The Rainbow Fish

Rainbow Fish: What a beautiful sea! And my sparkling silver, blue, green, and purple scales
make it even more beautiful!

Fish One: Come on, Rainbow Fish! Come and play with us!
(sound of swishing)

Fish Two: Why did he just glide past us without even answering?

Little Blue Fish: Rainbow Fish, wait for me! Please give me one of your shiny scales. They
are so wonderful, and you have so many.

Rainbow Fish: You want me to give you one of my special scales? Who do you think you
are? Get away from me!

Little Blue Fish: Oh! (sound of swishing) Hey friends! Do you know what just happened? I
asked Rainbow fish for only one of his scales, and he said, “Who do you think you are? Get
away from me!”

Fish One: If that’s how he wants to be, let’s not have anything to do with him. If he swims
by, we’ll turn away.

Fish Two: Ok, we don’t have to be nice if he doesn’t want any friends!

Rainbow Fish: I keep swimming by and no one is admiring my scales. What good are they
if no one notices how beautiful they are? Sigh, I feel like the only fish in the ocean. Maybe
the starfish will have some advice. Hey starfish, I am so beautiful, why doesn’t anybody like
me?

Starfish: I can’t answer that for you. But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave you
will find the wise octopus. Maybe she can help you.
Octopus (in a deep voice): I have been waiting for you. The waves have told me your story.
This is my advice. Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish. You will no longer be the
most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy.

Rainbow Fish: I can’t! Where did you go Octopus? Oh no, I just can’t give away my
beautiful, shining scales. How could I ever be happy without them?

Little Blue Fish: Rainbow Fish, please don’t be angry. I just want one little scale.

Rainbow Fish: Well… only one very very small shimmery scale. Maybe I wouldn’t miss just
one.

Little Blue Fish: Thank you! Thank you very much! Look at me everyone! Look what
Rainbow Fish gave me! Isn’t it beautiful?

Fish One: Hey Rainbow Fish, can I have a scale, too?

Rainbow Fish: Sure! Here you go! Who else wants one?

Fish Two: I do!

Rainbow Fish: Here you go!

Fish Two: Thank you so much! I love it!

Fish Three: How about me, can I have one too?

Rainbow Fish: Of course, here you go! The more I give away the better I feel! I finally feel at
home with you other fish!

All Fish: Come on, Rainbow Fish! Come and play with us!

Rainbow Fish: Here I come!
