to serve as a focal point or to

provide a specific function. It is often chosen based on its unique characteristics, such

as its size, shape, or blooming pattern, or because it has cultural or historical

significance. For Jamburi Park a canopy tree is suggested as a theme tree. Canopy

trees are known for their ability to provide shade and shelter for a large area. They

typically have a dense crown of leaves that can provide protection from the sun, wind,

and rain. They are mostly used for aesthetic appeal and to improve the overall

environment of the park. The tree's spreading crown can provide ample shade for

people to rest and relax under, making it an ideal spot for gathering and socializing.

Fig 04: Proposed theme tree for gathering and shedding.

13
3. Fence should be introduced around the waterbody to provide child safety:

Introducing a fence around the waterbody in Jamburi Park is a good idea for child

safety. It will prevent children from accidentally falling into the water, as well as

prevent them from accessing the water without adult supervision.

A natural fence around the waterbody would be an effective way to provide child

safety. A natural fence can be made using various types of plants and trees such as

hedges, bushes, or small trees that are planted closely together. These plants can

create a barrier that is both attractive and functional.

4. Dedicated zone for different age group: It is a great idea to have dedicated zones for

different age group to attract them. These zones can be designed to cater to the

specific needs and interests of these groups while still being accessible to all park

visitors. For example, the children's zone can be designed with playground

equipment, swings, and other interactive activities that will keep them entertained and

14
active. The adult zone can be designed with fitness equipment, walking paths, and

other physical activities that promote healthy living.

It is important to ensure that these zones are not separated from the rest of the park,

but rather integrated seamlessly into the overall design. This can be achieved by using

natural elements such as trees, bushes, and landscaping to create a cohesive look and

feel throughout the park. Additionally, signage can be used to indicate the different

zones and their specific features without creating a "separate zone" atmosphere.

Overall, the park should be designed to be inclusive and accessible to all visitors,

regardless of age or physical ability. By designing the zones in flexible way so that it

can be used by different age groups, for example, the playground equipment can be

used for adult for the recreational purpose.

15
5.2 Design development

Design development for a park is a process of creating and refining the design of a park to

meet the needs of the community. This involves understanding the needs of the

community, choosing appropriate materials and features, and making sure the design is

feasible. There is given some design development for Jamburi Park:

1. Natural shedding can be given in the seating spot: Natural shedding can be provided

in the seating spots by planting trees or other vegetation that will provide shade. This

will create a comfortable and natural environment for visitors to rest and enjoy the

park. This not only provides shade but also helps to improve air quality and

biodiversity in the park. Additionally, it can also be a great way to attract more

visitors to the park and make it more inviting place to spend time. Trees that have a

moderate to dense canopy which can provide ample shade for seating spots. For

16
example: Neem, Jacaranda, Rain Tree etc. maybe good option for this purpose. These

trees are also well adapted to the local climate and will be able to thrive.

2. Verities of fishes in the pond to attract the visitors: Adding a variety of colorful fish

to a pond in a park can be visually appealing and may attract visitors to the area. It

can also provide a fun and educational opportunity for people to observe different

types of fish in their natural habitat. The inclusion of fish in the pond can provide a

valuable addition to the park's ecosystem and enhance the visitor experience.

17
Fig 05: Introduction of fishes in the pond.

3. Provision of drinking water: Providing drinking water facilities for visitors is a wise

design development because it meets the basic needs of visitors and ensures their

comfort and safety. By providing clean and safe drinking water, visitors can stay

hydrated and maintain good health during their visit. Additionally, having water

available in the park can save visitors the time and inconvenience of having to leave

the park to find water. It also makes the park more appealing and attractive to visitors,

which can ultimately increase the number of visitors.

It is also important to note that providing drinking water facilities not only meet the

needs of visitors but also aligns with the park's sustainability goals as it reduces the

use of single-use plastic bottles, which can harm the environment of the park.

Fig 06: Providing drinking water facility.

4. Waste management system should be enriched by providing dustbins more

frequently to the intersecting points: Providing more dustbins at intersecting points is

18
an important aspect of waste management. By having dustbins more frequently,

visitors will have easy access to dispose of their waste properly and it will help keep

the park clean and tidy. Frequent dustbins in the intersecting points of the park, where

visitors gather and move around, will encourage them to dispose of their waste

properly. It will also help to prevent litter and littering, which can be unsightly and

harmful to the park's ecosystem. Additionally, having more dustbins at intersecting

points will make it easier for park staff to collect and dispose of waste, thus reducing

the risk of overflowing waste and attracting pests. Providing drinking water facilities

may help to reduce the number of plastic bottles being thrown away, as visitors would

have access to a source of drinking water and would not need to rely on disposable

bottles.

