LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 3
RATIO AND PROPORTION
Student’s Name: ___________________________________________ Grade and Section: _____________________
Date Received: _________________________ Date Submitted: ________________________
I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
The mathematical principles of proportion are sometimes difficult to imagine how you will use in real life.
Proportions are mathematical relationships and are perfect examples of math in the real world. Common examples
are grocery shopping, cooking, and getting from place to place.
In this learning activity sheet, you are going to understand the concept of proportion and its kinds. You are going
to differentiate direct, inverse, and partitive proportions, identify if the problem illustrates a direct, inverse, or partitive
proportions and solve direct, inverse, and partitive proportion problems.

II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM MELCs:

After going through the learning activity sheet, you are expected to:
a. Identify the different kinds of proportions and write examples of real-life situations for each, and
b. Solve problems involving direct, inverse and partitive proportion (ABM_BM11RP-If-4)
III. ACTIVITIES:
A. Let Us Review:
Let us recall the concepts that will be used in this lesson.
Concept 1: Ratio
To begin with, let us refresh your mind on the concept of ratio which is very essential in learning the
different kinds of proportion. Let’s take a look on it.
Consider this example:
Kristine, JA, and Joan decided to invest ₱200, 000.00 in a food cart business along Magsaysay St.
Sorsogon City. The table shows the specific amount of their investment. (Note, 1 share = Php 20,000)
BUSINESS PARTNERS SHARE AMOUNT OF INVESTMENT
5 shares out of 10 Php 100, 000.00
2 shares out of 10 Php 40, 000.00
3 shares out of 10 Php 60, 000.00
TOTAL INVESTMENT Php 200, 000.00
Questions:
1. What is the ratio of Kristine’s investment to the whole investment?
2. What is the ratio of JA’s investment to the whole investment?
3. What is the ratio of Joan’s investment to JA’s investment?
Answers:
a. ₱100,000: ₱200,000 𝑜𝑟 1: 2
b. ₱40,000: ₱200,000 𝑜𝑟 1: 5
c. ₱60,000: ₱40,000 𝑜𝑟 3: 2
A ratio is a comparison of two numbers. The ratio of two quantities of the same kind and units is a fraction
𝒂
that shows how many times the one quantity is of the other. Ratio of two numbers 𝒂 and 𝒃, (𝑏 ≠ 0) is 𝒂 ÷ 𝒃 or, 𝒃 and
is denoted by 𝒂 ∶ 𝒃 and is read as 𝒂 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒃.
In the ratio 𝒂 ∶ 𝒃, the quantities 𝒂 and 𝒃 are called the terms of the ratio, a is the antecedent and 𝑏 is the
consequent. We may separate the two numbers in the ratio with a colon {:}.
Examples:
Express the following in terms of ratio:
a. A certain store serves three flavors of ice cream: 4 parts keso, 6 parts tsokolate, and 11 parts
ube.
Solution: The ratio of ice cream flavors is 4: 6: 11.
b. A small merchandise has 12 female and 20 male employees. What is the ratio of female employees
to male employees?
Solution: The ratio of female employees to male employees is 3:5. Since there are 12 female employees
12 4 3 3
and 20 male employees, we have 20 = 4 · 5 = 5 .
Comparison of Ratios
In order to compare two given ratios, we follow the following steps:
Step 1: Obtain the given ratios.
Step 2: Express each one of them in the form of a fraction in the simplest form.
Step 3: If the resulting fractions in step 2 are dissimilar (fraction having different denominators), then get the
LCD of the given fractions and change them to similar fractions following the procedure in step 4.
Step 4: a) Take the first fraction in step 2, then divide the LCD obtained in step 3 by the denominator of the
fraction.

1
b) Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the quotient obtained in step 4a in order to get the
numerator of the new fraction with the LCD as its denominator.
c) Get the 2nd fraction in step 2. Repeat Step 4a and step 4b in changing the 2nd fraction similar to
the first fraction.
d) Now, the denominators of the 2 fractions will be the same.
Step 5 • Compare the numerator of the fractions obtained in step 4.
• The fraction having larger numerator is greater than the fraction with a smaller denominator
while the fraction with a smaller denominator is less than the fraction with the greater
denominator
Example of Ratio Comparison:
Compare the ratio 7 ∶ 16 and 4 ∶ 9.
7 4
Writing the given ratios as fractions we have 7 ∶ 16 = and, 4 ∶ 9 = .
16 9
Now, L.C.M. of 16 𝑎𝑛𝑑 9 𝑖𝑠 144.
7 7×9 63
Making the denominator of each fraction = 16×9 = 144 and
16
4 4×16 64
equal to 144, we have = 9×16 = 144
9
63 64 7 4
Clearly, 63 < 64. So, < → <
144 144 16 9
Concept 2: Rate
Let us consider this problem:
To make lemonade, Ardie bought a lemon that is to be mixed with water. He plans to mix each lemon with
250 mL of water. Express the given as rate.
Solution: The ratio and rate explain the equivalence of one measurement or quantity from the other. We
1 𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑛
say, the rate of 1 lemon in 250mL of water is expressed as 250 𝑚𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 .
Rate is a comparison of measurements that have different units, like cents and grams.
Example: To walk 10 kilometers in two hours is to walk at the rate of 5 𝑘𝑚/ℎ.
A Unit Rate is a rate with a denominator of 1.
Example: A man earns Php 200.00 per hour.
B. Let Us Study
A proportion is a mathematical sentence which states that the two ratios are the same.
It can be written in two ways:
𝑎 𝑐
• Two equal fractions = =𝑑
𝑏

