Gabii sa Kabilin, which started in 2007 through the efforts of the Ramon Aboitiz
Foundation Inc, this annual programme aims to help Cebuanos’ rich culture and
heritage and also to encourage the young people to appreciate the beauty of the
museums in the city. The idea of Gabii sa Kabilin was inspired by an event in
Berlin, Germany; The Long Nights of Museum which is similar to its Cebuano
counterpart with a ticket pass to enter participating sites, except that in Cebu,
there’s a free tartanilla with it.
The event educates the younger generation about their roots and promotes
intergenerational learning and cultural transmission. This also not only ensures
the continuity of tradition but also generates employment opportunities,
preserving cultural practices while contributing to the local economy.
The event also acts as a platform for dialogue and cultural exchange, promoting
understanding and tolerance among different communities. By showcasing the
Cebuano cultural practices and traditions, Gabii sa Kabilin fosters an
environment that encourages dialogue, respect, and appreciation for different
cultures, contributing to a more harmonious and inclusive society.
Gabii sa Kabilin has significant economic impact for the community. The event
attracts both local and international visitors, stimulating economic activity and
generating revenue for local businesses. Museums, exhibits, small food business
owners, and tartanilla drivers benefit from increased patronage during the event,
creating employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy.
