Our line of High Temperature Thermocouples are specially designed for temperatures
ranging from 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit to 4,235 degrees Fahrenheit. Sheath materials
available from stock include tantalum, molybdenum, zirconia, alumina, and quartz. Chief
characteristics of the sheath materials are summarized.
TANTALUM (Ta):
Melting point of 5,430 degrees Fahrenheit; the most corrosive resistant of the refractory metals. Corrosion
resistant to most chemicals up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Good in reducing or neutral atmospheres
at elevated temperatures. Poor in oxidizing atmospheres and excellent for thermal cycling applications.
MOLYBDENUM (Mo):
Excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. Melting point at 4,750 degrees Fahrenheit;
excellent in reducing or neutral atmospheres. Having low thermal-neutron capture cross-section and
excellent thermal shock resistance. Poor in oxidizing atmospheres but excellent for thermal cycling
applications.
ALUMINA (Al2O3):
This high purity sintered aluminum oxide (99.5% AI2O3, dense) has a melting point of 3,686 degrees
Fahrenheit (2,030 degrees Celsius) and an upper working service temperature of 3,482 degrees Fahrenheit
(1,900 degrees Celsius). It can be used in oxidizing, reducing, or high vacuum applications. Not
recommended for use in high vacuum environments in the presence of graphite at temperatures exceeding
2,372 degrees Fahrenheit (1,300 degrees Celsius). Alumina (AI2O3) has high thermal conductivity and
therefore fairly good resistance to thermal shock. Having excellent resistance to chemical attack but poor
for thermal cycling applications.
ZIRCONIA (ZRO2):
Zirconium oxide is fully stabilized with exceptional refractory properties, which include the highest
melting point and lowest thermal conductivity of any refractory. It is not wetted by most molten metals,
is generally inert to oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, and resists most chemical reactions. Usable to
4400°F. It is impervious (0% water absorption). Poor for thermal cycling applications.
FUSED QUARTZ:
Fused silica consists of 99,9%SiOi; most acids, metals, chlorine, and bromine are reactive with fused
silica at ordinary temperatures. Slightly attacked by alkaline solutions, the reaction rate increasing with
temperature and concentration of solution. Fused silica has an extremely low coefficient of thermal
expansion, 0.55 x 10-6 cm/cm/°F (0-572 degrees Fahrenheit). This is 1/34th that of copper, 1/17th of
platinum and 1/9th of tungsten. This low expansion produces a high thermal shock resistance, heated to
2700’’F, and immersed into ice water without cracking. Good for oxidizing, inert or neutral atmospheres
to 3,050 degrees Fahrenheit. Excellent for thermal shock applications; devitrifies rapidly at temperatures
above 1,800 degree Fahrenheit causing microscopic surface cracking (hazy film) upon cooling.
Applications:
Oxidizing, Vacuum, Reducing and Inert Gas Furnaces, Gas Burners, Ovens, Nuclear Power
Generating Plants, Exhaust Gases, Wind Tunnels, Pollution Control, and High Temperature
Process Control Applications.
This High Temperature Thermocouple Probe is also available with an optional, four inch
long support tube attached to the connector end. The purpose of the support tube is to
eliminate any damage to the refractory sheath that may be caused by the mounting bushing.
The support tube is 1/8 inch larger in diameter than the thermocouple sheath. If a support
tube is desired, insert the suffix (ST) onto the part number.

Many high pressure applications such as reaction chambers often times require temperature
monitoring and control at temperatures from 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit to over 3,000 degrees
Fahrenheit. Since refractory or ceramic sheathed thermocouples are used to monitor these
temperatures, the strength of these sheaths are not sufficient to withstand these external
pressures at these temperatures. In order to prevent the sheaths from collapsing, we have
drilled a small hole through the sheath at the sensing tip end, this feature allows the internal
pressure inside the sheath to equalize with the external pressure; thus, preventing the sheath
from collapsing. Also, we have built a gas-tight pressure seal into the thermowell; so that,
high pressure gases will not escape through the mineral oxide insulation.

Since all metal thermowells have a female NPT connection thread and
all connection heads also have a female NPT thread; a nipple with male
NPT threads on both ends is required to attach the connection head
to the thermowell. A secondary purpose of the nipple is to physically
remove the connection head from a hot thermowell to a safe distance
so that an operator can safely open the connection head and make
necessary replacements or repairs.
Material:
Thermowells consist of drilled bar stock.
Standard well materials include brass (ASTM B-16),
carbon steel (C-1018), and stainless steel (A.I.S.I
B-16). Wells are also available in special grades
of stainless steel, chrome-molybdenum alloys,
silicon bronze, Hastelloy B and C, nickle, titanium,
inconel, and monel. The particular choice is usually
determined by the corrosive conditions under which
the thermowell must operate-commensurate with
the maximum service pressure and temperature.

