CULINARY NEWSLETTER

Dear culinary families - we are nearing the end of the semester & I want you all to
know how fun it’s been. We have learned a lot and created dishes like vegetable soup,
croutons, pico de gallo salsa, seasoned chips, and crudités. Your kids have become
masters of knife skills - I’m super impressed. As we near the next semester, I want you
to feel confident you know what’s going to happen next. Here is our culinary
newsletter for updates taking us into winter break.

UPCOMING RECIPES &

1. COOKIE VOLUNTEERS
Our last two recipes of the semester will be cookies! First, we will
bake chocolate chip cookies in class followed by a cookie contest
for all of our students. Please know that they will have a week in
between to plan, write, and collect for their cookie contest recipe.
We are currently looking for volunteers to help with both cookie
weeks in class. It’s a great opportunity to see how much our kids
can do (while helping them measure and gather ingredients.)

2. LOOKING AHEAD TO
TRIMESTER 2 As we wrap up our first trimester and reflect on our
time, students will also be creating a goal and looking
forward to the new semester.
Here is what you can expect for the first few weeks of
Tri 2: Class syllabus, new recipes, volunteer dates,
chance to purchase aprons & hats, and a donation
request for the semester.

ALL STAR BREAKFAST

3. SERVERS FRI 11/3 7-7:45AM
Friday, November 3rd (7-7:45am) - We are looking for
12-15 student volunteers to serve at the “All Star
Breakfast” on campus. You will earn hours (if needed)
as well as extra credit for your service hours.
Students are required to wear Santiago uniform and
will get an apron or jacket to wear during the event.

CULTURAL HERITAGE FOOD

DAY THURS 11/16/23
The inaugural cultural heritage food day will be Thursday,
November 16th and be held in each of our 8th grade
culinary classes. Students are asked to partake in a global
feast & bring in a dish important to their family cultural
heritage or favorite. They are asked to make the dish at
home with their families and bring it to class to share. They
will have the opportunity to heat it up in class during the
first 15 minutes. Families are encouraged to talk about why
the dish important to them and their family. Let’s
celebrate cultural diversity one bite at a time! Parents are

 OCC FIELD TRIP
5. FRIDAY 11/17/23
Our annual OCC field trip will be Friday, November 17th, 8am-
12pm. I am sending home a permission slip for this event and
all students are expected to participate. We will tour the
campus and culinary facilities for a day of food, fun &
education. Your student will learn how to go to college for
FREE and what partnership opportunities we have for them
after they leave Santiago.
Volunteers: We are nearly full for the trip but would like 3
more able bodied adults as volunteers to ride on the bus, tour,
and help supervise nearly 120 students. Please email me or use
the link below and if you’re interested - it’s an amazing day to
get a college tour with your kiddo!

6. TEACHER OF THE YEAR

CULINARY VOLUNTEERS
Thursday, December 7th (Time TBD) - We are looking for
6-8 student volunteers to serve at the “Teacher of the
Year” awards dinner on campus. You will earn hours (if
needed) as well as extra credit for your service hours.
Students are required to have their own transportation,
wear appropriate culinary attire (pants & closed toed
shoes) along with a culinary jacket (provided) to
highlight our program. Sign ups will be linked below and

7. SANTA SOCIAL COOKIE

DECORATOR VOLUNTEERS
We will offer students another chance to earn service hours and promote our
culinary program with the Santiago Santa Social - Saturday, December 9th from
9:30am-2:30pm. Students will participate by decorating cookies with families as
they enjoy the festivities. It’s a fun event and we have a blast every year!
Students are required to have their own transportation and wear appropriate
culinary attire (closed toed shoes & pants) along with a culinary jacket (provided).

 BOLETÍN CULINARIO
Queridas familias culinarias, nos estamos acercando al final del semestre y quiero que todos sepan lo
divertido que ha sido. Hemos aprendido mucho y hemos creado platos como sopa de verduras, picatostes,
salsa pico de gallo, papas fritas sazonadas y crudités. Sus hijos se han convertido en maestros de las
habilidades con el cuchillo, estoy muy impresionado. A medida que nos acercamos al próximo semestre,
quiero que se sientan seguros de que saben lo que va a suceder a continuación. Aquí está nuestro boletín
culinario para actualizaciones que nos llevan a las vacaciones de invierno.

