PREPARE PLUMBING
MATERIALS & TOOLS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students must able to:
 Recall plumbing materials and tools and their uses;
 Distinguish the tools according to their uses, and;
 Appreciate the importance of plumbing in our lives.

7
PLUMBING?
• Plumbing the word derives from the plumbum, as the first
effective pipes used in the roman era were lead pipes. Plumbum
is the latinword for lead.
• The system of pipes, tanks, fittings, and other apparatus required
for the water supply, heating and sanitation in a building is called
plumbing.
• Plumbing system comprise the entire system of piping fixtures and
appliances etc. use for water supply and drainages.
• A PLUMBERis a tradesperson who specializes in installing and
maintaining systems used for potable (drinking) water, sewage
and drainage in plumbing systems.
8
PLUMBING MATERIALS
STEEL PIPES
Pipe is a long hollow cylinder used chiefly to
convey fluid.

CHARACTERISTICS:
• Ductile
•Steel will not morph or lose its strength as
time passes.
• Steel is naturally resistant to rot.

9
COMMON TYPES OF STEEL PIPES
1. Standard Steel Pipe -used for transporting water, natural gas or steam.
2. Line Steel Pipe -are used to transport liquids and gases that are 3.
combustible.
Structural Steel Pipe -often used for drainage piping
4. Plumbing Tubes -used to move potable water or waterborne waste
removal.

10
DIFFERENT
TYPES OF PIPES
IMAGE NAME DESCRIPTION
Refers to Poly Vinyl Chloride Plastic material. This is the most
common pipe for plumbing system.
PVC PIPE

Refers to Polyethylene Plastic material intended for long span

water system installation.
PE PIPE

Refers to Cast Iron. It is a heavy metal made of casting on

molds to make fixtures. such as sink, tubs and lavatories,
CI PIPE covered with a porcelain enamel coating.

A galvanized iron pipe which is better fitted for plumbing

installation than steel pipe. It is constructed of rough iron,
GI PIPE dipped in molten zinc and maybe identified by its dull grayish
color.
12
IMAGE NAME DESCRIPTION

Is an adhesive material usually used externally. the

solventssoften and dissolve the top layer of the pipe and
SOLVENT fitting material, loosening its molecular structure. A taper in
the fitting socket creates an interference fit that ensures
contact between the pipe and fitting.
Is specifically used for attachment threaded pipe on
TEFLON fittings. A taper in the fitting socket creates an interference
TAPE fit that ensures contact between the pipe and fitting.

ABS Is an adhesive material used by a plumbean when working

CLEANER with ABS pipes.
AND
CEMENT
Are made in different forms that are intended for plumbing
joints and connections.
FITTINGS
13
IMAGE NAME DESCRIPTION

Is a point of installation system where flow of water or gas

could be manipulated. A faucet is a devicefor delivering
FAUCET
water from a plumbing system.

Refers to Manufacturer’s Standardization Society. The

MSS primary function of MSS isto provide its members the
means to develop engineering standard practices for the
use and benefit of the industry and users of its products.
Is a short length of pipe installed between couplings or
NIPPLE other fittings. Is used for connecting two other female
threaded fittings or pipes. It is one of the most popular
categories of pipe fittings.
Adaptersare an extremely important pipe fitting that extend or
terminate pipe runs. They are used to connect dissimilar
ADAPTOR pipes. It is also used in pipe systemsto connect straight
/ADAPTER sections of pipe or tube, adapt to different sizes or shapes,
and for other purposes such as regulating (or measuring) fluid
14
flow.
RECAP
1. What is the difference of
plumbing to plumbers?
2. What are the 4 common types
of Steel Pipes?
3 . There are different types of steel pipes
what pipe is the most common pipe for
plumbing system?
PLUMBING MATERIALS
FITTINGS
Are any pipe part used to join two
sections of pipes.

CHARACTERISTICS:
Stainless steel pipe fittings is an alloy
based on iron, which combines
together the mechanical properties of
steels and some specific features of
corrosion resistance. These alloys are
also liable to tarnish.
15
COMMON TYPES OF FITTINGS
1. Copper Supply

2. Galvanized Supply

3. Plastic Supply

16
PLUMBING MATERIALS
PLUMBING FIXTURES
• Is an exchangeable device which can
be connected to an existing plumbing
system to deliver and drain away
water but which is also configured to
enable a particular use.
• Each of these plumbing fixtures has
one or more water outlets and a
drain. In some cases, the drain has a
device that can be manipulated to
block the drain to fill the basin of the
fixture. 17
DIFFERENT
TYPES OF PIPES
PLUMBING TOOLS
MEASURING TOOLS
• The activity of obtaining and comparing physical quantities of real-
world objects and events. Established standard objects and
events are used as units, and the process of measurement gives
a number relating the item under study and the referenced unit of
measurement.
• Examples:L-Square/Steel Square, Try Square and Push-Pull
Rule

18
EXAMPLE OF MEASURING TOOLS AND ITS USE(S)
1. L-Square/Steel Square-It can also be used
for measuring lengths and for calculating
angles.

