VICE CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE TO GRADUANDS

Prof. John Ssebuwufu
BSc, PhD, EdD (hc), DPhil (hc), LLD(hc)

Dear Graduands,

On the occasion of the 5th graduation of the University of

Kisubi, I wish to convey my hearty congratulations to all
graduands on their well-deserved awards they are receiving
today. No doubt it has been a long and arduous journey
for you to get here – a journey that started from your pre-
school years through primary school, secondary school and
finally university where you have spent two or three years of
serious, rigorous and exhausting academic work.

As we all know, the year 2020 was a particularly tough year

not only for us but the entire world, as what initially started
as a simple viral outbreak in a little known city of Wuhan

07 Theme: “Harnessing Technology for Virtual Learning and Beyond”

In Virtue We Educate
in distant China, transformed itself into the worldwide
COVID-19 pandemic that spread like a wild fire across
all continents. This killer disease of the 21st century has
pervaded every little and most remote village in practically
every corner of the world. Even Uganda was not spared. In
a bid to contain the spread of the disease, the Government
was consequently forced to adopt drastic control measures,
which saw all educational institutions in the country forced
to prematurely close in mid March 2020. For you, before
this catastrophe befell us, you had six weeks left before
completing your final semester. We thank the Government
for somewhat easing the lockdown and allowing you to come
back in mid October 2020 to complete the learning and take
the final semester examinations.

Under normal circumstances, this graduation should have

been held in October 2020 with the usual fan fare and
paraphernalia; including the presence of your parents,
guardians and friends. We are sorry that this time this has
not been possible because, as we know, the pandemic is
very much with us, thus forcing us to continue observing the
Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set by the Ministry of
Health. This time you are here alone. The ‘new normal’ as
some refer to it, has imposed this restriction on us in order
to maximize the social distancing as required by the SOP. If,
after here, you are to celebrate the occasion with your loved
ones, please do so responsibly. COVID is real and it kills. Stay
safe and stay alive.

In equal measure, I salute you for your determination,

perseverance and hard work, without ever considering

In Virtue We Educate

giving up because of the disruptions the COVID-19 pandemic

caused to your studies. You have done us, and your parents
proud. Today you are leaving the University of Kisubi as
graduates. It is indeed an achievement you ought to celebrate
because it is still an important milestone, which many yarn
for but few achieve! I wish to congratulate all graduands
graduating with first class honours degrees on achieving this
rather rare honour.

As you prepare to join the world of work and the cut-throat

competition, professionalism, innovativeness and integrity
should be your guide. At UniK we have tried to instill in
you the virtues of what it takes to be a professional and
an innovator and a person of integrity. I urge those of you
who are graduating with bachelor’s degrees to come back
for the master’s degrees. To those of you graduating with
master’s degrees, crown them with a PhD or its professional
equivalent if you can.

To our teaching, administrative and support staff who

prepared you for this day, I say thank you for the time you
have devoted to these young men and women, amid the
formidable challenges and hardships the COVID pandemic
imposed on you. Your hard work has rendered them worthy
the awards they are receiving today.

John Ssebuwufu PhD,

Vice Chancellor.

THINE IS THE GLORY, RISEN, CONQU’RING SON;

Thine is the glory, risen, conqu’ring Son;

Endless is the victory, Thou o’er death hast won;
Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
Kept the folded grave clothes where Thy body lay.

Refrain
Thine is the glory, risen conqu’ring Son,
Endless is the vict’ry, Thou o’er death hast won.
Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;
Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom;
Let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing;
For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting.

Refrain
No more we doubt Thee, glorious Prince of life;
Life is naught without Thee; aid us in our strife;
Make us more than conqu’rors, through Thy deathless love:
Bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above.

IN CHRIST ALONE

1. In Christ alone my hope is found

He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

2. In Christ alone, who took on flesh

Fullness of God in helpless Babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save?
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

3. There in the ground His body lay

Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin? s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4. No guilt in life, no fear in death

This is the power of Christ in me
From a life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Could ever pluck me from His hand?
Til He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I stand

WE’RE MARCHING TO ZION

1. Come, we that love the Lord,

And let our joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne.

Refrain:
We’re marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion;
We’re marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.

2. The sorrows of the mind

Be banished from the place;
Religion never was designed
To make our pleasures less.

3. Let those refuse to sing,

Who never knew our God;
But children of the heav’nly King
May speak their joys abroad.

