WEATHER

DISTURBANCES
Learning Objectives:
•Identify the weather
disturbances.
•Compare and contrast a
tornado and a thunderstorm.
•Tropical cyclones, also known as
typhoons or hurricanes, are among
the most destructive weather
phenomena.
•They are intense circular storms that
originate over warm tropical oceans,
and have maximum sustained wind
speeds exceeding 119 kilometers per
hour and heavy rains.
Tropical cyclones are referred to by
different names depending on
where they originate in the world.
• Hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean
and the eastern north Pacific Ocean.
• Typhoons occur in the western Pacific
Ocean.
• Tropical cyclones occur in the south
Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.
•From 1998-2017, storms, including tropical
cyclones and hurricanes, were second only
to earthquakes in terms of fatalities, killing
233 000 people.
•During this time, storms also affected an
estimated 726 million people worldwide,
meaning they were injured, made
homeless, displaced or evacuated during
the emergency phase of the disaster.
Typhoon Haiyan, known in the
Philippines as Super Typhoon
Yolanda, was one of the most
powerful tropical cyclones ever
recorded.
On making landfall, Haiyan
devastated portions of Southeast
Asia, particularly
the Philippines. It is one of the
deadliest Philippine typhoons on
record, killing at least 6,300
people in that country alone.
Conditions needed to form a
Hurricane
• There must be a continuous supply of
rising moist air.
•There must be an abundance of warm
seawater to continuously feed the rising air
with moisture.
•The temperature should be about 80
degrees Fahrenheit or 27 degrees Celsius.
Points to remember:
1. World Meteorological Organization –
developed a system that gives names to the
hurricanes.
2. 1953 – female names were used exclusively
3. 1963 – the Weather Bureau started giving
Filipino women’s nicknames on typhoons
occurring within the PAR (Philippine Area
of Responsibility)
PHILIPPINE AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY
Advantages of using Philippine
names for typhoons:
1. The Filipino names are more easily recognizable
to most of the people, especially in rural areas.
2. It signifies the presence of the disturbance within
the PAR and that will likely affect the country
instead of another place.
3. The old Filipino alphabet has 19 characters and
this is equivalent to the annual average number of
tropical cyclones occurring in the PAR.
“Odette”, considered this
2021’s strongest typhoon,
made landfall in Siargao on
December 16, devastating the
lives of thousands of the
island's residents.
(International name: RAI)
Points to remember:
1. PAGASA – monitors all depressions,
storms, and typhoons spotted within the
PAR.
2. Weather forecasters – gather and analyze
and interpret the atmospheric conditions.
3. They use weather instruments: air
thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, and
hygrometer.
Points to remember:
1. RADAR (Radio detection and ranging)
– device used for weather forecasting;
can detect presence of typhoons
2. Weather satellites – carry cameras
which take photographs of the cloud
over the area.

•Thunderstorm, a
violent short-
lived weather disturb
ance that is almost
always associated
with lightning, thun
der, dense clouds,
heavy rain or hail,
and strong
gusty winds.
