Introduction
This Assessment tool is to enable a Junior Electrician to advance to the position of Senior Electrician.

Evidence of Skills and Knowledge


Before a task or skill is signed off by the nominated person, the participant must have demonstrated
that they can complete the listed task correctly, independently, and safely in all respects, conforming
to the industry or company standards and procedures and that the tasks are applicable to the work
undertaken by the company’s employees.

The participant must have demonstrated the ability to complete those tasks in a timely manner to an
appropriate and acceptable level of quality.

It is anticipated that a competent person in the company will supervise these assessments,
demonstrate the on-the-job skills to the participant where necessary, and collect evidence to
validate the participant’s skills and knowledge. A sign-off sheet is provided below to formalize the
assessment.

A suitably qualified Certificate IV trainer/assessor nominated by Lithgow Railway Workshop will


validate the sign-off and initiate the issue of the competence certificate. Validation may include
further interviews or assessments with the Learner.

Competency Checklist
The participant demonstrates the ability to complete the listed tasks. Assessor to initial the
‘Competent’ column.

NOTE: If the assessor is aware that the participant has existing skills and prior knowledge to a
satisfactory level, no further assessment is required and the ‘Competent’ column can be signed off
without further assessment for that element.

Ability to download and analyses the data for various types of locomotive
control systems, speedo, and event data systems.
Locomotive safety air brake tests
Troubleshoot and rectify faults in electrical/electronic types of VCD system
Fault find and rectify the internal and external lighting system of the locomotive
Fault finding and rectifying of computer-based excitation and propulsion
control system (QES)
Fault finding and rectifying of 3 field excitation control system
Fault finding and rectifying of battery, auxiliary power generation, and various
types of power supplies
Fault finding and rectification of various electrical machines (motors and
generators)
Fault finding and rectification of all electrical or pneumatic relay, contactors and
magnet valves.
Replace Hasler speedo taps
Fault finding and rectification of electrical/electronics home appliances (i.e
fridge or washing machine etc,)
Fault finding and rectification of electrical plant equipment’s (i.e. Grinder
machine, heaters lath machine etc.)
Fault finding and rectification about workshop electrical supplies and
applications
Fault finding and rectification of Radio system (only unit replacement)
Ability to do the modification and install new system / feature in the locomotive
as per customer demand.