5.3 Implementation

Implementation refers to the process of actually building and installing the features and

facilities outlined in the masterplan and design development. This may include the

19
construction of new facilities, the renovation of existing ones, and the installation of

landscaping and other features.

 For the provision of greenery inside the boundary wall and along the walkway, a

landscaping plan will be created which will include the selection of appropriate plants

and trees that thrive well in the local climate (Shown previously). The walkway will

be designed to be wheelchair accessible and will be constructed using durable

materials. Regular maintenance of the greenery will be done to ensure its longevity.

 A theme as a Gulmohar tree (Delonix regia) will be planted in a corner location

within the park to provide shading and gathering space for visitors. The tree is

suitable for the local climate and its ability to provide shade. Regular maintenance

will be done to ensure its health and longevity. It can grow up to 13 meters. The tree

is known for its large, flame-red flowers that bloom in the summer, which can add a

splash of color to the park and attract visitors. Additionally, the tree's relatively small

to medium size, makes it easy to manage in an urban park setting, this will make it an

attractive addition to the park's landscape.

 A green fence using different types of plants can be an effective way to provide child

safety around a waterbody. The fence can be designed to be tall enough to prevent

children from accidentally falling into the water, while also adding aesthetic value to

the area. It's also important to consider the maintenance of the plants as well as the

effect of the fence on the surrounding ecosystem.

 To create dedicated zones for different age groups within a park, the following steps

can be taken:

20
 Conduct research to understand the specific needs of each age group. This can

include surveys, focus groups, and interviews with members of the

community.

 Based on the research, design and layout each zone to meet the specific needs

of the target age group. For example, the playground for children should have

age-appropriate equipment and be designed to promote safe play. The fitness

area for adults should have equipment that is suitable for a range of fitness

levels and abilities.

 Work with a landscape architect to plan the overall layout of the park,

including the placement of each zone. The zones should be clearly defined and

easily accessible.

 Consult with experts in child development, fitness, and aging to ensure that the

design and layout of each zone meets the needs of the target age group.

 Natural shading will be provided in the seating spot by selecting plants and trees that

provide shade. The seating area will be designed to be wheelchair accessible and

constructed using durable materials.

 A variety of fishes will be introduced in the pond to attract visitors. The pond will be

regularly maintained to ensure the health and longevity of the fish. To introduce a

variety of fish to a pond and attract visitors, the following steps can be taken:

 Research the types of fish that are suitable for the climate and conditions of

the pond. Consider factors such as water temperature, pH levels, and the

presence of predators.

21
 Select a variety of fish that will create a visually appealing and diverse

ecosystem. This can include both native species and exotic fish that are not

commonly found in the area.

 Regularly monitor the water quality, including pH levels, temperature, and

oxygen levels, and take steps to maintain optimal conditions for the fish.

 Keep the pond clean by removing debris and dead fish as necessary.

 Create a viewing area for visitors to observe the fish, such as a walkway or

observation deck.

 Drinking water will be provided in the park washroom through the installation of

water dispensers. To provide drinking water in the park washrooms, the following

steps can be taken:

 Select a suitable location for the drinking water stations. Ideally, they should

be easily accessible, visible, and near washrooms.

 Choose the appropriate type of drinking water station. There are several

options available, including water fountains, water coolers, and bottle filling

stations.

 Install signs or markers to indicate the location of the drinking water stations.

 Test the water for quality and safety. The water stations should be regularly

serviced and maintained to ensure that the water is safe to drink.

 Make sure the water stations are accessible for people with disabilities.

 A waste management system will be implemented by placing dustbins more

frequently at intersecting points. The dustbins will be regularly emptied and

22
maintained to ensure they are clean and in good working condition. Additionally,

signs will be placed throughout the park to encourage visitors to properly dispose of

their waste.

6. CONCLUSION

The proposed development plan for Jamburi Park aims to improve the overall experience

of visitors by providing a variety of amenities and features. It has the potential to provide

a valuable community resource that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. With

the implementation of the proposed development proposals, the park will become a

destination for leisure, relaxation, and enjoyment for all. It can attract more visitors to the

park and promote healthy outdoor activities. It is aimed at providing a safe and enjoyable

environment for visitors of all ages.

23
Future scope: The future scope for this project could include additional facilities such as

playgrounds, parking space, and picnic areas to further enhance the visitor experience.

Overall, the proposed development of Jamburi Park will provide a much-needed boost to

the local community and their socio-economic condition. The Park could also explore the

possibility of hosting events and community gatherings, such as concerts and festivals.
