Stonex Pocket Mobile: a brief tutorial

1. Start "Stonex Mobile Pocket" which was installed in the Windows Start
menu of controller (S4H, S7 series)

 With Pocket Mobile you can create a


output NMEA string;
 Overview of the used satellites;
 VRS Real-Time corrections via Ntrip
services;
 Connection to 3rd party software;

2. Pocket Mobile automatically detects the Stonex receiver

 Automatic detection of the receiver;


 The system automatically starts
searching for satellites;
 Please remember that "indoor" no
reception is possible
3. Understanding the status bar

Main menu icon

SkyPlot icon: green means satellites collected, red means satellites not collected.

GPS connection icon, it can be connected or disconnected tot he GPS internal board.

Battery icon, it have different levels depending on power level.

RTK icon: red is AUTONOMOUS, yellow is DGPS, blue is FLOAT and green is FIXED.

Sat is the number of collectes satellites, PDOP is a Position-Dilution-Of-Precision value, and Prec. is
the estimated error.
4. Overview and setting options

• By clicking the main menu icon and


then „GPS Setting“ you can check and
set the GPS port and parameter.
• The main bar is always showed and
inform you about instrument status.

5. GPS Settings

• Select the correct GPS model, serial


port and baud-rate, then push
„Connect“ button.
• By clicking „Show parameters“ you
can also set the limit for the satellite
collections and use: minimum
elevation mask, max DOP values and
minimum Signal-To-Noise ratio.
6. Sky Plot

• By clicking the main menu icon and


then „Sky Plot“ you can see which is
the satellite configuration in the sky.
• Please consider that not all
constellations are collected by all
model, GLONASS are collected only by
S7-D and S7-G.

7. Info Sat

• By clicking the main menu icon and


then „Info Sat“ you can see the
detailed information for each satellite,
the data regars elevation, azimuth
and Signal-To-Noise ratio for each
frequency.
8. Details

• By clicking the main menu icon and


then „Details“ you can see the
detailed information about the
position status, including geographic
and local coordinates, estimated
errors, DOP values and UTC time.

9. RTK Rover
• By clicking the main menu icon and
then „RTK rover“ you can enter into
the configuration page for establishing
a GPRS connection with internal
modem.
• ROVER Settings: you can select
between NTRIP for using the internal
GSM/GPRS modem and Serial Port for
getting correction from an external
device connect to the serial port (work
only with S4 series)
• Base setting:
9.1 NTRIP

• GSM settings is the page for setting


the APN parameters of SIM phone
company.
• NTRIP Settings is the page for inserting
the access password for NTRIP server
connection.

• Inside GSM settings you can create a


new or select an existing ISP
connection, that you have to use for
the internet connection. Click on „Set“
for create a new connection. Click
„Back“ for coming back to previous
page.
This ist the page for setting a new ISP
connection:
• Choose a name for a new connection.
• Insert the APN (Access Point Name): it
depends on your SIM phone
company, „User name“ and
„Password“ usually are empty but in
some company you have also to insert
them.
• Once fill in the information click on
„Create“.

• Now you can see the GSM/GPRS


signal status, it is recommended to
have at least two marks in the signal
strenght icon for a stable connection.
• Then enter into NTRIP settings.
• NTRIP Settings: insert the parameters for
connecting to the NTRIP server: a name
for your network, IP address, Port, select
„Ntrip“ as Server, User name and
Password. The Mount Point will be
downloaded later so don’t specify it,
in Type of Base you can select „VRS“ or
„Single Base“, the second only for that
network where you can manually choose
the single base. Leave empty also „Diff.
Mode“, then click „Back“ and then
„Connect“ when come back in previous
page.
• If network connection is successful
you can see the bases or mount-point
that are sectable. Choose one and
click „Connect“.
• Once network connection is
established you can see that the
corrections are receiving, moreover
you can see the base coordinates and
latency (age).

9.2 Serial Port

• In this page it is possible to set an


external device , like an external Bt
device for example, for receiving
NTRIP correction. The only setting to
be done are the COM port number
and baud-rate.
10. NMEA Output

• In this page you can enable the output of


NMEA string from GPS/GNSS board of
instrument (S7 or S4).
• At the top of the page you can choose
which strings are sent out (GGA, GST, etc.)
and which is the required sample rate.
• Then you have to select which virtual serial
ports are used and the baud-rate. Click on
„Virtual Ports“ and enter into specific
page.

• Here you have to select the two serial


virtual port used fort he NMEA output.
One is internal, from GPS board to Pocket
Mobile, while another is „external“, that
means it will be used for a third-party
software for receiving NMEA.
• Please consider that every device could
have different COM port busy or available,
for example in S7 we suggest COM 7 and
COM 8, in S4 other ports.
• Once selected activate „Enable virtual port
at start-up and click „Confirm“.
• Once coming back in previous page, you
can start the output by clicking „Start
NMEA“. Then you can check if messages
are received by clicking „Show NMEA“.
10.1. How to use ArcPad

• Once that NMEA started, it is possible run


the popular software „ArcPad“, by
selecting the correct COM port number
and baud-rate.
11.Language

• In this page it is possible to select the


language. Actually only English and Italian
are available.

12.Pocket Mobile Full

• In this page it will be possible to enable


the advanced functionalities, for example
it will be possible to configure the
handheld as a base transmitting through
an external device. Actually new functions
are not yet available.
