Bolt connection at connection A was designed as a double angle connection as shown in figure ____.

The figure on the right depicts a typical beam to beam connection used as reference for the analysis.
Initially it was decided to use the M24 bolt. Although the design did not fail when using this bolt, to
be more efficient M16 was also used for the system. Using four M16 bolts of Grade 8.8 it was found
that they would most likely fail by bearing. Thus this bolt was eliminated and the next design was
using 3 bolts of the M20, Grade 8.8 bolt. The calculations for these are included below. The shear
force of 450 kN was used for the analysis after applying the SLS factors for a live load of 300 kN.
Eventually, Grade 8.8, M20 bolts of Grade 300 steel with the plate dimensions of 102 x 102 x 6.5
ANGLE x 280 LONG, were finalised for this bolt connections.

Position A was checked for shear strength of the bolts and the ply bearing. This check was successful
as the total shear capacity was found to be 555.6 kN and is bigger than the overall shear force of 450
kN. Following this, the bearing capacity was also calculated to be 164.74 kN which was also smaller
than the shear distribution on each of the bolt (450/3 = 150 kN).

Position B was checked for the shear in the plate and it was found to be within the shear limit of
225kN per plate.

Finally, the bending in the plates with a total of two plates resisting the moment were checked. The
design moment is 26.33 kNm, drastically smaller than the section capacity of the beam ( ∅ M) of
73 kNm.

The 3 bolts on the right plate attached to the column were checked as they are critical. If they are
compatible, then the bolts on beam B1 would also be safe. The bolts attached to the column are
under out-of-plane loading. Theoretically, it is possible to conduct these checks but given the
bending moment is very small due to the “e” value being only 65mm, thus the out-of-plane checks
were not considered.

What I learnt from this report:

I learnt how to analyse bolt connections and welded connections. Through the method of trial and
error, connections for this structure were determined. The bolts and the plates were analysed to
check against shear strength and bearing capacity to ensure no modes of failure.
