I. Topic: Selecting and Organizing Information With Outlines

II. Objectives:

• Distinguish between the approaches for selecting and organizing information.

• Select and practice necessary outlining for a writing topic.
• Use different graphic organizers in selecting and organizing information.

III. Most Essential Learning Competency:

Expand the content of an outline using notes from primary and secondary sources. (EN8WC-IIIc-1.1.6.)

IV. Content/Discussion

Class starts with greetings, some arranging of chairs and places, attendance.

Read and try to understand this paragraph:

This is an example of incoherent writing.

Who here experienced not knowing how to organize your thoughts on paper? (some students raise
hands)
Now, how do we resolve this?
There are ways to organize one’s thoughts. One method to organize one’s thought in writing is to
make an O U T L I N E and another is through the use of B R A I N S T O R M I N G.

LET’S BRAINSTORM
In writing anything, you already have these ideas that come to mind from your experience and the
knowledge that you already have. Sometimes, when I feel overwhelmed by ideas about a certain
topic what you need to do to help you remember and keep note of your ideas is to create a mindmap.

What is Brainstorming? Brainstorming is a group exercise in which each person expresses their ideas
as they arise. At the end of the session, ideas are classified and prioritized for further action.

(Present example of a mind map.)

GROUP WORK
Let’s say for example, this is my topic: Being the only/oldest/middle/youngest child makes you…
Survey: GROUP YOURSELVES INTO: Eldest children, Middle Children, Youngest, Only child.
STEP ONE: BRAINSTORMING
Instructions: On your piece of cartolina, brainstorm with your group members and make a mind map. It
can be a word or a phrase. You have five minutes to paste it on the board.

HOW TO DO AN OUTLINE
What is outlining?
An outline is a general plan of what you will write in your paper. It will display the arrangement of your
content, what each paragraph will cover, and the relationships between your thoughts graphically.

When you write, you need to organize or arrange your ideas in an order that makes sense or is easily
understood. It is only when you organize ideas that you will be able to translate raw information into a
form that will communicate meaning to others.
There are two types of outlines: First is the topic outline.

STEP TWO: INFORMATION OVERLOAD

I am going to show you a video, as well as, read about a short story about the topic that you have
made that I think, will be useful to what you’re going to create.

Now, the video is an interview, correct? Do you think the things that the person/s said are valid and
true?
How about the short story? Is it true, based on true, or fake?
What could be the difference in their information?
There are two types of sources of information. The interview is an example of what we call a Primary
source of information.
Much of the ideas that you will include in your writing will be coming from various sources. It will help a
lot if you know exactly where to get these information. This is why we need to learning or KNOW
YOUR SOURCES.

STEP THREE: OUTLINING

Now that you have done your brainstorming. Let’s create an outline. Try to arrange your ideas
And I’m here to show you the basic format of an outline:

Topic : Why the School Year Should be Shorter

Thesis Statement : The school year is too long, and should be shortened to benefit students and
teachers, save districts money, and improve test scores and academic results.

Instructions: This next step is to try to arrange all your ideas into the format.
(insert picture of a format)

Reflection: What have you noticed while creating the mind map and outline?
What is the difference between writing an essay with an outline vs without an outline?
Do you think outlining is a necessary part of essay writing?

V. Performance task:
Instructions: Assume that you are invited to speak in an assembly of students on the topic: BEING
A FAIRYTALE CYNIC.
Brainstorm and create an outline of the topic you want to talk about in front of the assembly.
Create an essay from the outline you have created and you will memorize your piece.
Your task will be graded according to this rubric: (Present rubric on screen).
