Single Data and Grouped Data

In the realm of mathematics, the study of data is fundamental to understanding patterns,

making predictions, and drawing meaningful conclusions. Data, in its essence, represents a
collection of information that can be analyzed to gain insights into various phenomena. There
are two primary forms of data that mathematicians and statisticians work with: single data
and grouped data.

Single Data:

Single data refers to individual, distinct observations or values that are not categorized or
grouped. Each data point stands alone and represents a unique piece of information.
Analyzing single data points allows us to explore the characteristics of individual elements
within a dataset. This form of data is essential for understanding specific values, such as
individual test scores, ages, or measurements.

Grouped Data:

Grouped data, on the other hand, involves organizing individual data points into categories
or intervals. This method of data presentation is particularly useful when dealing with large
sets of information. Grouping data helps in simplifying complex datasets by categorizing
similar values together. These categories or intervals provide a broader view of the data,
making it easier to identify trends, frequencies, and distributions within the dataset.
Grouped data is commonly used in various fields such as economics, biology, and social
sciences, where large-scale data analysis is necessary.

In this module, we will explore methods that can be used to analyze and present data.

Working Steps:
1. Collect data on student’s height and shoe size from other classes.
2. Create a table to summarize the data you have obtained. Consider creating either a single
data table or a grouped data table suitable for each data category.
3. If you choose to use a grouped data table, then the appropriate steps to determine the
number of classes and class width should be considered.
4. Determine the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation for students' height and
shoe size data.
5. Present your data using appropriate charts.
6. Choose another group to exchange data with. Compare the mean, median, mode, and
standard deviation obtained. (Write down the calculation results of the other group you
selected)
7. Draw conclusions from the comparison of the mean, median, mode, and standard
deviation.