• Using a colon =

Since the two ratios are equal, then the product of the means is equal to the product of the extremes. In symbols,
𝒂𝒅 = 𝒃𝒄. We call that, the test for a proportion. In solving problems involving ratio and proportion, we can also
use cross products to test whether the two ratios are equal if the ratios are written in fraction form.
20 4
Example 1: In the proportion = 5, are the two ratios equal?
25
𝑎 𝑐 20 4
Solution: 𝑏
= 𝑑 → 25 = 5
20 × 5 = 25 × 4
100 = 100
20 4
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒, 25 = 5 are equal.
15 𝑥
Example 2: Find the value of 𝑥 in = 70.
35
15 𝑥
Solution: = 70 → 15 × 70 = 35𝑥 → 1,050 = 35𝑥
35
1,050 35𝑥
Divide both sides by 35 to find the value of 𝑥: = → 30 = 𝑥
35 35
Therefore, the value of 𝑥 is 30.
Example 3: A box of timitim costs ₱75.00. How much does three (2) dozens cost?
Solution: 1 box of Timitim: cost of one box = 2 dozens of Timitim: cost of 2 dozen
1 box of Timitim 2 dozens of Timitim
=
₱75 per box 𝒙
1𝑥 = 75(24)
𝑥 = 1800
Thus, the cost of 2 dozen of Timitim is Php 1,800.00.
Kinds of Proportion
Direct Proportion. It is a relationship between two variables or quantities wherein, when one quantity increases,
the other quantity also increases and if one quantity decreases, the other quantity also decreases. As
an effect, the relationship between the two variables or quantities involved is constant.
That is: when y is directly proportional to x,
𝒚
then 𝒙 = 𝒌
and 𝒚 = 𝒌𝒙
where k is the constant of proportionality
Situations that 1. The number of computers to the number of students.
illustrates direct 2. The number of plants to the total cost.
proportion: 3. Your score in examination to your grade.
2
Example of Direct Proportion:
In GNHS, an ICT class with 45 students has 15 computers. With that ratio, 3 ICT classes has 135 students
and needs 45 computers.
Sample equation:
15 computers for 45 students; 45 computers for 135 students. This can be written as 𝟏𝟓: 𝟒𝟓 = 𝟒𝟓: 𝟏𝟑𝟓.
The number of computers is directly proportional to the number of students since the number of computers increases
as the number of students also increases with a constant value of 3.
Sample word problem:
If 10 caladium plants cost ₱2,000, then how much do 8 caladium plants cost?
The total amount of sales is directly proportional to the number of caladiums sold. Therefore, more caladium sold,
the more is the total amount of sales.
𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒖𝒎𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒅: 𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒔 = 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒖𝒎: 𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒔
𝟏𝟎: 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎 = 𝟖: 𝒙
If 10 caladium plants cost ₱2,000, it is expected that the cost of 8 caladium plants will be lesser than ₱2,000. In the
problem, the number of caladium plants and total cost are directly proportional hence the more caladium you buy,
the higher the cost will be or the lesser caladium you buy, the lower the cost.
Solved Word Problem:
It takes Riley 30 minutes to burn 200 calories in a treadmill. How long will it take for Riley to burn 400
calories?
𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 30 𝑥
Solution: 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 = 200 = 400 → 30 × 400 = 200 × 𝑥
1200 = 200𝑥
𝑥 = 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛.

Inverse or Indirect Proportion. It is a relationship between two variables or quantities wherein, when one quantity
increases, the other quantity decreases and if one quantity decreases, the other quantity also
increases. As an effect, the product between the two variables or quantities involved is constant
That is: when y is inversely proportional to x,
then 𝒙(𝒚) = 𝒌
𝒌
and 𝒚 =
𝒙
where k is the constant of proportionality

Situations that 1. The number of workers and the number of days to work
Illustrates indirect 2. The speed of a vehicle and the time of travel in a uniform distance
proportion: 3. The pressure exerted in a confined as and its pressure

Example of Direct Proportion:

In fencing a lot, it took 2 days for 3 persons to finish fencing the lot. While it took only 1 day for 6 persons to
do the task.
Sample equation:
3 persons for 2 days: 6 persons for 1 day. This can be written as 𝟑: 𝟐 = 𝟔: 𝟏.
The number of persons needed to do the work is inversely proportional to the number of days needed to finish the
work. Since the number of persons needed to do the job increases, the number of working days should decrease.
Sample word problem:
In a buko filtering factory, 2 employees can filter 20 bottles of buko juice in one hour. How long will it take 5
people to filter 20 bottles?
Take a look on this ratio:
𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒆: 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒓 = 𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒆: 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒓
Let: N1 is the 1st no. of employee to do the work = 2

H1 is the time it takes the 2 employees to do the work = 1 hr.

