Quality Standard 3: Teachers plan and deliver effective instruction and create an environment

that facilitates learning for their students.

● Element D: Teachers establish and communicate high expectations and use processes to
support the development of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Reflection:

This lesson required students to use addition facts to solve the given subtraction fact through
visual questions and word problems. Once I conducted the lesson, the pages above were the
problems that each student filled out individually. The top left image is before the solve & share
was taught, whereas the top right image is after that concept was taught, so comprehension can
be seen as the correct answer was eventually written. The following images were completed after
the guided practice was taught and students illustrated their new knowledge through drawings
and correct answers. After these pages were completed, they were given an assignment that took
a deeper dive into the topic, which can be seen in the bottom right image.

This lesson was the students’ first real exposure to subtraction, so I was impressed by the results
that were shown through their work. While each student was working on their assigned pages, I
stopped by each table to assist with questions and misunderstandings. This helped to ensure that
students weren’t falling behind, so I would like to take this practice into my next teaching
experiences. This artifact is aligned to this standard as students were given explicit instruction on
what was expected of them to facilitate their higher thinking and problem solving.