In addition to straight assembly units, we offer a right angle type cold leg extension. We
use a general purpose (GP) connector head to make the bend instead of using a pipe elbow.
This GP connector allows easier maintenance, servicing and replacement of components;
thus reducing your overall costs.
The cold leg consists of a carbon steel pipe of a specified length with 1/2” NPT threaded
ends. The carbon steel extension terminates in a GP connection head with a 2 wire terminal
block inside, the exit port is 1/2” NPT. Maximum service temperature of the cold leg and the
GP connector is 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
When ordering this cold leg extension assembly, start with the
Part No. of the thermocouple or RTD assembly you require.

Our thermocouple assemblies with various ceramic protection tubes are designed for high
temperature applications. All units use a stainless steel support tube which protects the
ceramic sheath from breakage while using an adjustable mounting adaptor. All units are
closed end and are gas tight, these units can be used in vacuum furnaces. A secondary
wire seal is made at the terminating end to assure a vacuum tight seal even if the ceramic
hot section is damaged. All units have an ungrounded thermal junction.

Our thermocouple assemblies with NC-11 protection sheaths are designed for high
temperature use. Our metal-ceramic protection tube NC-11 is a hard, abrasion-resistant,
dense material made from two high temperature compatible materials. The combination
of this high temperature metal and oxide produces a product with three very important
properties. The properties are: superior oxidation resistance to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit,
thermal conductivity comparable to that of stainless steel, and good resistance to wetting by
most molten metals.
Applications Include:
• Molten copper and brass to 2,100 degrees • Molten zinc to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit
Fahrenheit intermittent and continuous
immersions. • Molten lead to 650 degrees Fahrenheit
• Corrosive SO and SO gas (to 2,500 degrees • Basic steel and stags to 3,150 degrees
Fahrenheit) and SO and HP gas (to 2,000 Fahrenheit (intermittent) and 2,500 degrees
degrees Fahrenheit). Fahrenheit (continuous in open hearth and
general foundry practices).
• Open hearth furnace checker chambers to
2,450 degrees Fahrenheit. • Fluid bed cement process with severe
corrosion and temperature to 2,400 degrees
• Pelletizing chamber of Taconite refining Fahrenheit (fluid method of producing

The NC-12 protection tube is a dense, sintered ceramic especially designed for use
in many molten non-ferrous metals and corrosive chemicals. It is very strong, thermally
shock resistant and dimensionally stable. Additionally NC-12 is vacuum-tight and has high
electrical resistance. Mechanical strength is retained at extremely high temperatures (over
1,000 degrees Celsius in air). These features together with very low wear resistance, makes
NC-12 an ideal thermocouple protection tube for applications such as molten aluminum,
lead, tin, and zinc. Preheating is not necessary because NC-12 has a very low thermal
expansion coefficient.
Our NC-12 Protection tubes are also recommended for use in oxidizing environments
to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Most acids, such as hydrochloric, nitric, sulphuric, and
phosphoric, do not attack NC-12. This material is also resistant to hydrogen gas. It is not
recommended for use with caustic solutions and hydrofluoric acid.

Our Ribbon Thermocouples for surface temperature measurement contains a 0.002 inch
thick loop-ribbon junction inside a spring-loaded protective shield. When applied against any
surface, the protective shield retracts enough to allow the ribbon junction to make intimate
contact with the wall. Because the ribbon junction eliminates conduction errors caused
by the stem of the thermocouple, surface temperature of any wall or object is measured
accurately. Response time of this new design is in the low milliseconds. Temperature range
is from cryogenic to 600 degrees Fahrenheit (higher temperature ranges on special request).

The Trident Thermocouple probe has an exposed ribbon style element. The ribbon element
is 0.002 inches thick, by 0.060 inches wide. Featuring spring-like stainless steel side guards
to protect the element from accidental damage. This sensor has no measurable conduction
error and is ideal for all types of surface contact measurements. Examples include: cloth,
textiles, thin plastics, rotating drums, hot plates, and/or any surface whose temperature is
desired. This sensor can even measure the temperature difference between black and white
on a sheet of paper when heated by a 60 watt light bulb from a distance of two feet.
Response time of this Trident probe is in the low milliseconds and usually limited only by
the meter taking the temperature readings. Standard termination style is a four inch plastic

The Surface mounted unit contains the right angle thermocouple on the end of the
threaded thermowell. The thermowell is stainless steel with straight threads (7/16 NF-2 by
13/32 inches long). It also contains an O-ring seal (good to 450 degrees Fahrenheit). At
higher temperatures, the O-ring must be removed and replaced by a copper washer. This
fluid mounted unit is ideal for applications requiring gas or liquid temperatures at the inner
surface of a container wall.
The fixed probe unit contains a 1/4 inch OD stainless steel probe on the end of a straight
thread mounting bushing (size of threads 1/2-20 NF x 3/4 inches long). The fixed probe unit
is ideal for measuring gas or liquid temperatures inside a container under high pressures.

This Right-Angle Ribbon sensor features a thermal junction of thin ribbons welded together
at the sensing tip. These ribbons are brought out from opposing sides of the probe between
the interface of an insulting rod and cone assembly. The ribbons in the vicinity of the media
being measured are parallel to the plane of the heat source. Thus, both the ribbons and
the thermal junction are heated simultaneously and conduction errors are eliminated. The
ribbon elements also allow for fast response times to temperature change. Since there
is a large surface area to cross-section area ratio in the ribbon design as compared to
round wires.

