ISCRIZIONI E FRAMMENTI EPIGRAFICI.

Riputiamo far cosa grata ed utile al lettore dedicando quest’appendice


alle iscrizioni e frammenti epigrafici rinvenuti nei varî scavi praticati
nell’Anfiteatro Flavio; e già pubblicate nel C. I. L. VI, dallo
Hübner [1170], dal Lanciani [1171], e più recentemente da Cristiano
Huelsen [1172].
Fra i frammenti che siamo per trascrivere ve ne sono parecchi che
ricordano personaggi illustri appartenenti all’ordine senatorio, ed il nome
di clarissimi viri, i quali, come è noto, avean diritto di sedere in posti
determinati.
Ma prima di trascriverli, mi sia lecito fare osservare che queste iscrizioni
si dividono in due gruppi cronologici; e che il primo di essi appartiene ad
un periodo anteriore alla rovina del vetusto podio, e quindi all’iscrizione
che ricorda i restauri di Valentiniano. Ignoriamo il tempo preciso in cui
ebbe principio l’uso di graffiare i nomi del titolare di ciascun locus e che
costituiscono il secondo gruppo; ma la paleografia delle iscrizioni più
antiche, incise sull’orlo dei massi della cornice, al difuori della ringhiera,
indica che possan esse appartenere agli inizi del secolo IV.
«Il primo gruppo è inciso su massi, i quali recano dall’altra faccia la nota
iscrizione di Valentiano. Dominano in quello le sigle indicanti gruppi di
più chiarissimi personaggi, il che indica essersi incominciato a segnare
non tanto il posto individuale, quanto quello delle famiglie.
«Tutte le incisioni di questo gruppo sono incise da tre mani: la prima
relativamente buona; la seconda mediocre; la terza infelice assai: questa
progressione di peggioramento sta in ragione diretta delle distanze delle
epigrafi dall’orlo del masso.
«Le abrasioni, finalmente, e cancellature sono rarissime nelle epigrafi
più vicine all’orlo; più frequenti nelle altre. Il marmo tuttavia è stato
scalpellato una volta sola, mentre nel gruppo posteriore al terremoto lo
scalpello ha lavorato tre o quattro volte» [1173]. Le leggende scalpellate,
ma pure riconoscibili sono indicate con un punto (.).

Nel trascrivere a suo luogo le leggende, divideremo per mezzo di due
linee orizzontali quelle che si trovano presso l’orlo a della cornice, da
quelle poste dentro la cassa delle cancellature b, che sono meno antiche.
Le leggende cancellate e quindi più antiche e appena riconoscibili, le
contradistingueremo mettendo sotto le lettere stesse un puntino, così per
es.: .