2. Try Square –Used for making and

measuring a piece of wood or pipe and for
keeping things square.

3. Push-Pull Rule -is used formeasuring the

exact distances of pipe fittings and fixturein the
plumbing system in doing the final lay out. It is
used in measuring the length of the pipes
before cutting. 19
PLUMBING TOOLS
CUTTING TOOLS
• Is any tool that is used to remove material from the work piece by
means of shear deformation. Cutting may be accomplished by
single-point or multipoint tools. Single-point tools are used in
turning, shaping, plaining and similar operations, and remove
material by means of one cutting edge. Milling and drilling tools
are often multipoint tools. Grinding tools are also multipoint tools.
• Some examples are: Hack saw, cross cut saw, pipe cutter and
pipe threader.

20
EXAMPLE OF CUTTING TOOLS AND ITS USE(S)

1. Hacksaw -areused by plumbers to cut

pipes and occasionally by electricians to cut
conduit.

2. Cross Cut Saw –are used in cutting plastic

pipes.

3. Pipe Cutter -are usedto cut pipes made

from copper, brass, plastic and thin-walled
electrical metal tubing (EMT). Unlike a saw, this
tool makes a clean uniformed cut using a sharp
metal wheel. 21
PLUMBING TOOLS
BORING TOOLS
•Boring is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been
drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool, for
example as in boring a cannon barrel. Boring is used to achieve
greater accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut
a tapered hole.
•Some examples are: Hammer drill, electrical drill and auger brace
with bits

22
EXAMPLE OF BORING TOOLS AND ITS USE(S)

1. Hammer Drill -used for drilling holes into

concrete and masonryto install brackets to
hold up water and waste pipes.

2. Electrical Drill –used for drilling holes into

concrete and masonry to install brackets to
hold up water and waste pipes

3. Auger Brace with Bits –used for drilling

holes in wood.
23
PLUMBING TOOLS
TESTING TOOLS
•Used in finding out how well the finished work.
•Some examples are: Spirit Level, Plumb Bob and Horse Level

24
EXAMPLE OF TESTING TOOLS AND ITS USE(S)

1. Spirit Level -is a tool used to indicate how

parallel (level) or perpendicular (plumb)a surface is
relative to the earth. A spirit level gets its name from
the mineral spirit solution inside the levels.
2. Plumbing Bob -or plummet, is a weight, usually
with a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a
string and used as a vertical reference line, or
plumb-line. It isa precursor to the spirit level and
used to establish a vertical datum.

3. Horse Level

25
PLUMBING TOOLS
DRIVING TOOLS
•Driving tools help hand tools and power tools work together,
especially important for the variety of drilling tasks that get done in
woodworking.
•Some examples are: Sledge Hammer, Crow Bar, Screw Driver

26
EXAMPLE OF DRIVING TOOLS AND ITS USE(S)

1. Sledge Hammer -These types of hammers

deliver a mighty blow, designedfor breaking
stone and demolition work.

2. Crow Bar -arehand tools used to pull two

objects apart.

3. Screw Driver -This tool is often used by

plumbersto fit the screws.
27
PLUMBING TOOLS
HOLDING TOOLS
•Tool for holding firmly any material that has to be cut.
•Some examples are: Adjustable Wrench, Clamp, Pipe Vise

28
EXAMPLE OF HOLDING TOOLS AND ITS USE(S)
1. Adjustable Wrench -is arequired tool for
working on supply lines, compression fittings, and
other plumbing parts that come equipped with hex-
shaped nuts. It's vital that your plumber's adjustable
wrench is able to hold a firm setting, so that it won't
become loose under heavy torque.

2. Pipe Clamp -Pipe clamps are widely

usedfor supporting suspended pipes.

3. Pipe Vise -hold pipes or tubing secure

while they're cut or threaded. They can hold
pipes as small as 3 mm in diameter, or as
large as 200 mm.
