Warnings
READ AND UNDERSTAND THE MANUAL BEFORE
THE SPREADER IS PUT INTO OPERATION.

The manual contains vital information for the safety of

personnel and the correct use of the OSR45.
Bromma Group will not accept any liability for the use of
the OSR45 for any purposes outside what is described in
the manual.
DO NOT exeed the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the
OSR45. The Safe Working Load is shown on the nameplate
that is permanently affixed to the side frame of the OSR45.
If the OSR45-frame is not hanging on all four twistlocks of
the parent spreader, or if the goods connected to the twist-
locks of the OSR45-frame have less than four functional
corner castings, risk for injuries on personnel or damages
on material is unevenable.

Safety precautions
The OSR45 shall be operated and serviced only by autho-
rized personnel.

The OSR45 must only be used for the purpose for which it
is designed.
DO NOT change system settings and functions.

Perform a functional test after any maintenance or repair

work.
Stay clear of the OSR45 when in operation.

DO NOT unlock the spreader or OSR45 while a container

is suspended in the air. It could cause personnel injury or
property damage.
Inspect the OSR45 for damage daily.

Care must be taken when performing any maintenance on

the OSR45. It must be carried out under extreme caution
and by personnel familiar with risks related to spreader
function and movements.
Serious injury by crushing can occur.

Bromma Manual

Contact Bromma Conquip AB before doing any repair work

on the OSR45 apart from replacing normal wear parts.

DO NOT walk or stand beneath the OSR45 during opera-

tion.
DO NOT attempt to lift a container that is not level (+/- 5°).

DO NOT crawl beneath a spreader bar for maintenance,

repair or adjustment. Never put any body extremity beneath
the OSR45 frame.
NEVER STAND BENEATH A SUSPENDED LOAD.

DO NOT attempt to restrain the movement of a container,

whether laden or empty, by hand or by tagline.
DO NOT stand between a container and any construction
that many prevent your movement to safety. A definite haz-
ard exists that could cause serious injury or death by being
crushed between the container and an obstruction (such as a
building or another container).
When not connected to a spreader the OSR45 overheight
frame must be parked in the storage fixture.
When the storage fixture is transported by fork lift with the
OSR45 overheight frame on it, the frame must be fixed to
the storage fixture by clamping straps to avoid tilting.

Bromma Manual

2. Description of the Bromma OSR45

Overheight Frame
The Bromma OSR45 is an automatic telescopic 20 to 45 foot
overheight frame, to be used together with different Bromma
or OEM parent spreaders – fixed 20 foot frame or telescopic
– in crane, reachstacker or straddle carrier for safer and faster
LOLO-handling of flats/bolsters/ISO containers or overheight
containers (with cargo extending up to 1.8, 2.25, or 2.7 m above
the corner pockets depending on the OSR45 version).

The OSR45 Overheight Frame is attached under any parent

spreader with ISO standard base measure and equipped with
overheight frame lifting lugs. The cargo is lifted by the twist-
locks of the spreader, the overheight frame twistlocks act as
“extended legs” to the spreader. This means a much faster
Overheight frame and safer handling of goods than with chains.

As the spreader telescopes, the overheight frame telescopes

simultaneously, allowing the unit to handle 20, 30, 40 and 45
foot containers with overheight cargo.

The OSR45 Overheight Frame is only mechanically operated

and requires no power supply or hydraulics, neither for at-
Storage fixture
taching nor operation.

The OSR45 can be delivered in a standard 20 foot container

for easy on-site mounting, thus reducing transportation costs.

The Bromma OSR45 Overheight Frame has two short side

Fork lift attachment
profiles and one telescopic 20 to 45 foot beam that are bolted
together. The telescoping runs on glide plates and follows the
spreader telescoping. The overheight frame can be connected
to any parent spreader with ISO standard base measures, in-
dependent of twistlock rotation directions. The spreader must
be equipped with lifting lugs (can be ordered separately).

The overheight frame is stored on a storage fixture when

not used. The storage fixture can be placed on the ground
or mounted on the crane legs. It can also be transported by
a fork lift truck. At the bottom it is equipped with holes for
twistlocks / conlocks identical to a 20 foot container.

Twistlock
The overheight frame twistlock acts as an extension of the
spreader twistlock. Both spreader and overheight frame twist-
locks unlock and lock simultaneously.

Each twistlock incorporates a landing pin with a mechani-

cal interlock to prohibit unlock operation when under load,
similar to the Bromma spreaders. The twistlock pins are proof
load tested to 37 tonnes.

To pick up the OSR 45 from the storage fixture, land the
spreader on the OSR 45. When the spreader twistlocks are
locked and unlocked, the latches on the OSR 45 will lock
onto the spreader lugs. At the same time a plunger will
protrude into a hole in the OSR 45 legs. This plunger will
prevent the latches from opening, while handling cargo. Be
sure the plungers are in locked position while handling cargo.

When the twistlocks are in unlocked position, the overheight

frame is held onto the spreader by the latches connected to
the lugs on the spreader.

When the twistlocks are in locked position the overheight

frame is held to the spreader by the twistlocks. The latches
are still locked, but there is a clearance between the latch and

To release the OSR 45 from the spreader, it has to land on the

storage fixture. When landing on the storage fixture, a spring
loaded pin will push up the push rod in the rod assembly and
unlock the plunger. The spring loaded pin will continue to
push up the rod assembly and release the latches. When this
is done, the spreader can leave without the OSR 45.

Lubricants, general recommendations

Specif c recommendations of brand and grade of all lubri-
cants are only examples due to regional availability, operat-
ing conditions and the continual development of improved
products. Where questions arise, refer to the manufacturer’s
specif cations and a reliable supplier.
Grease
Lubricating grease of the proper consistency is to be applied
at frequent intervals with grease guns through the grease f t-
tings or with brush where applicable. Lithium base NLGI #2
is recommended.(Example Matrix EP2)

The grease can be ordered from Bromma e-commerce site

(see chapter 7.1 How to order spare parts).

Lubrication points
● Lubricate the points shown below at intervals described in
Chapter 6.1 Periodic maintenance procedures.

bottom sides of the telescoping beams.

6.1.3 Tightening torques

The tightening torques in the following table are recommen-
dations when tightening bolts and nuts.

When torquing using a machine, for example, bolt runner, the

tightening torque should be reduced by approx. 5%.

For mild surfaces (lower hardness than 200 HB), use washer
under both bolt head and nut. As an alternative, f ange bolt or
f ange nut can be used.

Tighten to the prescribed torque without stopping.

Recommended tightening torque varies depending on surface

treatment. Certain combinations of bolt and nut require lubri-
cation according to the table below.

Surface treatment
State Bolt Nut Lubriation
1 untreated untreated oil
2 bright galvanised untreated or bright dry or oil

6.5 Fault Finding

By means of this list it is possible to identify and remedy the
most common failures on the equipment.

Always start with a visual inspection of visible damage.

To be able to lift the OSR 45 with the spreader the latching

hooks must be engaged. Make a lock/unlock with the twist-
lock, if that isn’t possible the hooks must be engaged manu-
ally.

Note!
*) To be able to remove the spreader the hooks that have
engaged they may be disengaged manually. To do this, the
lid for the plunge that locks the hook push rod must be
removed, then pull out the plunge and manually disengage
the hook.
