Sciatica
Sciatica
Pain that is felt anywhere between the lower part of your ribs to the lower part of your backside is
considered lower back pain. Thus, the area in between the last rib or the last vertebrae of the thoracic
segment(T12) and the first sacral vertebrae (S1).
There are two types: Sciatica (called lumbosacral radiculopathy) and non-sciatica. The sciatica nerve runs
from your lower back through your buttocks and down your legs.
Sciatica pain is often described as a sudden, hot pain that shoots down the buttocks and leg. Sciatica can
be caused by a number of conditions that put pressure on the sciatica nerve.
Non-sciatica pain is mostly in your back and not felt in the legs.
Lower back pain can also be caused by arthritis, over-exertion, and trauma.
Back pain usually improves on its own in about 4 weeks. If you are experiencing significant pain, or your
pain isn’t getting better, contact your doctor.
SCIATICA SYMPTOMS:
Sciatica pain typically feels like a sharp, electric-like pain that starts in your lower back and travels
through the buttocks and down one leg.
NON-SCIATICA SYMPTOMS:
Non-sciatica pain is felt within the lower back area. The pain can be dull, achy, sharp, or burning.

Managing pain associated with low back is an important part of making the individual active as much as
possible.
There are established ways Physiotherapy can help you manage your low back pains not limited to
exercise prescription. The use of modalities such as cold and heat packs, Infrared radiation, shortwave
diathermy, TENS and EMS is helpful in managing your pains and realign the normal anatomy and back
to normal functions.
Clinically, it is always safer to use cold therapy for acute pains and heat therapy for chronic pains.
Usually, acute pains have lasted for about few days to few weeks whilst Chronic Pains have lasted more
than 3 months to years.
Exercises are also helpful in pain management. When you perform an exercise,the body releases natural
