JASA Seniors Keep it Moving with a 5K Run/Walk

BY AMANDA MOSES

On October 7th, members of Starrett JASA Senior

Center gathered at Spring Creek Park near Gateway
Mall for a 5K Run/Walk.
About 58 seniors donned bright orange JASA
caps, their most comfortable sneakers and ponchos
for a rainy morning during the 9th Annual East
Brooklyn 5K Run/Walk. East New York Restoration
hosted the event, which kicked off at 9:30 am and
included participants of all ages.
The course began at Gateway Drive, where run-
ners went down Erskine Street up to Vandalia Ave-
nue where they made their way to Stanley Avenue
and then back down to Flatlands Avenue, returning
to Gateway Drive.
“Persistence develops confidence: In 2022 JASA
Starrett City participation in this 5K was 30
members. In 2023 we had a total of 58 members
participate. JASA Starrett City promotes physical
exercise, and health and wellbeing among our cli-
ents so they may continue to thrive in their own
environment,” Donna Forde said, Project Director
for the JASA Starrett Senior Center.
After the event, attendees were invited for an af-
ternoon of family fun at Spring Creek Park, which
included games, fitness activities, light refresh-
ments and a Live DJ. In addition, all of those who
joined the walk/run received a medal.

October is Learning Disabilities

Awareness Month
(SPM Wire) Learning disabilities
can impact an individual’s oppor-
tunities in school and in life. Though
1 in 5 students across the country
have learning and attention issues,
many classroom envi-ronments are
not currently de-signed to help them
thrive.

October, which is Learning Dis-

abilities Awareness Month, is an
annual reminder to parents, edu-
cators, policymakers, and the com-
munity at large of the importance of
creating inclusive learning spaces that accept and understand all
students.

Fortunately, resources and solutions exist that can help impacted

Education Matters
Five Ways to Make Math Part of
Your Kids’ Daily Lives

(StatePoint) Mathematics can feel intimidating to a lot of students, but

by making it a part of your child’s daily life, they can have fun with the
subject, while beefing up their skills for STEM learning in the classroom.
Here are five ways to incorporate math into errands, chores and hobbies:

1. At the store: Involve your child in the process of shopping and making
home purchases. Let them use their skills in areas such as arithmetic,
percentages and fractions, to help you find the best deals, and to estimate
what the total cost of your cart will be at checkout. This is also a good
opportunity to talk budgeting and money management.
2. At the game: Make math fun at the stadium or arena. Whether your
child is an athlete, a fan, or both, sports can be an excellent way to bring
probability, averages and statistics into everyday conversation, along with
more advanced STEM concepts, like kinematics. To better understand the
performance of a particular team or athlete, kids can crunch numbers and
visualize data with graphs and charts.
3. In the kitchen: Whipping up dinner for the family? Baking a batch of
cookies for the school fundraiser? Have your child measure and weigh the Starrett Early Learning Center
recipe’s ingredients, convert from metric to English measurements, if 125 Schroeders Avenue - Brooklyn, New York 11239
needed, and set the oven timer and temperature. Like many household (718) 642-8724 Fax: (718) 642-3019
tasks, food preparation inherently involves numbers and mathematics.
The best part? You’ll also be encouraging the development of a practical life
skill.
4. While driving: Calculating fuel prices and efficiency, along with
estimated times of arrival, all involve basic math skills, and can be honed Great News!

5. On-the-go: Of course, for on-the-go math learning, and for the If your child was born in 2019(4K) or 2020(3K) he or she is eligible.

Runway 7’s NYFW Fall/Winter 2023 Showcase

BY AMANDA MOSES

Last month, Runway 7 once again impressed audiences at their New

York Fashion Week (NYFW) Fall/Winter 2023 showcase, intertwining
extravagant attire with Broadway worthy performances from
September 7th to September 10th at Sony Hall.
On September 9th, six designers stood out amongst the 110 brands
Runway 7 featured during their NYFW shows: Tara Bhuyan Couture,
Vintage Fusion Jewelry, 2Chique Boutique, Jingli Somya Gupta, Black
Role Model, and Pitaco. All hailing from different parts of the world and
various walks of life, these designers displayed intricate clothing that
spoke to both their ingenuity and diversity.
From a vintage upcycled wearable art brand Vintage Fusion Jewelry
to sustainable bridal wear Tara Bhuyan Couture—the pieces displayed
on September 9th were prime examples of green art.
Since Runway 7’s inception, the organization has uplifted artists,
many of whom were debuting for the first time, from across the globe.
In addition, Runway 7 has helped streamline the fashion world by of-
fering production and manufacturing services to their designers,
creating a 360-degree approach to working with brand partners.
Runway 7 also donated a percentage of its proceeds to Mount Sinai’s
Corinne Goldsmith Dickinson Center for Multiple Sclerosis, something
the company has done for several years.

On October 6th, the 61st New York Film Festival (NYFF) presented
Priscilla for its North American Premiere with the cast and crew on hand to Perform in New Jersey
discuss its creation.
Sofia Coppola’s biopic, Priscilla is not just another tale featuring the
“King of Rock and Roll,” but rather a sad love story following a naive young
girl who was forced to grow up too fast. Based on Priscilla Presley’s
autobiography, Elvis and Me, the film begins showcasing a 14-year-old
freshman girl living on a military base with her family when she is singled
out by a member of the armed forces and invited to a party held by Elvis
himself. It is from this point that we see a vulnerable, manipulative, and
complex side of Elvis Presley through the eyes of a high schooler.
“Even though it was taken from the book [Priscilla] had written, and the
stuff that was out there, also, the book was published in ’85, right so
memory is an interesting thing….But when we finally showed it to her, she
looked at Sophia and she was visibly emotional, having watched the movie
and then told Sofia that she really done her homework and that she really
loved it and that she got it right. I mean that was everything because you
want to you want to honor that story,” Producer Youree Henley said during
the October 6th NYFF61 press conference.
Priscilla (played by Cailee Spaeny) is wide-eyed and infatuated with Elvis
(actor Jacob Elordi), following his every instruction, from when she should
be available for his call to how she should dress. In the film, we can see
Elvis constantly reminding her that there are a million girls who would love
to be in Priscilla’s predicament, emphasizing that she was replaceable. The
relationship appeared to be less about true love, and more about Elvis’
need for adoration and his ability to groom young Priscilla to meet his
emotional needs. However, as she begins to grow older, perhaps young
motherhood was to be credited for this, Priscilla finds herself becoming
independent and numb to Elvis’ behavior.
“I grew up going to Graceland as a kid, so I understood the weight that
he [Elvis] carried,” Spaeny said, “I had no idea of her [Priscilla’s] side of the
story. And, you know, I’m surprised that this wasn’t sort of common
