MAGNUM SR35 drifting
system sets the pace
Secret lies in unique conical thread
The trend towards more powerful
hydraulic rigs and longer rounds in
drifting and tunnelling has led to the
design of new drillstrings which can
cope with the extra pace and strain.
However, instead of just increasing
rod and bit diameters, Secoroc has
created the MAGNUM SR.

material at the thread end to prevent
breakage and less tendency for devia-
tion when collaring.
The bits are easy to uncouple, leading
to faster changes and more holes drilled,
and the drillstring receives fewer damag-
ing shockwaves.
The MAGNUM SR drifting system
starts with the SR35, which has a compre-
hensive selection of equipment including
hexagonal 35 mm and round 39 mm rods
in conventional and MF designs.
The rods range from 3.1 to 6.1 metres
long. The SR35 FOCUS button bits are
from 43 mm up to 64 mm and the ream-
ing equipment is comprised of pilot
adapters and reaming bits as well as the
new Dome bits.
When accuracy and straightness are paramount:
The combination of the 39 mm round rod together
with the SR35 guide bit is unbeatable.
The inside story: More material at the
end of the conical thread prevents break-
age and reduces the tendency for devia-
tion when collaring.
Extensive field tests
Extensive field tests with the MAGNUM
SR have been carried out on four conti-
nents and involved more than half a mil-
lion metres of drilling.
Performed in both mining and tun-
nelling applications, the tests showed
that the Magnum SR system
● increased service life by 25–50
percent on the drifter rods
● gave better service life of the bits
● created very high operator acceptance
due to easy uncoupling of the drill bits
● resulted in higher drilling productivity,
thanks to easy collaring, straighter
holes and better equipment availability
