1. GDP is the market value of final goods and services newly produced
within a national boundary during a fixed period of time

The period referred to here is either a quarter or a year. You may want to show your
students what some of the tables from the National Income and Expenditure Accounts
look like, or send them to the library to find the accounts in the Canadian Economic
Observer. Alternatively, you could direct your students to www.statscan.gc.ca (the
homepage for Statistics Canada) or CANSIM I (for historical data) and II (for current
data) if your institution subscribes to it. Students may also be interested in seeing what
happens in the financial markets and to public opinion on the day a new national
income and expenditure accounts release (especially the advance release) comes out.
2. Market value: allows adding together unlike items by valuing them
at their market prices
a. Problem: misses nonmarket items such as homemaking, the
value of environmental quality, and natural resource depletion
Analytical Problems 1 and 4 both discuss difficulties in
counting
nonmarket items for GDP, including the important idea that GDP
is not the same as welfare.
b. There is some adjustment to reflect the underground economy

People are often surprised to see how large inventory swings may be from quarter to
quarter. For example, in the second quarter of 2009 real inventories fell by over $7.8
billion (2007 dollars), over half the total decline in real GDP of about $14 billion in that
recession quarter.
d. Adding up value works well, since it automatically
excludes intermediate goods

Analytical Problem 2 has students see the relationship between GDP and GNP.
Data Application
While the use of GDP as a measure of production has been conventional in Canada
and Europe, prior to December 1991, the United States used GNP as its main measure
of production; after that time GDP became the main concept. The main reasons for the
switch were that GDP is more relevant to production in an open economy (though GNP
is more relevant for income), and GDP is more precise than GNP in the advance
estimate, since net factor payments are difficult to measure quickly.
d. Example: Engineering revenues for a road built by a Canadian
company in Saudi Arabia is part of Canadian GNP (built by a
Canadian factor of production), not Canadian GDP, and is part
of Saudi GDP (built in Saudi Arabia), not Saudi GNP
e. Difference between GNP and GDP is less than 2% for Canada.
6. A Closer Look 2.1: Natural resources, the environment, and the
national income accounts
(a) A good deal of Canada’s economic well-being is due to
its substantial stocks of natural resources
(b) The exploitation of natural resources produces costs that are
difficult to measure accurately
(c) In the early 1990s, Statistics Canada developed a system of
environmental and resource accounts – it provides inflation on
the
stock of natural resources, the use of those resources and the
pollutants produced by their exploitation
(d) The accounts also report the production of pollutants by industry
and by sector of the economy – these help policy makers to
focus
attention on environmental issues and to design effective
mechanisms to price natural resources appropriately

Data Application
The timeline for national income and product amount releases is generally:

Revisions occur every July for the following three years, then every fifth year for a new
benchmark release. Each new release contains either additional new data that was not
available before, or a change in seasonal factors, or a correction of errors made
previously.
B. The expenditure approach to measuring GDP
1. Measures total spending on final goods and services produced within
a nation during a specified period of time
2. Four main categories of spending: consumption (C), investment
(I), government purchases of goods and services (G), and net
exports (NX)

Note that the consumption category in the national income and expenditure accounts
does not correspond to economists’ concept of consumption, because it includes the full
value of durable goods. When economists study consumption behaviour, they must
account for this; one way to do so is to assume that durable goods provide services that
are proportional to their existing stock. Total consumption is this fraction of the stock of
consumer durables, plus nondurables and services.
c. Residential fixed investment: spending on the construction
of houses and apartment buildings
d. Machinery and equipment investment: spending on
machines, tools and vehicles
6. Government purchases of goods and services: spending by
the government on goods or services

People often don’t realize how large transfer programs are relative to federal
government purchases.
For example, in 2009 government purchases were $337.7 billion out of total
government expenditures (including the Canadian Pension Plan) of $631.3 billion.
Federal government expenditures included $72.0 billion of transfers payments to
individuals and businesses, $29.2 billion in grants to provincial and local governments,
and $28.98 billion in interest payments.

– Mit látok, Anna! hisz, szempilláidon valami olyas van, melyre rá
lehetne fogni, hogy könny.

– Csakugyan sírsz, Anna? Az Istenért, mi lelt.

Neki szoros kötelessége volna engedelmeskedni; hisz! zálogba veté

ötlet.
– Az Istenért, herczegnőm! ne beszélj ily hangosan. Meghallhatja
palotahölgyed vagy komornád!

