1.0 INTRODUCTION

This assignment covers Lab 3 CSTR in 40L to solve a saponification process. This project is a group project
and shall be embedded with a complex engineering problem questions.

2.0 COURSE AND PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEMS &
KNOWLEDGE PROFILE

This assignment/project/design addresses one (1) course outcomes and one (1) programme outcomes
(PO) which are mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required knowledge
profiles (WK) as shown in Table 1.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

At the end of this assignment, student should be able to:

1. Apply the fundamental knowledge/basic concepts in the classroom related to the chemical reaction
engineering problems.
2. Analysed the problem and evaluate the process variable effects towards the saponification process.
3. Evaluate the scope and limitations and come out with the acceptable solutions.
4. Establish team-work and networking among other groups.

4.0 DESCRIPTION

Your group is assigned to conduct experimental works on saponification process of ethyl acetate Et(Ac)
and sodium hydroxide, NaOH using a pilot plant scale CSTR-40L.

5.0 YOUR TASKS

i. Before commencing experimental works, you are required to arrange a consultation with lab
technician for enlightening in handling the reactor, whereas a consultation with lecturer is also compulsory
in discussing on theories. Based on consultations, propose a thorough experimental procedure to operate
the reactor without compromising the objectives of experiment.

ii. Residence time and operating temperature are two variables that affect the saponification
reaction in CSTR. Upon completion of experiments, perform relevant calculations and plot the graphs
accordingly. By considering an understanding of theories from textbooks and journals, discuss the patterns,
principles and relationship shown and place them in proper perspective.

iii. Overcoming the time constraints in data collecting process, it is strongly recommended to establish
a communication and discussion with other groups. Comparison with other results in prior works and
significance are helpful in making an impactful report.

6.0 SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

a) This is a group lab report and submission should be accomplished only by the group leader to the
designated folder.
b) Plagiarism is highly prohibited. PENALTY will be imposed to those involved.
c) Students are required to submit the lab report by the due deadline as advised by lecturer.
d) Provide relevant citations to support your expected result and discussion. Use APA format for the
list of references, refer to at least 3 journals and 2 books.
e) The cover page samples of the lab report are on the next pages.
f) For the submission, each group will need to submit two files which are:
i. Group Lab Report – in pdf
ii. Excel file that provides the calculations of data/results, figures and tables. It is compulsory to
start with a new excel file.
g) An open discussion about this task is available during the consultation hours (upon appointment)
and other communication means.
h) Submit your group manuscript and excel file to MS Team.
i) Due date: TBA
7.0 EVALUATION SCHEME

This section summarized the criteria to be evaluated in the assignment/project/design. The detailed rubric
