Writing Linear Equations

Lesson
from Standard Form to
10 Slope – Intercept Form and
Vice Versa
Many relationships between two quantities exist in real life such as cost and
weight of the product, and salary and number hours of service rendered. There are a
lot of real-life experiences that you can apply using linear equation in two variables.
The activities in this material focus on writing linear equations in two variables from
standard form to slope – intercept form and vice versa.

What’s In

We will review some basic skills which you have learned last week. Can you
still recall slope? Slope is the steepness of a line can be measured by the ratio of the
change in vertical distance, 𝑦2 − 𝑦1to the change in the horizontal 𝑥2 − 𝑥1 , between
any two points on the line.

Let us try to answer the activity below.

Activity 1: What’s My Slope?

Direction: Find the slope of the line given the following.

______1. 2x + 5y = 15
______2. x + 4y = 9
______3. (3, -1) and (-2, 5)
______4. (2, 0) and (-4, -5)
______5.

What’s New

This module focuses on the writing linear equations in two variables from
standard form to slope – intercept form and vice versa and its uses in real life. Linear
equations in two variables can be expressed in standard form and slope-intercept
1
form. The equation y = 4x – 8 is in slope-intercept form while 2x + 5y = 15 and x +
2
4y = 9 are in standard form.

Activity 2: Let’s order pizza!

Jhenesse was craving for pizza as she rewarded herself for a job well done. She
went to TIA NINA, a pizza parlor in General Santos City. She paid Php250 for the
regular pizza and Php 5 for each additional slice of meat toppings. At the end, she
paid Php 340 for her pizza. How many slices of meat topping were added to it?

Questions:
1. What is the linear equation that will represent the cost to be paid for:
a. regular pizza? _______________________________________
b. with toppings? _______________________________________

What is It

A linear equation is an equation in two variables which can be written in two

forms:

Standard form:
Ax + By = C where A, B and C ∈ℜ, A ≠ 0 and B ≠ 0

Slope-Intercept form:
y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept, m and b ∈ℜ, and
m ≠ 0.

A. Translating slope-intercept form to standard form.

Example 1. Rewrite 𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 250 into standard form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐,

𝑦 = 5𝑥 + 250
−5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 5𝑥 − 5𝑥 + 250 Add −5𝑥 to both sides of the equation
(Addition Property of Equality)
−5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 250 Arrange and Simplify
-1(−5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 250) Since the leading coefficient cannot be negative, thus,
we will multiply/divide all terms by -1 to make it

positive.
𝟓𝒙 − 𝒚 = −𝟐𝟓𝟎 Since this is already in the form ax + by = c
Thus, this is the Final answer.

Here is another example for better understanding.

Fill in the blanks with the correct data.

Example 2: Rewrite 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 2 into standard form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐
3
1
𝑦= 𝑥−2
3

1
3(𝑦) = ( 𝑥 − 2) 3 Multiply all the terms by 3 (LCD).
3

_______________________ Arrange and Simplify

-x + 3y = x – x – 6 Add –x to both sides.
_______________________ Arrange and simplify
−1(−𝑥 + 3𝑦) = (−6) − 1 Since the leading coefficient cannot be
negative, thus, we will multiply/divide all
terms by -1 to make it positive.
____________________ Final answer
What about if the given is in standard form and you are asked to rewrite it in slope-
intercept form, how are you going to do it?

B. Translating standard form to slope–intercept form

Example 1. Rewrite 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 in the form y = mx + b.

3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 Linear Equation

3𝑥 − 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 − 3𝑥 Add -3x to both sides of the equation.

2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 5 Arrange and Simplify

2𝑦 −3𝑥 5
= + Divide both sides of the equation with 2(coefficient of y).
2 2 2
−𝟑 𝟓
𝒚= 𝒙 + Final answer
𝟐 𝟐

Fill in the blanks with the correct data.

Here is another example for better understanding.

Rewrite −2𝑥 + 7𝑦 − 14 = 0 into slope-intercept form y = mx + b

−2𝑥 + 7𝑦 − 14 = 0 Linear Equation
−2𝑥 + 2𝑥 + 7𝑦 − 14 + 14 = 0 + 2𝑥 + 14 Add 2x and 14 to both sides of the
equation.

_________________ Arrange and Simplify

7𝑦 2𝑥 14
= + Divide both sides of the equation with 7(coefficient of y).
