DOCUEMENTATIONS........................................................................... 6
Section 1 - Introduction
This document describes the procedure that will be followed for applying the pipeline's
field joints Heat Shrinkable Sleeves Application.
This procedure should be followed, except for extreme circumstances where it is deemed
impossible to continue without deviation.
The approved changes in the procedure, which were introduced during the offshore
works implementation, if any, shall be documented on site and included in the final as-
built dossier.
Section 2 - Responsibilities
1.1. Barge Superintendent
The Barge Superintendent is responsible for ensuring that the pipeline is laid in
accordance with the project specifications and approved procedure.
The Barge Site Manager is responsible for ensuring the application of all contract terms
and conditions and deal with the Company Representatives on behalf of Contractor.
The Barge Captain is responsible for all marine operations onboard the Lay Barge during
the offshore works, he is also responsible for the safety of the Lay Barge and all
associated marine spread.
Section 3- Material Handling and Characteristics
The sleeves must be delivered in boxes or containers and stored in suitable whorehouse,
sheltered from direct sunlight and far from any external heat source as per Manufacturer’s
recommendations.
On delivery, the packing of the sleeves must be examined and inspected for absence of
obvious damage, integrity and acceptance for installation.
The sleeves must be raised from the ground to avoid contamination from water and any
other foreign substances.
Section 4 - Steel Surface Preparation
Upon successfully completion of the line pipes field weld and non-destructive tests, the
field joint surface shall be cleaned and prepared for heat shrinkable sleeve application.
All rust, scale and weld spatter forms shall be removed prior to the pipe metal surface
cleaning.
Any foreign substance such as oil, grease, chemicals, mud … etc. shall be removed.
The steel surface can be cleaned only when it is completely dry that is when it has a
temperature 3OC higher than the dew point and the ambient relative humidity is lower
than 90%. If not, the field joint area shall be preheated to obtain the suitable cleaning
conditions.
The steel surface will be mechanically cleaned by power wire brush obtaining a minimum
finishing grade St 3.
Bevel the anti-corrosion coating edges on both sides of the joint be approximately 30 O or
less from the horizontal.
Preheat the pipe metal surface by propane torch up to the proper temperature
recommended from heat shrinkable sleeve Manufacturer, if required.
After completion of pipe metal surface preparation of field joint, the cut-back area of anti
corrosion coating will be protected by Heat Shrinkable Sleeve.
The preheating temperature shall be as per Manufacturer’s recommendations and shall
check by means of proper approved method.
Cover Fitting
Once the coating area has been cleaned and preheated, the protective film shall be
removed from the coating sleeve and the sleeve wrapped centrally around the field joint.
The overlap on existing anti-corrosion coating shall be at least 50 mm minimum on both
sides. The overlapping portion shall be heated and pressed by gloved hand.
The closure patch shall be applied after removal of the protective film from the pressure
sensitive adhesive strip in 12 O’clock position.
The heated closure patch shall be smoothed by gloved hand to eliminate any entrapped
air and to ensure good bonding.
Preheat the edge part by propane torch and press the heated part by gloved hand.
Shrinking Process
Heat and shrink the sleeve on the bottom part of the pipe, starting from the center
towards one end of sleeve by moving the torch up and down along the
circumference direction holding flame perpendicularly against the pipe surface.
And after from the center towards the other end.
The shrunk part of the sleeve shall be massaged with a gloved hand, a roller or both to
eliminate any air bubbles between the sleeve and pipe metal surface.
The upper part of the sleeve shall be heated and shrunk in the same manner as the
bottom to complete the sleeve installation.
Inspection and Testing
If the field joint coating does not pass inspection, that one should be repaired according to
the approved repair procedure and re-inspected.
otherwise, the sleeve will be removed and apply new one.
