YEAR 9 HUMANITIES

TERM 3 ASSIGNMENT

FOOD SECURITY

DUE DATE: Friday, September 1

Instructions:

1. Read these three news articles which outline three separate food insecurity situations:
 Food insecurity report highlights plight of children in Kimberley and Pilbara (3 Jul 2023, ABC)
 UN warns Yemen’s food insecurity remains serious threat (27 May 2023, Daily News Egypt)
 Somalis are dying because of a climate crisis they didn’t cause (22 Mar 2023, The Guardian)

2. Select TWO of the articles and conduct further research into these two situations to understand the
causes and impacts.

3. Create a 1-2 page report in your own words that compares and contrasts the causes and impacts of food
insecurity for these two populations.

Your report should include:

 Subheadings
 Annotated maps of the two regions (identify where the problem is and quantify the size of the problem)
 At least 2 causes for each situation (what factors have led to this food security problem? Consider access,
availability, stability, and knowledge and resources)
 At least 2 impacts for each situation (who has experienced food insecurity, what have the consequences
been? Consider access, availability, stability, and knowledge and resources)
 A complete and accurate bibliography.

Remember, your report should compare and contrast the two situations. How are they the same? How are they
different?

Optional: consider possible solutions for your chosen situation and why you think it could work. What would need
to happen for the situation to improve, and who is responsible for fixing the problem?

Suggested sub-headings for your report are:

Background
Causes
Impacts
Solutions (optional)
Bibliography
Research

Here are some places to begin your research:

World Food Program

World Bank
Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO)
Hungry for Change report (WA)
Foodbank Australia
Australian Institute of Family Studies

Plus, look for news articles on news sites such as ABC News and The Guardian.

Submission:

You will submit your report electronically via Compass.
