ERA
What is Philippine Literature ?
- is the body of works, both oral and written,
that Filipinos, whether native, naturalized, or
foreign born, have created about the
experience of people living in or relating to
Philippine society.

Collection of text , both oral and written,


whether published as books, serialized in
periodicals, recorded tapes, etched in
bamboo, chanted, at home or recited on
fire, which are created by Filipinos of all
ages.
Reason for Studying Literature
To appreciate our Literary pieces.
For us to realize our literary limitations
conditioned by certain historical factors so
we can take steps to overcome them,
To understand that we have great noble
tradition which can served as means to
assimilate other culture and;
To show that Filipinos who truly love and
take pride in our own culture, we have to
manifest our deep concern for our own
literature and this we can do by studying the
literature for our country.
TIMELINES IN PHILIPPINE LITERATURE :
SOME HIGHLIGHTS
Philippine Literature in english is
phenomenological since the inception of
english in our culture;

Philippine literature is about four hundred


years old.
Timeline may not be necessary to the study
of literature, but since literature and history
are inescapably related it has become a map
up system which will aid us.

1. Pre-colonial period
the longest period in the Philippines
the literary outputs of this period cannot be called
substantial because much of it was oral.
Riddle - give an enigma or puzzle
Proverbs - wise saying or “ salawikain
Song - part of pre-colonial lit
Mimetic dances - - accompanied songs and rituals

Most significant and the longest form of pre-colonial


poetry was the folk epic.
Popular epics: BIAG NI LAM-ANG, HINILAWOD and
BANTUGAN AND INDARAPATRA AND SULAYMAN

3. THE NATIONALISTIC PERIOD (1864 - 1896)
The last of 19th century saw a new breed of writers
If the religion was thematic focused during spanish era,
a strong feeling of nationalism was the main agenda of
literary period.
the period was devided: Propaganda and the
Revolution
Shift of language (spanish to tagalog )
Bonifacio and Jacinto was the prominent writer
This period was truly significant because it introduced
a literature that was realistic and truly Filipino.