Glory begun below;
Celestial fruits on earthly ground
From faith and hope may grow.

To fairer worlds on high.

ENTRANCE

PRAISE TO THE LORD THE ALMIGHTY

1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,

the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy
health and salvation!
All ye who hear,
Now to His temple draw near;
Sing now in glad adoration!

2. Praise to the Lord, who o’er all

things so wondrously reigneth,
Who, as on wings of an eagle,
uplifteth, sustaineth.
Hast thou not seen
How thy desires all have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

27 Theme: “Harnessing Technology for Virtual Learning and Beyond”

In Virtue We Educate

3. Praise to the Lord, who hath fearfully,

wondrously, made thee!
Health hath vouchsafed and, when
heedlessly falling, hath stayed thee.
What need or grief
Ever hath failed of relief?
Wings of His mercy did shade thee.

4. Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper

thy work and defend thee,
Who from the heavens the streams of
His mercy doth send thee.
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
Who with His love doth befriend thee.

5. Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that

is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come
now with praises before Him!
Let the Amen
Sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

FIRST READING: WISDOM 6:12-25

Wisdom is bright, and does not grow dim. By those who love
her she is readily seen, and found by those who look for her.
Quick to anticipate those who desire her, she makes herself
known to them. Watch for her early and you will have no
trouble; you will find her sitting at your gates. Even to think
about her is understanding fully grown; be on the alert for her
and anxiety will quickly leave you. She herself walks about
looking for those who are worthy of her and graciously shows
herself to them as they go, in every thought of theirs coming
to meet them. Of her the most sure beginning is the desire
for discipline, care for discipline means loving her, loving
her means keeping her laws, obeying her laws guarantees
incorruptibility, incorruptibility brings near to God; thus
desire for Wisdom leads to sovereignty. If then, despots of
nations, you delight in throne and sceptre, honour Wisdom,
thus to reign for ever. What Wisdom is and how she came to
be, I will now declare, I will hide none of the secrets from you; I
will trace her right from the beginning and set out knowledge
of her, plainly, not swerving from the truth. Neither will I
take blighting Envy as my travelling companion, for she has
nothing in common with Wisdom. In the greatest number of
wise men lies the world’s salvation, in a sagacious king the
stability of a people. Learn, therefore, from my words; the
gain will be yours.

This is the word of the Lord.

SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:3-9

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send you
grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the grac-
es you have received through Jesus Christ. I thank him that
you have been enriched in so many ways, especially in your
teachers and preachers; the witness to Christ has indeed
been strong among you so that you will not be without any
of the gifts of the Spirit while you are waiting for our Lord
Jesus Christ to be revealed; and he will keep you steady
and without blame until the last day, the day of our Lord
Jesus Christ, because God by calling you has joined you to
his Son, Jesus Christ; and God is faithful.

This is the word of the Lord.

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 13:51-58

‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes’. And he said
to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of
the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out
from his storeroom things both new and old’. When Jesus
had finished these parables he left the district; and, coming
to his home town, he taught the people in their synagogue in
such a way that they were astonished and said, ‘Where did
the man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? This
is the carpenter’s son, surely? Is not his mother the woman
called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon
and Jude? His sisters, too, are they not all here with us? So
where did the man get it all?’ And they would not accept
him. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in
his own country and in his own house’, and he did not work
many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Now we have the light,
Yes, with faith we search in brightness,
Faith in Jesus Christ.

as we strive for peace.
Mind then and heart, we belong to the Lord,
Truth shall make us free.

His Rise from the dead,
God shall reign in all.

THE LATE ARCHBISHOP OF KAMPALA ARCHDIOCESE,
CYPRIAN KIZITO LWANGA

The University of Kisubi is a corporate citizen of Kampala Archdiocese, joins the

General public in mourning this great loss. The University had a personal
relationship with the Arch bishop, and one cannot afford to write the history of the
University without mentioning his name. We were expecting him to lead mass on
this 5th Graduation, but alas!!

The University remembers the Archb.ishop’s contribution in the negotiation for

land acquisition, and we are now seated on 10 acres of land, which gives us great
space for further expansion. The Archbishop was very supportive of all
development projects in the University, and we cannot take that contribution for
granted. The last contribution was the introduction of the diploma in catechism
and evangelism programme, which he requested to be conducted at the University.

The program of study commenced in December, and the graduates will surely
improve the eficiency of their respective parishes.

MAY HIS SOUL REST IN ENTERNAL PEACE

AMEN
