Notes 2: Common Laboratory Apparatus

1. Test tube - a thin, cylindrical glass container used to hold and mix small amounts of liquids. They
are commonly used for experiments and observations.

2. Beaker - is a cylindrical container with a flat bottom, used to hold and mix liquids, as well as
perform chemical reactions.

3. Graduated cylinder - is a tall, narrow container used for measuring the volume of liquids.

4. Bunsen burner - is a gas burner used for heating and sterilizing in the laboratory.

5. Tripod - A tripod stand is a three-legged stand used to support equipment such as beakers and
flasks.

6. Wire gauze - is a mesh screen used to support flasks and beakers during heating.

7. Dropper - is a small glass or plastic tube used for transferring small amounts of liquid.

8. Test tube holder - is a tool used for holding and transporting test tubes.

9. Watch glass - is a small, concave glass dish used to hold small amounts of materials.

10. Stirring rod - is a long, thin rod used for stirring solutions and suspensions.

11. Thermometer - is an instrument used to measure temperature.

12. Test tube rack - is a rack used to hold test tubes during experiments.

13. Tongs - are tools used for grasping and handling hot materials.

14. Funnel - is an apparatus with a wide mouth and narrow stem used to transfer liquids or small solid
