SECTION A (60 marks)

Answer all questions

1. a) Four wires with length of 60cm, 110cm, and 115cm are cut into pieces of the same
length. Find the greatest possible length for these pieces if no wire is left over.

b) There are 66 people in a bus. At the first stop 28 people got off and 19 people got in,
at the next stop 5 people got off and 13 people got in. How many people are there in the
bus now?.

c) Given the following logarithms log 2=0.3010 and log 3=0.4771 without using
mathematical table evaluate log 2.25.

3. a) Let ∪be a universal set and set A and B are the subsets where ∪=
𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑑, 𝑒, 𝑓, 𝑔, 𝑕, , 𝐴 = 𝑐, 𝑓, 𝑔, , 𝐵 = 𝑏, 𝑑, 𝑕
i. Find the number of subsets of set A
ii. Find 𝑛(𝐴′ ∩ 𝐵)

b) In a certain school, 42 students were asked about whether they like handball, football,
or both. It was found that the number of students who like both netball and football
was 3 times the number of students who like handball only. Furthermore, the number
of students who like football only was six more than twice the number of students who
like handball only.

i. Represent the information above in venn diagram


ii. Find the number of students who like handball only.
4. a) Find the equation of line T which passes through point A (2, 5) with the same gradient
as that of the line which passes through B (6, 5) and C (10, 7).

b) If A and B are complementary angles such that angle A is 18° less than angle B,
determine the angles.
5. a) The school director is about to build a new staff office with width 8m less than the
length. If the length of the building is 15m.Suggest the size of land that the director needs
to use to build the office.

b) PQR is an isosceles triangle in which PQ and PR are equal. If S is the midpoint of QR,
prove that ∆𝑃𝑄𝑆 and ∆𝑃𝑅𝑆 are congruent.

6. The United Republic of Tanzania bought an air plane bombardier for 6.4 million US
dollar. How much is this in Tanzania shillings? (Use 1 US Dollar=125 Japanese Yen and
1 Japanese Yen=Tsh.20)

7. a) The volumes of the two tanks are in the ratio 2:5. If the volume of the first tank is 2600
litres, find the total volume of two tanks.

b) After a rough calculations Mwajombe revealed that each bag of maize costs
Tsh .45 000 as the costs of production and transporting a bag from farm to the market. As
a marketing officer, help him to set a price for his products that will make him get the
profit of 25% per bag. How much money will he get if he has 24 bags of maize.

8. a) With examples write types of relations which are not functions.

b) A linear function is such that 𝑓 2 = 11, 𝑓 −3 . Find that linear function and hence
evaluate the value of 𝑓 4

9. a) In ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶, 𝐵𝐴𝐶 = 90°, 𝐴𝐵 = 𝑦𝑐𝑚, 𝐴𝐶 = 2𝑦 + 2 𝑐𝑚 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵𝐶 = 3𝑦 − 2 𝑐𝑚.Find


the value of y.

b) Two students are sitting on opposite sides of a tree of 10cm long. The angles of
elevation of the top of the tree to the students are 35° 𝑎𝑛𝑑 40° respectively. Find the
distance between them.

10. a) Simplify the expression (𝑥 − 5)2 − 9𝑦 2 and hence use the result to evaluate
(1000)2 − (999)2

b) The difference between two positive numbers is 8 and their product is 105. Find the
larger number.

12. NMB bank intends to enlarge one of their square building whose vertices are A(0,0),
B(1,0) C(1,1) D(0,1) by using an enlargement factor of 4metres.As a constructor
employed by the bank to do the work, identify the new position of the building. Hence
draw both original building and new building on the same pair of axes.