This series of Right Angle Ribbon Thermocouple features a stainless steel diaphragm
over the ribbon thermal junction. This diaphragm is 0.015 inches thick. The design is used
whenever a 100% sanitary requirement is required. Applications such as manufacturing
foods or medicines occasionally require this feature.
This Right Angle Ribbon Thermocouple sensor features a thermal junction of thin ribbons
welded together at the sensing tip. These ribbons are brought out from opposing sides
of the probe between the interface of an insulating rod and cone assembly. The ribbons
in the vicinity of the media being measured are parallel to the plane of the heat source.
Thus, both the ribbons and the thermal junction are heated simultaneously and conduction
errors are eliminated. The ribbon elements also allow for fast response times to temperature
change. Since there is a large surface area to cross-section area ratio in the ribbon design
as compared to round wires.
This assembled ribbon junction is then installed into a special thermowell which has a
0.015 inch thick diaphragm on its tip. Thus, the thermal junction is now in intimate thermal
contact with the stainless steel diaphragm. This produces an electrically grounded thermal
junction. When an ungrounded junction is desired, a thin disc of electrical insulating material
is inserted between the junction and the diaphragm. Special attention is made to use a
material with good heat transfer properties.

The C8-SE model Extrude-O-Couple is designed to fit into standard holes existing in
most nozzles for thermocouple or pressure gauge applications. This thermocouple has a
two-piece stainless steel thermowell which allows for better sealing at the conical surface,
automatically self aligning even in slightly offset machined holes. All connector types are
available, as are thermocouple types E, J, K, N & T.
The C8-LE model Extrude-O-Couple is designed for use on thick-walled extruder nozzles
requiring long thermocouples to fit into deep holes. Also it is designed to fit into holes in most
nozzles which are modified to receive thermocouples or pressure gauges. The Nanmac

The Fixed Immersion Tip unit includes a gland nut and a thermowell. The sensing tip
of the thermowell has a wedge shaped tip to minimize the shear effects. Therefore, the
leading edge of the wedge must face up-stream (into the oncoming plastic). A peen mark
is machined onto the thermocouple near the connector to indicate orientation for this
unidirectional installation. Also, wrench flats are provided to hold the thermocouple in place
while tightening the gland nut. Maximum service temperature and pressure rating of this unit
is 750 degrees Fahrenheit and 20,000 psi respectively.
The Adjustable Immersion Tip unit in similar to the fixed unit; except, the immersion length
is adjustable to any depth from flush on inner wall (to one inch immersion). Also, the sensing
tip is omnidirectional instead of unidirectional and spherically shaped to minimize shear
effects. On the connector end of this unit there are circular grooves machined into the shaft
at 1/10 inch intervals. These grooves are for indicating the insertion depth of the sensing tip
while the unit is installed. After installation and before plastic hardens/freezes you simply
screw the thermowell in or out to the desired insertion depth. An internal O-ring provides a
leak tight seal to 10,000 psi at melt temperatures of up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Adjustment
needs to be done either while
plastic is in its liquid state or upon
initial installation when there is no
plastic present.

In-Wall Temperature
Used as an in-wall temperature measuring probe, the Nanmac Self-Renewing Thermocouple
can be positioned to an accuracy of better than ±0.001 inches. This feature, together with
the fast response times of this probe make it an ideal in-wall thermocouple.
Immersion Temperature
Under certain applications the Nanmac Self-Renewing Thermocouple can be used for
immersion applications such as within the stream of flowing plastic or high velocity gases. It
is however recommended that Nanmac engineers should be consulted for the thermocouple
design best suited for immersion.

The standard probe contains Pt100 ohm RTD assembly with an aluminum general purpose
(GP) head. A terminal block is mounted on the interior of the GP head. The GP head has
1/2” NPT threads where the probe is mounted and a 1/2” NPT conduit outlet for your wire
connections. This RTD assembly is also available with a four inch long stainless steel support
tube for use with ceramic sheaths and adjustable mounting fittings. The support tube is an
1/8” larger in diameter than the sheath diameter. When ordering with support tube add the
suffix (ST) to the part number. Standard support tube is four inches long and can be made
to most any length required, mounting bushing is eliminated when ST is applied.

Units are made with stainless steel glands and have either
O-ring (OR series), pipe thread (A series), or conical (HP
series) metal-to-metal seals. They can be rated for use from
low vacuum to 20,000 psi and temperatures to 500 degrees
Fahrenheit. All standard glands contain #24 gage (0.020”)
AWG solid copper conductors inside an 1/8 inch diameter
stainless steel tube. These copper conductors are insulated
from each other and the tube wall by a high temperature
ceramic. The 1/8 inch stainless steel tubes containing the
copper conductors are flexible and can be bent to most
any desired angle in a radius as small as 1/2 inch. The
stainless steel tube provides excellent shielding for each pair
of conductors against unwanted electromagnetic noise or
stray voltage pickup. These tubes, when more than one, are
staggered in length.
All standard pressure and amperage ratings are based on 68°F conditions.
