GREENRIM TRAINING

Operate a Roller

Operating techniques

1. MODULE OBJECTIVES

At the end of this training session, each learner will be able to:
OPERATE A ROLLER
NQF LEVEL : 2 SAQA UNIT STANDARD ID – 262704 NQF CREDITS : 5
LEARNER WORK BOOK

 Explain correct operating techniques

 Explain hazards specific to operating Rollers, and ways to
minimize them.
 Explain safe working procedures according to Caterpillar’s
operation and maintenance manual.

2. MODULE OUTLINE

 General safety

 High amplitude

 Low amplitude

 Quiz

3. GENERAL SAFETY
(a) When mounting or dismounting the machine always face the machine and
ensure you have a secure foot and hand hold on the provided steps and grab
irons. Use three-point contact with the machine.

(b) Adjust the seat to suit you comfortably to ensure easy reach of all the controls.

(c) Remember that loose lying materials or tools in the cab could be fatal. It will
interfere with the controls.

(d) Ensure that you do not have any sticky or damaged controls before starting
the machine, or leaving for a job site.

(e) Always ensure the park brake is applied and there is no danger, damage or
injury to persons around the machine before starting the machine. Current
model machines will not start if the park brake is not engaged.

(f) Before shutting down the machine ensure it is parked in a safe and level area.

(g) Always turn off the main disconnect- or isolator switch whenever the engine is
stopped and the machine is left unattended. This will ensure that all electrical
current flow is discontinued and can prevent an electrical fire.

4. VIBRATORY OPERATION

4.1. HIGH AMPLITUDE

LEARNER WORK BOOK

In order to increase the height of the drum movement, place the vibratory
system in high amplitude.

High amplitude is used in the following situations:

 The job site requires higher compacting force in order to meet the
required density.
 In order to compact material with a depth of 250 mm or more, use high
amplitude.

Note: Once you have achieved the desired density of the material, continued
operation at high amplitude can crush the aggregate.

Note: Every job site is different due to the various conditions of the soil.
Moisture content and the type of material vary from job to job site. In order to
determine the amplitude that is needed, establishing a test location at each job
site is recommended.

HOW TO ENGAGE HIGH AMPLITUDE.

1. In order to place the vibratory system in high amplitude, depress the top of
vibratory amplitude control (2) downward.

2. Move the propel lever to the FWD position or the REV position.

3. Start the vibratory system by depressing vibratory ON/OFF control (1). The
control is located on the top of the propel lever.

4. In order to stop the vibratory system, press the vibratory ON/OFF control
(1).

5. Return the propel control to the STOP position.

4.2. LOW AMPLITUDE

In order to decrease the height of the drum movement, place the vibratory
system in LOW amplitude.

Low amplitude is used in the following situations:

 When operating the machine in high amplitude and the drum separates
from the soil, use low amplitude in order to reach the desired soil
density.

 The thickness of the material is less than 250 mm (10.0 inch).

 Objects such as sewer systems or water systems may be damaged due

to high amplitude.

HOW TO ENGAGE LOW AMPLITUDE.

1. In order to place the vibratory system in low amplitude, depress the bottom
of vibratory amplitude control (2) downward.
