Die museum is ingerig in
Gideon Malherbe se huis,
waarvan die grondvloer
deels gerestoureer is. Dis
nie net die muurpapier
wat jou oog vang nie;
oorspronklike meubels
uit die 19e eeu neem
jou terug na die tyd
van geheime vergaderings
en gesinne met 16 kinders.
Die drukpers: van toeka tot nou
Die Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners
is op 14 Augustus 1875 in hierdie huis
gestig. Kom besigtig die drukpers waarop
Die Afrikaanse Patriot, die eerste Afrikaanse
koerant, gedruk is.
Die eerste geskrifte

van geskrewe Afrikaans? Kom beskou 'n
koplesboek van nader en vind uit hoe
Abu Bakr Efendi en ander die Arabiese

Op die eerste verdieping bied oudiovisuele
uitstallings en interaktiewe aktiwiteite
jou 'n oorsig oor die wortels, variteite en
ander aspekte van Afrikaans. Kom vind uit
waar die woord piesangvandaan kom en
luister hoe mense vanaf Mitchells Plain
tot in Namakwaland Afrikaans op hul eie
unieke manier praat.

Ons beloof 'n onvergeetlike uitstappie vir
leerders van alle ouderdomme. Opvoeders
kan uit kurrikulumgebaseerde onderwerpe
kies en werkskaarte word verskaf. Ons
beveel aan dat leerders die museum n die

Did you know that the roots of Afrikaans can be traced back to three
continents, namely Asia, Europe and Africa? The architect Jan van Wijk designed the
Taalmonument in such a way that it would give recognition to these widespread
roots of Afrikaans. Visit us if you are curious to fnd out more!
A tour through the museums exhibits will inform you about the
history and diversity of Afrikaans, the mother tongue of 6 million South
Africans, including 55 % of the people in the Western Cape.

plaque in honour of the architect Jan van
Wijk, whose ashes have been interred here.

The museum is situated in
Gideon Malherbe's house,
the ground foor of which
has been partially restored.
Its not only the wallpaper
that will intrigue you;
original furniture from
the 19th century will
take you back to the era
of secret meetings and
families of 16 children.
Printing: then and now
The Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners
(Association of True Afrikaners) was
established in this house on 14 August
1875. The museum is home to the printing
press on which Die Afrikaanse Patriot, the
frst Afrikaans newspaper, was printed.
The frst documents
Did you know that Afrikaans in Arabic
script was one of the earliest versions of
written Afrikaans? Come take a closer look
at a koplesboek and discover how Abu
Bakr Efendi and others used the Arabic
alphabet to write Afrikaans.
Educational AND fun
On the frst foor audiovisual exhibits and
interactive activities give an overview of
the roots, variants and other aspects of
Afrikaans. Come and learn more about the
origin of words such as piesang(banana)
and hear how people from Mitchells
Plain to Namaqualand speak Afrikaans.
Guided tours
We promise an unforgettable outing
for learners of all ages. Educators are
ofered a choice of curriculum-based
educational programmes, which include
work sheets. We advise that learners visit
both the museum and monument.
