The SIM registration law in the Philippines was implemented to help track and identify SIM card owners in order to curb mobile phone scams. The original deadline was extended to July 25 to allow more people to register their SIM cards. While the Department of Information and Communication Technology expected around 95 million of 100 million SIM cards to be registered, recent police operations revealed individuals selling thousands of registered SIM cards for fraudulent purposes. To fully protect citizens, nationwide education on legal rules and scam prevention is needed from the government, as the SIM registration law alone is not enough to remove mobile scammers.

I chose this topic because there are many people that has been scammed by using an unregistered number that is why they implemented this law. The original deadline of the sim registration was April 26, but due to many people that are not registered yet the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) extended it until July 25 or 90 days from the original date of deadline. According to Secretary Ivan Uy of the DICT, they expected that around 95 million of the 100 million sim card owners will have done the sim registration. There are many issues of scamming nowadays that is why they implemented this law to track and identify the owner of the number. And according to the report of the Anti- Cybercrime Group (ACG) of the Philippines National Police last week showed that the three individuals arrested in San Jose Del Monte Bulacan had a total of 7,038 registered SIM Cards from different telecommunications companies. As you can see nowadays, the GCash was always trending due to many problems that people facing right now, some of the people money in their GCash Account has been wiped out. They try to see the transaction on their account, and they saw a lot of transaction that they did not even do. They post it online to see if they are the only that experiencing it, but no. A lot of people had the same experience. The police operation, according to ACG spokesperson Capt. Michelle Sabino, was the result of information on the suspects' activities that they had been receiving since August of last year, possibly in preparation for the passing of Republic Act No. 11934, or the SIM Registration Act. The accused then sold the SIM cards to trick people who intend to use them to commit fraud. "They purchase registered SIM cards for P400 as well as those that have been confirmed by virtual wallets like GCash. This instance shows that removing mobile phone scammers will require more than just the SIM registration law, and the national ID system for that matter. To protect everyone against cybercriminals, a nationwide information push on the relevant legal rules and an education drive on how to prevent being a victim are required. To do these, the national and local governments must exceed more effort so that the sim registration will be successful. For the people who don’t have a smartphone to register their, the governments must provide some help for them. The SIM registration law offers enough protection to help law enforcement locate scammers. But people must also help the government by protecting themselves from scammer and by not believing in suspicious text messages.