– Igazad volt, Anna!… S jó tanácsodért megmarasztallak
udvarmesternőmnek.
– Segíts inkább, herczegnőm, unokaöcsémen, mert, lásd, az is
lemond a kamarásságról. Helyét idegen foglalja el, ki, ha ragyogóbb
tulajdonokkal bírna is, hűségben őt soha felül nem fogja múlni. Mihelyt
mellette szót emelsz, a fejedelem ő magassága bizonyosan kamarásai

– Azt megtiltom, Anna! Báthori Zsófiára hivei mindig számíthatnak.
Egész életére védelmem alá veszem Gyulait. Ah! felséges ötletem van,…

A kamarás, ki az előszobában volt, tüstént megjelent; de már a Zsófit
összeszedett arczczal találta a mennyezetes bársonyszéken, melyen az
ünnepi szertartások alatt ült. Körüle palotahölgyek állottak.
– Valamint a herczegek és uralkodók, szólt a szeszélyes leány, titkos
megbizásokat ruháznak hű alattvalóikra, s olyankor az udvari személyzet
közül senki sincs a teremben; szintúgy tulajdonítjuk mi herczegnők is
magunknak e jogot, s midőn ezennel gyakorlatba venni szándékozunk,
parancsoljuk palotahölgyeinknek, hogy vonuljanak vissza.
Az összecsengetett nők, kik lelkendezve szaladtak vala a terembe,
most csodálkozás közt távozának.
– Kamarásunk, Gyulai Ferencz vegye át tőlünk e gyöngysort, melyet
Laczkó Istvánné, született Bodó Klára asszony, mélyen tisztelt
fejedelemnénk palotahölgye, a boldogabb napokban rendkívül kedvelt, s
minden ékszereink közül a legtöbbre becsült.
Midőn Gyulai hallá Klára nevét, sápadtabbá lett, s midőn a gyöngyöt
kezében tartá, úgy tetszik, mintha alkalmatlan érzések benyomásai miatt
szenvedne.
A herczegleány folytatá: – Kamarásunk a gyöngy által éppen úgy
igazolhatja küldetését, mint szokták a többi titkos követek, uralkodójuk
pecsétgyürűjével, vagy más csalhatatlan jelekkel.
Zsófi, hogy a kellő méltóság ne szenvedjen semmi hiányt, egy
perczig szünetet tartott, s aztán emeltebb hangon szólt:
– Kamarásunk Rápoltra megérkezvén, díszruhában teendi udvarlását
a háziasszonynál, igyekszik minél megnyerőbb modorral hatni czélunk
elérésére, s nem feledi, hogy minden küldetésekben az ügyesség
próbaköve az eredmény, s a sikertelenség mindig vád, ha nem is a
szándék, de a képesség ellen.
Gyulai nem tudta, minek vélje e hosszas szónoklatot, azonban
mélyen bókolva, hallgatott.
A herczegnő folytatá:
– Kamarásunk özvegy Laczkó Istvánnénak nevünkben így szól: Elég
volt már a gyász és fájdalom, melylyel néhai férje emlékének áldozott. A
jó Isten nem akarja, hogy egyetlen érzés rabjává tegyük magunkat. Az
emlékezés mellé a feledést, a bánat mellé a vigasztalást küldi, s nem
szabad e szelid nemtőket visszautasítanunk.
Most Zsófinak a szertartásos modor iránti türelme kifogyott.
Zsebkendőjét rángatva mondá: – De tulajdonkép a férfiaknak volna
kötelességök szép eszméket gondolni ki, s nem nekünk, szegény nőknek.
Kegyelmed tehát Rápoltig csak azon törje fejét, a mi által Klárát
vigasztalhatja. A bölcs nem szorul utasításra. Akarom, hogy Klára
udvarmesternőmmé legyen. Ha önként nem jön, hozza ide csellel vagy
erővel. Eleget könnyezett már, ideje, hogy mosolyogjon is. S én nem
fogom tűrni, hogy virágzó ifjuságát epedések közt töltse. Ezt ne feledje
kegyelmed, kamarás úr, s Klára szivét ostrommal úgy fogja körül –
tudniillik az én nevemben, – s oly vitézül vívja, hogy a bánat fekete
serege, mely azt mostanig megszállva tartá, a fegyvert letévén, szabad
kivonulásért könyörögjön, mint a legyőzött várőrség szokott.
– Igen nehéz szerepet bízott fönséged rám. Életemet inkább
veszteném el, mint kegyét; de fogok-e birni azon ékesenszólással, mely a
lemondásban gyönyörködő szivet, földi vágyak felé téríthesse? Az
özvegy, úgy hallom, egészen megholt a világra nézve.
– Mit is tehetett volna mást, míg a gyászruhát hordozta? Ő nem
tartozik azon nők közé, kiknél a gyász csak az öltözék egy külön neme…

Gyulai a titkos küldetésre saját maga előtt is rejtélyes érzésekkel

Zsófia pedig az élénk képzelődés legragyogóbb színeivel rajzolgatá
minden részleteit azon új háztartásnak, melyet finom izlésű
udvarmesternője segítségével fog elrendezni.

