Definition:

A complex sentence is a type of sentence that contains an independent clause and at least one
dependent clause. Independent clauses can stand alone as complete sentences, while dependent clauses
cannot.

Components of a Complex Sentence:

1. Independent Clause: This part of the sentence can stand alone as a complete thought and functions
as the main idea. It contains a subject and a verb.

Example: She studied hard for her exams.

2. Dependent Clause: This part of the sentence cannot stand alone and relies on the independent
clause for context and meaning. It also contains a subject and a verb.

Example: Because she studied hard for her exams.

Examples of Complex Sentences:

1. When he arrived, he realized that he had forgotten his backpack.

- Independent Clause: He realized that he had forgotten his backpack.

- Dependent Clause: When he arrived.

2. Although it rained, we still had a great time at the park.

- Independent Clause: We still had a great time at the park.

- Dependent Clause: Although it rained.

3. Because she was feeling sick, she decided to stay home and rest.

- Independent Clause: She decided to stay home and rest.

- Dependent Clause: Because she was feeling sick.

4. Whenever I see a rainbow, I feel a sense of wonder.

- Independent Clause: I feel a sense of wonder.


- Dependent Clause: Whenever I see a rainbow.