N2 is the 2nd no. of employees to do the work = 5 and
H2 is the time it takes the 2nd no. of employees to do the work = x

The problem illustrates an inverse proportion

Then: 𝑵𝟏 ∶ 𝑵𝟐 = 𝑯𝟐 ∶ 𝑯𝟏
By substitution: 𝟐 ∶ 𝟓 = 𝒙 ∶ 𝟏
𝟓𝒙 = 𝟐
𝟐
𝒙 = 𝟓 𝒉𝒓𝒔. 𝒐𝒓 𝟐𝟒 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔
If 2 employees can finish 20 bottles in one hour, then five employees will take less than an hour to manufacture
20 bottles. We see that more workers on a job would reduce the time to complete the task.
Solved Word Problem:
If 5 employees can finish 20 t-shirts in one hour, then 10 employees will take less than an hour to design 20
t-shirts.
Solution:
Let: N1 is the 1st no. of employee to do the work = 5
H1 is the time it takes the 2 employees to do the work = 1 hr.
N2 is the 2nd no. of employees to do the work = 10 and
H2 is the time it takes the 2nd no. of employees to do the work = x

3
The problem illustrates an inverse proportion
Then: 𝑵𝟏 ∶ 𝑵𝟐 = 𝑯𝟐 ∶ 𝑯𝟏
By substitution: 𝟓 ∶ 𝟏𝟎 = 𝒙 ∶ 𝟏
𝟏𝟎𝒙 = 𝟓
𝟓
𝒙 = 𝟏𝟎 𝒉𝒓𝒔. 𝒐𝒓 𝟑𝟎 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔
This problem can be described as, the more the employees on a job, the less time needed to finish the job.

Partitive Proportion. A whole is divided into parts that is proportioned into equal or unequal ratios.

Situations that 1. Dividing inheritance to children.

Illustrates partitive 2. The number of men and women who attended a seminar.
proportion: 3. Allotment of salary into different expenses.

Sample equation: 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝑨: 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝑩: 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝑪 = 𝟐: 𝟑: 𝟑

Sample word problem:

Jastine wants to donate her collection of figurines to her four friends in the ratio of 1:3:3:5. She has a total of
96 figurines. If her best friend wants the greatest number of figurines, how many figurines will she get?

Take a look on this ratio:

𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝑨: 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝑩: 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝑪: 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝑫 = 𝟏: 𝟑: 𝟑: 𝟓
In the problem, the total number of figurines is partitioned or divided into unequal ratio of 1:3:3:5, thus making use
of partitive proportions.

Two ways of solving this problem:

A. Algebraic Solution:
The given ratio is 1:3:3:5
Total number of figurines to be donated is 96.

Solution: 1𝑥 + 3𝑥 + 3𝑥 + 5𝑥 = 96
12𝑥 = 96
96
𝑥 = 12 𝑜𝑟 8
Jastine’s best friend got 8 × 5 = 40 figurines.
B. Arithmetic Solution:
The given ratio is 1:3:3:5
Total number of figurines to be donated is 96.
Solution: Given the ratio: 1:3:3:3 we add the terms 1 + 3 + 3 + 5 = 12
Get the term in the ratio corresponding to best friend’s share = 5
Solve by getting the fractional share which is 5 out of 12 parts
5
So: 12 𝑥 96 = 40 𝑓𝑖𝑔𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠
Jastine’s best friend got 40 figurines.
Solved Word Problem:
Dividend earnings of three business associates Symon, Leo and Jay-Ar is in the ratios of 3:4:5. If the total
dividend earnings amount to ₱360,000, how much will Symon, Leo and Jay-Ar receive?
Solution: Let 𝑛= dividend earnings
3𝑛 + 4𝑛 + 5𝑛 = ₱360,000 → 12𝑛 = 360,000
12𝑛 360,000
Find the value of n: 12 = 12 → 𝑛 = ₱30,000
Substitute the value of n then solve for the dividend earnings
Symon earnings = 3𝑛 = 3(₱30,000) = ₱90,000
Leo earnings = 4𝑛 = 4(₱30,000) = ₱120,000
Jay-Ar earnings = 5𝑛 = 5(₱30,000) = ₱150,000

C. Therefore, Symon will receive ₱90,000, Leo will receive ₱120,000, and Jay-Ar will receive ₱150,000.