Kassai titkárja e közben válságos időket élt. Az imént látta tulajdon

két szemével a felterjesztést, melyben védnöke őt a levéltárnoki
állomásra ajánlotta.
Máskor mint repesett volna örömében a szíve! De, fájdalom! épen
aznap reggel, kérdé tőle tréfásan egyik irnok: – Uram bátyám! vajjon
nem kegyelmed értesítette-e a megboldogult Elemér úrfit a szombatosok
gyűléséről?
És szintén aznap délben sóhajtá Kassai: – Százötven aranyat adnék, a
ki nekem fölfedezné az árulót!
Tehát ötven aranynyal van felebb fokozva az öreg úr dühe!
 Borzasztó emelkedés! S bár legalább ne volna a fiatal ember, ki
gyanakodni kezde, valóságos betűmoly és actákon rágcsáló egér? Ki
tudja, hová nem üti be az orrát? s mit nem szaglál meg?
A szerencsétlen titkár nem is kétkedett többé, hogy a végveszély
torkából csak nagy elhatározás által menekülhet.
Kassai egy egész nap nem látta őt, sem az iró-, sem az ebédlő-
asztalnál.
Kérdezősködött felőle, szüksége volt rá; de nem kapták otthon, a
hivatalban, a korcsmákban.
Másnap reggel Kassai István, országtanácsos és itélőmester,
díszruhába volt öltözve, s épen templomba készült, a kihirdetés miatt.
Képe elégült vala. Andrásfalvát már zsebében hitte, s mi kedélyét
kedves derűvel és meleggel tölté be, azon tapasztalat vala, hogy ifjabb
Rákóczi Györgygyel is, okkal-móddal, ki tudna jönni, s így hivatalát és
politikai befolyását semmi esetleg nem fenyegeti.
Kassai épen fölkelt a karszékből, s a mankó helyett épen elefántcsont
pálczáját vette kezébe, midőn nem is derült, nem is zavartalan arczczal
belépett a titkár.
– Domine frater! kendet rég nem láttam: szólt Kassai, szokása
ellenére, harag nélkül.
– Nagyságos uram! ez irat fogalmazása rabolta el minden időmet.
Ekkor egy kérvényt nyujta a korlátnok felé.
– Megint sürgeti előléptetését!
– Isten őrizzen, nagyságos uram! – hebegé a titkár.
– Mi baja van hát?
– Lemondásomat kérem kegyesen kieszközöltetni.
– Kassai csodálkozása fölülmulta a titkár rettegését is.
– Hát miért mondunk le, domine frater?
– Magam részéről csak azért, mert más kenyeret kaptam – szólt
elégületlenül a titkár.
 – Zabkenyeret-e vagy mazsolás kalácsot? kérdé rossz humorral
Kassai, s eszébe jutottak a torzsalkodó pártok, a cselszövő nagy urak, a
megvesztegetés, a följelentések és árulás, minden más bűn lehetőségeivel
együtt… S kihez szegődött kend? kérdé epés mosolylyal. Talán épen
Szeredi uramhoz?
– A nagysád ellenségeinél szolgálni, oly gazság volna tőlem, – szólt
a titkár mély felindulással, – a minőre talán a világtörténetben sincs
példa. Én Széles Márton úr szolgálatjába fogok lépni.
– De hát, ki az a Széles Márton?
– Nógrád-megyében compossessor, kegyelmes uram!
– S kend fejedelmünk országából ki akar költözni?
– Állhatatos szándékom.
– És mit fog tenni Széles Mártonnál?
– Részint számtartói hivatalt viszek, részint az urfiakat tanítom.
– Kend vagy leitta eszét, vagy engem akar ámítani. Hisz! talán csak
nem bolondult meg, hogy diszes állását ily silány helyzettel fölcserélje.
– Nem a helyzet teszi az embert, nagyságos uram! s alázatosan
esdeklem, kegyeskedjék elbocsáttatásomat sürgetni, mert egy más jelölt
is van, ki még a lovak idomítására is ajánlja magát, és Széles Márton
uramnak, mint hallám, gyönge oldala a ló.
– Pihend ki csak magad, jó emberem, nem aludtál az éjjel,
lemondásodról majd beszélünk máskor – szólt Kassai, a titkárt ittasnak
hivén.
– Ne máskor beszéljünk, nagyságos uram. Méltóztassék csak átvenni
a kérelmet. Ide leteszem az asztalra.
– Jól van, tedd le!
– Nem «tedd le», nagyságos uram! hanem méltóztassék kegyesen
nem neheztelni rám, ha a kényszerűségnek engedve, még felmentetésem
előtt Széles Márton uramhoz találnék utazni; mert vetélytársam van s az
a lovak neveléséhez is értvén, a pædagogusi állomást könnyen elcsipheti
előlem.
 – No! ne fecsegj már többet. Feküdjél le s ha kialudtad magadat,
mehetsz Széles Márton uramhoz… Látják kendtek, szólt oktatólag
Kassai az irnokokhoz, minő rossz hatásai vannak a mértéktelen italnak.
Ez az ember most az egyszer talált eltérni a józanság útjáról s mégis
mekkorát botlott. Legjobb szomjoltó a friss, tiszta víz.
A titkár alig várta, hogy védnöke a templomba menjen.
Ideiglenes távozás ürügye alatt még aznap néhány mérfölddel
távolabb volt az őt fenyegető százötven aranytól.

