1 EQUIPMENT

1.1 LADLE TURRET, TWO FIX ARMS TYPE, ELECTRIC MAIN DRIVE

1.1.1 DESCRIPTION
The ladle turret is used to rotate the full ladle from loading position to casting position while the empty
ladle is moved from the casting to the charging position.
The turret has two arms mounted at 180 degrees to each other, each arm is designed to receive a
ladle.
It is provided one emergency position that coincides with the charging position.
The turret is rotated by an electrically driven motor.
A backup drive system is available in case of electric power failure. It is driven by compressed air
power.

1.2 LADLE WEIGHING SYSTEM (FUTURE FUNCTION)

1.2.1 DESCRIPTION
Each arm of ladle turret is equipped with a weighing system.
The system consists of :
 N. 4 load cells
 N.1 ring/brush system used to transmit the weight signals from the mobile part of turret to PLC.

 Weight display
The system reads the gross weight by the weight transmitters, selects the one of the arm at cast
position, subtracts the tare (empty ladle weight) and shows the resultant net weight onto HMIs and
giant display (if included in the supply). Operator has to manualy enter the value of empty ladle
weight (tare) by means of HMIs.

 Time to end ladle

The system calculates and displays the time left to end the steel in ladle. The function uses the
steel flow info coming by the strands and the actual net weight of steel in ladle to forecast the
time to end ladle.

1.3 LADLE TURRET ROTATION OPERATING SEQUENCES

1.3.1 NORMAL ROTATION

The turret is rotated by an electrically driven motor.

The turret position is detected by an incremental encoder.
Absolute position is obtained by means of a reset limit switch

1.3.2 EMERGENCY ROTATION

Some emergency rotation mushroom pushbuttons are provided along the cast floor escape routes.
They control the rotation of turret in order to remove the ladle at cast position sending it to the
emergency position where an empty ladle can collect the steel spilled form the ladle on the turret arm.

1.1 LADLE TURRET, TWO FIX ARMS TYPE, PNEUMATIC DRIVE

1.3.3 DESCRIPTION
It is provided an emergency rotation backup which can be used in case of failure of the electrical
equipment; the rotation is achieved by a pneumatic motor manually controlled.
Pneumatic motor must be lubrified when not in use and rotation is controlled by the electric motor.
Because this a pneumatic solenoid valve assures lubrication by sending lubrified air through the
motor while electric rotation is on run.

3 OPERATOR BASIC INTERFACES

3.1 OPERATOR LEVEL AND CONTROL MODES

3.1.1 LADLE T URRET, T WO FIX ARMS T YPE, ELECTRIC MAIN DRIVE

Control level:

Only local level is provided

Control modes:

Semiautomatic

The rotation is controlled by the operator at the Ladle turret and Tundish level control station
=25BA.P05.

The semiautomatic rotation start is manually controlled by a lightpushbutton.

Start conditions:
 An arm must be at cast or park position.
 Tundish out of interference. Possible causes of tundish interference may be:
1. A tundish car at cast postion.
2. A Tundish at cast position and not lowered below intermediate position.
The best way to assure the minimum interlocks due to the tundish position is to do a “on field”
check during startup. The result of the check will suggest the best way to handle these interlocks.
As default the SW will consider all possible interlocks mix. The unusefull interlocks will be
removed after the startup check.

Permanent interlocks for rotation:

 No emergency stops active
 Electric motor ready.
 Brakes ready and open (if any)

Cycle:
 Start by pushing of cycle start lightpushbutton
 Electric motor brake opening
 Start of electric motor, rotation. Rotation direction is the one that allows to keep over the launder
the ladle comming out from cast position.
 Acceleration up to full speed
 Speed slow down at stop position approaching.
 Stop of rotation at stop position reaching.
 Electric motor brake closing

Cycle may be stop anytime by pushing again the start lightpushbutton or by controlling a manual
rotation through CW/CCW selector switch on the same control desk.

Manual
The rotation is controlled by the operator at the Ladle turret and Tundish level control station.
The rotation start and stop are manually controlled by the related selector switch.
The selector switch control must be keept ON while turret is moving.
The rotation stops automatically every time an arm achieves the cast position.
The position of the turret is detected by an encoder used to detect the two arms cast positions and the
slowdown areas.
The cycle is the same of the semiautomatic one but the rotation may stop anytime just releasing the
selector switch.

Emergency rotation
This mode is always enabled.
The rotation is controlled by the operator from:
 Emergency stations on casting floor; these stations are located on the casting floor escape
routes. The emergency rotation control is actuated by the mushroom pushbuttons
The operator can recover the emergency by retracting the emergency stop push/pull button.
The retracting the emergency push button while the turret is rotating toward the emergency position
causes the turret stop.
The emergency overwrites all the other controls.
The emergency bypasses all the interlocks and for this reason has to be used for emergencies only.

Emergency stop
This mode is always enabled.
Emergency stop push/pull buttons are provided, located on the ladle turret control station.
The emergency stop push/pull buttons have to be pressed by the operator when a stop of the ladle
turret is needed to react at an electrical failure in order to avoid people or equipment damage.
When anyone of the emergency stop push/pull buttons is pressed, the motor stops and the brake is
closed.
When one of the emergency stop has been pressed an alarm is generated on HMI.
The movements are enabled again only after the retracting of all the emergency mushroom buttons
AND the pushing of the reset lightpushbuttons close to the mushrooms.
When all the emergency stops are removed and reset the motor remains stop until the operator
performs a new control.
