aim(s)
applications
covered

Scenario You have just started work as an engineering trainee at a large engineering
company and are completing a placement in the workshop.
Your Supervisor has asked you to review some engineering drawings and to
make some justified decisions about the different measuring and marking-out
methods and equipment to be used for three different applications. They also
want you to provide information as to why the measuring and marking out
equipment for each of the applications must be calibrated and taken care of.
They want you to do this so they can make sure they are using the most
suitable and efficient equipment and methods.

Task 1 You are going to evaluate the effectiveness of using different measuring and
marking-out methods and equipment for different applications and the impact
of not taking care of and calibrating the equipment.

To do this:
Your tutor will provide you with engineering drawings of three different
applications that need to be marked out. One will be square or rectangular (for
example sheet material), one will be circular or cylindrical (for example, bar)
and one will be an irregular shape (for example, a casting).

You need to:

Research the different methods, tooling, measuring equipment, work holding
devices and marking out mediums that will be required to mark out the three
different applications.

You then need to:

Produce a report that evaluates the effectiveness of using different measuring
and marking-out methods and equipment for the three different applications
and the impact of not taking care of and calibrating equipment. Your report
must include evaluative information about:

 how a datum face and reference point is important for each of the
applications
 the specific methods, tooling, measuring equipment, work holding
device/s and marking out medium/s to be used for each of the
applications
 the potential disadvantages and impact if the measuring and marking
out equipment for each of the applications is not calibrated and taken

care of - as part of this you must cover what calibration is and how to
take care of each piece of measuring and marking out equipment.
Evidence you A report covering different measuring and marking-out methods and equipment
must produce for three different applications and the impact of not taking care of and
for this task calibrating equipment.