XVIII.

Az isteni tisztelet után a fejedelem kisebb elfogadó-termébe

összegyülekeztek a magas család tagjai s a tekintélyesebb főurak.
Midőn Báthori Zsófia herczeglány, feszes udvari öltözetben és
komoly palotahölgyektől kisérve, megjelent, az öreg Rákóczi az ajtóig
ment eléje s kart nyújtva vezeté a trón zsámolyáig, hol balra egy a
fejedelemasszonyénál valamivel törpébb ülés várt számára, míg szintén a
trón mennyezete alatt, de jobb felől, György úrfinak vala hely jelölve.
Kedélyes szónoklat után, Rákóczi a szép ara homlokát megcsókolá s
lekötelező nyájassággal buzdította, hogy fejezze ki valami óhajtását s
adjon neki alkalmat, a gyors és feltétlen betöltés által, atyai szeretetét és
lovagi buzgóságát megmutatnia.
A lány rezzenve hordá végig szemét a kis, de fényes csoportozaton.
Látszik, miként keblében küzdés foly és akarata ingadozik.
– Mit tegyek? rebegték alig hallhatón ajkai.
– A váradi kapitányságot kell kérni – sugá oly finom és halk hangon
Kassai, hogy Zsófi előbb kétkedett: vajon, nem csak képzelődésének
játéka-e a mit hallani vél s ámult és kémlő tekintetet vetett az öreg
korlátnokra, ki most egy alig észrevehető fejbólintással bátorítá
szónoklatra a szép herczegkisasszonyt.
E tény véget vetett a habozásnak.
Zsófi ajkszögletein negédes gúny és fanyar mosoly lebbent el.
 – Minthogy, szólt Rákóczihoz fordulva, minthogy én minden
vágyamat fenségednek fejedelmi házában annyira kielégítve találom,
hogy semmi személyes óhajtani valóm nem marad fenn, legyen szabad
nem drága érczeket, keleti szöveteket, elefántcsontból és borostyánkőből
készűlt remek műveket kérni e nap emlékét fentartó jelül, legyen szabad,
minthogy rólam elegen gondoskodnak, nekem ma a más örömeire
gondolni.
– Szépen beszél – sugá Szeredi Kemény Jánosnak.
– Jól informálta György herczeg – elmélkedék magában Kassai.
– Szólj bátran, leányom! mond a fejedelem. Szivünkből örvendünk,
sőt büszkék is vagyunk rá, ha mind azt, a mit vágyaid kértek, betöltve
találtad nálunk. Mélyebb hatásuvá nem tehetted volna a mai nap emlékét,
mint épen e nyilatkozatod által. Köszönjük szíves elismerésedet s azon
leszünk, hogy az előzékenységben adósod ne maradjunk. Ohajtjuk tehát
mielőbb hallani az egyén nevét, kire gondoltál s a kivánságot, melylyel
neki örömet szerzeni akarsz.
 – Legyen szabad nekem ma a más örömére gondolni.

