Introduction to
Collins Dictionaries
Collins has been publishing dictionaries for over 200 years. The
founder, William Collins, was motivated by his dream of “creating
knowledge for all”, and published the first affordable Gem English
Dictionary in 1902 - which later became the bestselling little
dictionary in the world. Collins continued to pioneer dictionary
techniques throughout the 20th century, from the first bilingual
Gem dictionaries in the 1920s, to the first evidence-based English
learner dictionary in the 1980s. Collins continues to innovate English Dictionary
through the development and continued success of its online Gem Edition (17th edition)
platform, www.collinsdictionary.com, as well as by collaborating
with other leading dictionary brands, and working with technology 9780008141677 | 700 pages
