---------------- What is a Slab? ----------------
(Structural definition)
 A slab is a broad, flat plate, usually horizontal, with top
and bottom surfaces parallel or nearly parallel.
 In RC Construction, slabs are used to provide flat, useful
surfaces.
 The slab in buildings is the primary element that resists
the applied loads.
 May be edge supported, or directly supported by the
columns.

 Use l = S

 Values shown are valid for normal weight concrete

and Grade 60 reinforcement (Fy=420 Mpa)
 For Fy other than 420 Mpa, the values will be multiplied
by (0.4+fy/700)

fire protection in some cases

Where:
As = required area of bars per 1m strip
s Ab = Area of one bar

NSCP Provisions ----------------------------------
Code Requirements for Maximum spacing
of flexural reinforcement.
@ Portions Critical to bending
Smax = 2h

@ Portions where bending is not critical

Smax = 380 (280/fs) – 2.5 Cc

But not greater than,

Smax = 300 (280/fs)

20
----------- Design of One Way Slabs -----------
 The simplest approach in
analysing One-way Slabs 1m
is to assume that the slab 1m
is a rectangular beam
with a large width to lb 1m

depth ratio and that this 1m

beam can be divided
into 1-m strips. 1m

la

21
----------- Design of One Way Slabs -----------
 Then you can
take a single strip 1m

and analyse it as
a beam with a h
b=1m and a