Zsófi mosolyogva, de a szeméremtől, vagy az átallás más indokai

miatt, kipirult arczczal folytatá: Szándékom volt György herczeget a
váradi kapitánysággal lepni meg, azonban szivem nyugtalanul vert,
midőn e szép eszmét elmémben forgatám. Ne indulj eszed után Zsófi!
súgta szivem. Miért válnál meg a háztól, melyben annyi elnézéssel,
szeretettel találkozál és azon jó emberektől, kik leányukká fogadtak s kik
bizonyosan sajnálnák távozásodat? Miért okoznál egy örömnapon
kellemetlenséget nekik. Aztán ne feledd Zsófi! súgta ismét szivem, hogy
Váradon vetélytársad akadna s György birtoka fölött osztozni kellene
mással…
– Mit mondasz, herczegnőm! kiáltá György.
 – Igen, Váradon szivednek felét a tevékenység, a dicsvágy foglalná
el, s mi menyasszonyok féltékenyek vagyunk az ily vetélytársakra is.
Később változnak szokásaink. Majd akkor sürgetni fogom számodra a
váradi kapitányságot.
Rákóczi elnevette magát. – Nem szeretném, leányom, ha valaha ez
állomásért folyamodnál fiam számára. Egyébiránt, tevé komolyan hozzá:
még eddig példa nem volt rá, hogy legfontosabb végvárunk más, mint
tapasztalt kezekre bizatott volna.
Helyeslés sugárzott az országnagyok szemeiből.
Csak Kassai volt komor, sötét és gondolatokba merűlt.
– Nos! mit kivánsz hát, kedves leányom! kérdé a fejedelem.
– Az andrásfalvi uradalmat, mely Pécsi Simon nótáján esett vissza az
államra, Gyulai Ferencz hű szolgámnak kivánom adományoztatni, szólt,
zsebkendőjének csipkéit tépdelve a herczegnő.
– De csak oly föltétel alatt, kiáltá puzduri hévvel György úrfi, hogy
tüstént vigye oltárhoz Pécsi Deborah kisasszonyt, az elitélt egyetlen
magzatát.
Közcsodálkozás követé e szavakat.
Kassai elejté az elefántcsont gombú pálczát kezéből, s az agg kor
szokott reszketegségénél többel nyúlt utána.
Rákóczi homlokát redők fellegezték be.
Most a fejedelemné veté közbe magát s nyájas hangon mondá: –
Örvendek leányom, hogy fiatal éveidben már érzed, miként nem azért
szerencsések a magas helyzetüek, mert joguk van parancsolni, hanem,
mert alkalmuk van az érdemet megjutalmazni. Gyulai Ferencz valóban
derék fiatal ember, kitől házunk és a haza kitünő szolgálatokat várhat.
Szivemből örvendek, kedves fiam György, hogy benned, kit a világ
harczias hajlamaidért és erélyedért dicsér, oly mélyen él a szánalom a
szerencsétlenek, a kegyelem a tévedtek iránt. Óvd e szent, e nemes
érzéseket egész frisseségökben s hidd el, hogy ha a halandóknak nem
lehet néha a mértéket el nem téveszteni, sokkal jobb, ha tetteink által az
igazságos szigor, mint az irgalom szenved csorbát. Egyébiránt Pécsi
Simon háza valóban megérdemli a részvétet. S fenségedhez, folytatá
Rákócziné a férjhez fordulva, ezen örömnapon én is kéréssel járulok.
Teljesítse gyermekeink kivánságát, de egy kikötéssel. Az andrásfalvi
urodalomról szóló adománylevélben Gyulai Ferencz neve mellett
említtessék a Pécsi Deboráhé is. Birják ők egyenlő joggal a szép
uradalmat, önként értetvén, hogy Deboráht rangjához méltólag, én
fogom kiházasítani.
– A legkellemesebben vagyok meglepve, válaszolá Rákóczi, midőn
két kivánság helyett hármat kell teljesítenem, s midőn e kivánságok, bár
külön nem valának rám nézve megnyugtatók, együtt a legtökéletesebben
összhangzanak óhajtásaimmal. Csak egyet kötök ki, hogy Deborah
kisasszony kezét én kérjem meg Gyulai számára, önként értetvén, miként
egyedül én fogok arról gondoskodni, a mi csak fiatal kamarásunk
háztartására az ő részéről szükségeltetnék.
Ezzel fölkelvén trónjáról, megcsókolta neje arczát s aztán fiának és
szép menyének homlokát.
A főurak lelkesedése harsány éljenben tört ki.
Kassai arcza hamusötétté lőn.
– Hű országnagyjaim! szólt most a fejedelem emelt hangon. Biztató
előjelnek veszem, hogy családom örömnapja hajnalán érkezett hozzám
azon fontos tudósítás Stambulból, melyben védurunk, a szultán,
lemondott a magyarországi evangelikus rendek sérelmeinek orvoslásáért
indítandó hadviselet ellenzéséről. Segédét nem ajánlja ugyan fel, de jó
kivánságával kiséri vállalatunkat. S nekünk egyébre szükségünk sem
volt. A hit és lelkiismeret szabadságának zászlóját ezennel kezembe
ragadom tehát. Keljen fel az ország, üljetek mindnyájan lóra. Hat hét
mulva ötvenezered magunkkal leszünk Morva és Szilézia határánál!
– Én, fenséges uraim! szólt a dühtől reszkető Kassai, én nem tudok
lovagolni s minthogy ezentúl a politikát csak lóhátról fogják intézni,
alázatosan esdeklem a hivatalomtól föloldoztatásért.
– Teljesítjük uraságod alázatos kérését, biztosítván ezentúlra is
kegyelmünk iránt, – válaszolá hideg, kimért hangon Rákóczi.
– Örömmel teszem lelkemet kezeid közé mennybeli atyám, mert e
dicső napot megérnem engedted! szólt könnybe lábbadó szemekkel
Dajka, a püspök.
 Harsány és szünni nem akaró éljenzés közt távozott a hadpárt.
Kassai nem soká élte túl e rettenetes perczet.

