The Royal Family portrayed – the pompous
or the ridiculous?
British attitudes to the Royal Family are varied. They range
from the very positive and supportive to the extreme
anti-monarchist, and the latter stem mainly from the fact
that the royals’ contributions to the country’s welfare
is relatively modest. Regardless of attitudes, however,
the Royal Family has always fascinated people, not only
in the UK, but also in more distant parts of the world.
What attracts attention is the contrasts – pageantry and
wealth on one hand, and the longing to break free and
be independent on the other. Any series which touches
upon life as a royal ought to highlight these contrasts.
Currently, one of the most successful series about the
Royal Family is The Crown, a well-written and well-
performed drama, whose plot concentrates on the life
of Elizabeth II (Claire Foy/Olivia Colman) and her family
in the light of major events such as the Suez Crisis or
the Great Smog in London. Queen Elizabeth is faithfully
portrayed as a reticent, dignified and brave ruler, whose
life is almost completely subordinated to the country and
the crown. Often reserved and respectful of the rules, she
stands in stark contrast to many of the other characters,
for example, Prince Philip (Matt Smith/Tobias Menzies) or
Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby/Helena Bonham Carter),
who are happy to bend the rules when circumstances
permit. The series is one of the most expensive shows

ever made. This is not surprising taking into account the
magnificent costumes and settings. Thanks to this, the
Windsors’ story is historically accurate and rendered with
great attention to detail. The Crown surprises the viewers
as it reveals facts about the Royal Family which have not
been widely discussed before, such as Prince Philip’s love
affairs or Prince Charles’ unhappy adolescence, which
undoubtedly influenced his adult life.
While The Crown attempts to depict royal life in a historically
accurate way (though not at the price of hiding emotions),
The Windsors has attempted to portray the family in
a more grotesque way, which makes no pretence of
reality. Low-budget and full of witty humour, the series
may surprise viewers with its direct approach to the
royals, and no topic seems to be taboo for its creators.
This time, The Queen and Prince Philip are absent from
the series (perhaps as a result of their age and position).
The show makes fun of all the vices of the royals: their
pomposity, laziness and detachment from ordinary life.
Prince William (or ‘Wills’, played by Hugh Skinner) is at
odds with his father (Harry Enfield) over the succession
and pretends to lead a very ordinary life with Princess
Kate (Louise Ford). Viewers will definitely have a good
laugh at Harry (Richard Goulding), who is illiterate and
learns about his family’s history from TV series like…
The Crown. On the other hand, Ellie White and Celeste
Dring, who play Beatrice and Eugenie, steal every scene by
perfectly ridiculing the aristocratic manner of speaking.
The two series I have reviewed have such different focus
that I am uncertain about making a recommendation
to watch just one of them. Perhaps, to get a balance
between the serious and the ridiculous, you should see
both and form your own opinion.
