Values of RESEARCH

It is a sophisticated approach to solving man’s

problems

Its ultimate goal is improving mankind

It has practical benefits to society

It has significant benefits to the investigator himself

• Rewarding personal experience

• Intellectual freedom (independence of thought) and self-improvement
• Requires him to think problems through specific operational terms
rather than unclear generalizations
• Gets to practice accurate, clear, concrete self expression
• Prestige
Characteristics of a
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Research begins in the mind of the researcher

• Originates from CURIOUS, OBSERVANT, and INQUISITIVE ATTITUDE

• Recognizes a problem situation and that it requires investigation

Research requires that the researcher articulate a

specific goal for the investigative process
• Requires skill of articulation to put into words CLEARLY, and
UNAMBIGUOUSLY what the problem is that the research intends to
tackle

Research demands a specific plan of action, a

systematic set of procedures
• A critical look at the problem is required early to ASCERTAIN ITS
FEASIBILITY or that it can be done, and if so, WHERE CAN THE DATA
BE FOUND; if it exists CAN IT BE ACCESSED; after the data is
accessed, WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH THEM, and so on
Characteristics of a
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Research can arrive at valid conclusions only on the basis
of specific, hard, verifiable, and measurable facts
vigorously obtained

• Data used in research must be interpreted – after the data has been
ACCUMULATED and PROCESSED, ARRANGED in categories, CONVERTED
to graphical presentation, ANALYZED STATISTICALLY or by any means of
manipulation
• There must be discovery of the MEANING of these data

Research is generally guided by constructs called

hypothesis

• Hypothesis: intuitive feeling; hunch; supposition or an EDUCATED GUESS

with respect to the OUTCOME of a problem
• Temporary constructs that facts either VERIFY or DISCOVERED TO BE
FALSE
Characteristics of a
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Research accepts critical assumptions that are axiomatic

and essential for the research process to proceed

• It is important to know what the researcher assumes with respect to the

project to enable others to judge the quality of the study
• SELF-EVIDENT TRUTHS

Research never dead-ends into finality

• Research by its nature is dynamic

• Genuine research EXPANDS THE RESEARCHER’S HORIZON until it extends
to infinity