XIX.

Rápoltról a herczegnő kamarása később tért vissza, mint várták.

Még ott meghallhatá, hogy nagy uradalma és szép arája van. Még ott
értesűlhete Zsófia herczegnő rendkívüli kegyéről és sejtheté, hogy
emelkedése már csak a Rákóczi-család iránti hűségétől függ s hogy
becsvágyának minden álmai valósúlnak, ha a hálát választja
vezércsillagul és a legnagyobb befolyást, eszmék helyett, feltétlen
ragaszkodás által akarja kivívni.
Minő érzések ostromlák keblét? az a világ előtt titok maradt.
A kik vele megérkezésekor mindjárt találkoztak, búskomolynak
vélték.
A herczegnő nyugtalanúl várta s nehezteléssel fogadá.
– Nem azért küldöttem kegyelmedet Rápoltra, szólt élénken,
majdnem hevesen, hogy tagadó választ hozzon. Ezt mások is
megtehették volna. Én öntől a nehezet, a rendkívülit vártam. Szükségem
van Klárára s most szokjam-e meg, hogy kivánságaim rendre
meghiusuljanak?
– Az a nő, kit fenséged ismert, nem él többé. Találtam Rápolton egy
özvegyet, ki betegeket gyógyított, alamizsnát osztott, gyermekeit tanítá,
szőrruhát hordot s a kit a vidék őrangyalának neveznek. Találtam egy
tiszta kis épületet, mely az egyszerűség, a lemondás és a magát feláldozó
erény jeleivel volt csak fölékítve, találtam egy sírt, mely azzal a joggal
birt, hogy virágait az ég cseppjein kivül a fájdalom harmatja is folyvást
üdítse. A szomorúfűzek közül, a kórágy mellől, vagy a gyermekszobából
hozzak-e fenségednek udvarmesternőt? Herczegnőm! Laczkó Istvánné
külön világot teremtett magának, melynek kötelességeit, szokásait,
örömeit, elégtételeit csak azok tudják egészen fölfogni, kik oly jók voltak
mint ő és oly szerencsétlenek.
 – Ah! nekem egészen más tervem volt vele! sóhajtá Zsófi. E bánat, e
visszavonultság alá fogja ásni egészségét, s tán már el is rabolta arczának
szinét.
– Nem hittem volna, ha nem látom őt, hogy a bú annyi igézettel
birhasson.
– És még mindig oly szép mint egykor? tudakolta a herczegnő.
– Talán kevésbbé szép, de sokkal vonzóbb, szólt Gyulai rosszul
leplezett megindulással.
– Egészen más tervem volt Klárával – ismétlé a herczegleány. De
úgy-e Pécsi Deborah…?
– Jegyesem! szakítá félbe a herczeglány kérdését Gyulai,
megrettenve azon szavaktól, melyek Báthori Zsófia ajkán rebegtek.
