gland nut and outside screw and yoke (OS&Y), rising stem,
bolted gland flange, bolted/union/welded or threaded and seal-
welded bonnet. Also class 1500 valve with outside screw and
yoke (OS&Y), rising stem and bolted packing flange; bolted /
welded or threaded and seal welded bonnet.
4. The seat ring bore (port opening) is smaller than the body end (around
70%) opening making all the valves covered by this code as reduced
port design.
TRAINING MANUAL- PIPING DOC No. : 29040-PI-US-1006
Rev. : R0
5. The body-bonnet joint available under this design are bolted, union,
welded or threaded and seal welded.
6. Cast Iron or non-ferrous materials are not permitted for hand wheel.
3. The ratings are tabulated in Table 2 of the code for standard and
special class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, 2500 and 4500. Class
800 is not a normally tabulated ASME B16.34 designation, but it is an
intermediate class that is widely used for socket welding and threaded

Rev. : R0
5. End to end dimensions of class 800 and class 1500 socket welding end
and threaded end valves shall be as per manufacturers’ standard.
6. ASME B16.34 permits the design of socket welding and threaded end
valves to classes 150 to 4500 with the limitation as specified (i.e. as
limited class) but the minimum rating normally available in this type is
class 600.
7. The inside diameter and the nominal sizes match in ratings upto class
600 and is marginally lower for class 1500 (around 90%) making all
valves covered by this code as full port design.
9. Body and bonnet thickness of class 800 valves are less than that of BS
5352 and API 602 but for class 1500 valves it is less than API 602 but
more than BS 5352.
1.1.3 BS 5352
c. Valves with Outside Screw and Yoke (O,S&Y) rising stem bolted

2. The pressure temperature ratings for class 800 valves are given in
Table 1. These values for bellow sealed valves are given in
Table 2. The values are lower than the ratings assigned by API 602.
For pressure temperature ratings of class 1500 valves BS 1560 part 2
shall be referred.
4. There are two designs for seat ring bore specified, standard bore which
is full bore and reduced bore which is comparable to that of API 602.
6. Body and bonnet thickness of class 800 reduced bore valves are same
as that of API 602 where as it is higher than that of API 602 for class
1500 valves.
Regulatory Codes
2. API 600 covers flanged or butt welding ends, bolted bonnet, O S & Y
rising stem, non rising hand wheel, single or double gate valves in sizes
1"(25) NB to 24" (600) NB and in nominal pressure designations of
class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500.
Rev. : R0
7. Valves are supplied with direct operated hand wheel that opens the
valve when turned in a counter-clock wise direction. Other
requirements such as gear, chain wheel, actuator etc. to be specified.
8. Trim includes stem, the gate seat surface, the body seat surfaces (or
seat ring) and back seat bush. Basic trim materials are specified in
Table 13.
9. The minimum wall thickness of body and bonnet are more than that of
ASME B16.34 (except in few sizes of class 2500) and are identical to
that of BS 1414. The comparison is tabulated below. It is a very
important point to note that the wall thickness as per ASME B 16.34
is lower.

10. The inside diameter of the body seat (port diameter) is the same as
that of nominal size in most of the cases making the valves as per this
standard as a full port valve. In class 900 and above the port diameter
is smaller and these values are tabulated in Table 4 of the code.
11. The code does not restrict the valve orientation. It is specified that "the
gate shall be designated so that all parts can function properly
independent of the installed valve orientation" (clause 5.6.3)
a. Class 150, 300, 600 and 1500 flanged end or butt-welding ends
O S & Y with rising stem, bolted gland flange and a bolted, welded
or threaded-and-seal-welded bonnet. Class 900 is not addressed.
3. Code accepts valves with welded-on flanges with full penetration groove
butt welding, post weld heat treated as required. Socket welding of the
flanges to the body is not permitted.
5. Bolted body bonnet joint shall be designed to confine the gasket and
prevent over compression.
6. The code covers only the solid wedge design of the gate.
Rev. : R0
API 600 / BS 1414. The valves are identical to that of the reduced port
gate valves as per BS 5352.

wedge. Hardening is done by overlaying.
5. The code specifies the finish on the stem, in contact with packing ,
as Ra of 32 micro inch.
8. All valves covered in this code are full bore valves and inside
diameter is the same as that in Annex-A of ASME B16.34.
2. The working pressures for standard and special class are tabulated in
Table 2. Ratings intermediate o tabulated valves are determined by
linear interpolation. The working pressures for the special classes are
higher than that of the standard class. The additional inspection
requirements for the special class are specified in section 8.
Rev. : R0
5. Limited class valves are available only in welding end and in sizes 2 1/2"
NB and smaller. Requirements of limited class valves are covered in
Annexure-G.
6. The code allows the use of carbon steel (A 307 Gr.B) for bonnet bolting
only for Class 300 and lower, provided service temperature is limited to
400°F.
7. The code recognises the valves fabricated by welding partly or fully and
requirements are laid down in clause 2.1.5.
1.2.4 BS 1414
1. BS 1414 is generally in accordance with API 600 and the valves as per
this standard are interchangeable with those of similar type specified in
API 600.
2. The difference between API 600 and BS 1414 is that this standard is
extended to cover carbon steel valves in sizes 26" NB to 42" NB in class
150 and class 300.
3. BS 1414 gives provision for the soft seal rings. The seat could be fitted
either in body seats or wedge seats. They shall compress down to the
level of metal seats to give tight shut off. They shall also give a tight
metal-to-metal seal through the valve if soft seats are damaged or
removed. The seal rings shall withstand minimum 2000 cycles of
operation and there shall be no evidence of cold flow.
4. Provision of lantern ring in stuffing box for class 300 and above are
recommended.

construction. Manufacturers have adopted the sandwich (wafer)
construction without the end pieces in case of valves with exotic
material of construction.
7. When fire safe design is provided for the seats the material for steam
seals and gaskets shall also be suitably selected.
10. The hydrostatic seat test is an optional test for soft seated ball valves.
Hydrostatically seat tested soft seated ball valve might have a reduced
performance capability in some subsequent services at low differential
pressures. This could be due to cold flow of PTFE under higher
pressure.
Rev. : R0
