Q s1.4 - r2.1 Concentration and Amount of Chemical Change Questions
1. Zinc metal reacts with copper(II) sulfate solution (see right) according to the following equation:
Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) → ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
Determine the maximum mass of copper that can be deposited when 1.20 g of zinc is added to
50.0 cm3 of 2.00 x 10 −1 mol dm-−3 copper(II) sulfate solution.
2. Calculate the mass of carbon dioxide produced when 150 cm3 of 1.00 mol dm-−3 hydrochloric acid,
HCl(aq), is added to 10.0 g of calcium carbonate, CaCO3.
4. In order to determine the percentage of calcium carbonate in the shell of a hen’s egg a student
dissolved 1.572 g of the dried egg shell in 50.0 cm3 of 1.00 mol dm−3 hydrochloric acid. After all the
shell had completely reacted with the acid, the resulting solution was diluted to 250 cm3 in a
volumetric flask. 25.00 cm3 samples of this diluted solution were titrated with 0.100 mol dm−3 sodium
hydroxide solution using phenolphthalein as the indicator. The average volume of the NaOH(aq)
solution required to reach the end point was 19.40 cm3.