1. PRÓXIMAS RECETAS Y
VOLUNTARIOS DE GALLETAS
Nuestras dos últimas recetas del semestre serán galletas! Primero,
hornearemos galletas con chispas de chocolate en clase, seguido
de un concurso de galletas para todos nuestros estudiantes. Tenga
en cuenta que tendrán una semana en el medio para planificar,
escribir y recolectar su receta de concurso de galletas.
Actualmente estamos buscando voluntarios para ayudar con las
dos semanas de galletas en clase. Es una gran oportunidad para
ver cuánto pueden hacer nuestros hijos (mientras los ayudamos a
medir y recolectar ingredientes). Por favor, envíeme un correo

2. DE CARA AL
TRIMESTRE 2 A medida que terminamos nuestro primer trimestre y

buscando de 12 a 15 estudiantesvoluntarios para

horas (sies necesario), así como crédito adicional por
sus horas de servicio. Se requiereque los estudiantes
usen el uniforme de Santiago y obtendrán un delantal
o chaqueta para usar durante el evento. Las

DÍA DE LA ALIMENTACIÓN DEL
PATRIMONIO CULTURAL JUEVES
16/11/23
El día inaugural de la comida del patrimonio cultural será el
jueves 16 de noviembre y se llevará a cabo en cada una de
nuestras clases culinarias de 8º grado. Se les pide a los
estudiantes que participen en un banquete global y traigan
un plato importante para su herencia cultural familiar o
favorito. Se les pide que preparen el plato en casa con sus
familias y lo lleven a clase para compartirlo. Tendrán la
oportunidad de calentarlo en clase durante los primeros 15
minutos. Se anima a las familias a hablar sobre por qué el
plato es importante para ellos y su familia. ¡Celebremos la
diversidad cultural bocado a bocado! Los padres son Patrimonio cultural
bienvenidos a nuestro salón de clases este día para

 EXCURSIÓN DE
5. OCC VIERNES
11/17/23
Nuestra excursión anual de OCC será el viernes 17 de noviembre,
de 8 a.m. a 12 p.m. Estoy enviando a casa una hoja de permiso
para este evento y se espera que todos los estudiantes
participen. Recorreremos el campus y las instalaciones culinarias
para un día de comida, diversión y educación. Su estudiante
aprenderá cómo ir a la universidad GRATIS y qué oportunidades
de asociación tenemos para ellos después de que salgan de
Santiago.
Voluntarios: Estamos casi llenos para el viaje, pero nos gustaría
que 3 adultos más sanos como voluntarios viajaran en el
autobús, recorrieran y ayudaran a supervisar a casi 120
estudiantes. Por favor, envíeme un correo electrónico o use el
enlace a continuación y, si está interesado, ¡es un día increíble
para hacer un recorrido universitario con su hijo!

de premios "Maestro del año" en el campus. Ganará horas (si es
necesario), así como crédito adicional por sus horas de servicio.
Se requiere que los estudiantes tengan su propio transporte,
usen ropa culinaria apropiada (pantalones y zapatos cerrados)
junto con una chaqueta culinaria (provista) para resaltar
nuestro programa. Las inscripciones se vincularán a continuación
y se publicarán en Google Classroom.

VOLUNTARIOS DE PAPÁ
7. NOEL SOCIAL COOKIE
DECORATOR
Ofreceremos a los estudiantes otra oportunidad de ganar horas de servicio y
promover nuestro programa culinario con el Santiago Santa Social - Sábado 9 de
diciembre de 9:30 a.m. a 2:30 p.m. Los estudiantes participarán decorando galletas
con las familias mientras disfrutan de las festividades. ¡Es un evento divertido y nos
divertimos mucho todos los años! Se requiere que los estudiantes tengan su propio
transporte y usen un atuendo culinario apropiado (zapatos y pantalones cerrados)
junto con una chaqueta culinaria (provista). Las inscripciones se vincularán a
