Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work o f preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters o f
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the di fferent approval criteria needed for the
di fferent types o f ISO documents should be noted. This document was dra fted in accordance with the
editorial rules o f the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some o f the elements o f this document may be the subject o f
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identi fying any or all such patent rights. Details o f
any patent rights identified during the development o f the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso .org/patents).
Any trade name used in this document is in formation given for the convenience o f users and does not
constitute an endorsement.
For an explanation o f the voluntary nature o f standards, the meaning o f ISO specific terms and
expressions related to con formity assessment, as well as in formation about ISO's adherence to
the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) see
www.iso .org/iso/foreword .html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, Subcommittee SC 41,
Specific aspects for gaseous fuels.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 15500-4:2012), which has been
technically revised. It also incorporates the Amendment ISO 15500-4:2012/Amd.1:2016. The main
changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
A list of all parts in the ISO 15500 series can be found on the ISO website.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso .org/members .html.

4 Marking
Marking o f the component shall provide su fficient in formation to allow the following to be traced:
a) the manu facturer’s or agent’s name, trademark or symbol;
b) the model designation (part number);
c) the working pressure or working pressure and temperature range;
d) the serial number or date code.
NOTE This in formation can be provided by a suitable identification code on at least one part o f the component
when it consists of more than one part.
5.1 The manual valve shall comply with the applicable provisions o f ISO 15500-1 and ISO 15500-2,
and with the tests specified in Clause 6 . Tolerances should follow the specifications o f ISO 15500-2.
5.2 Manual valve handles, when provided, shall be securely attached to the valve spindle.
5.3 A manual valve with 90° rotation from “on” to “o ff” position shall be provided with rigidly secured
stops to limit rotation.
5.5 Valves having 90° o f rotation (quarter turn) from “on” to “o ff” positions shall have the handles
perpendicular to the direction o f flow at the valve inlet when in the “o ff” position.
5.6 All valves shall close when the handle is rotated clockwise, unless otherwise specified.
6 Tests
6.1 Applicability
The tests required to be carried out are indicated in Table 1.
6.3 Leakage
Test the manual valve at the temperatures and pressures given in Table 2.
6.4.1 Test the manual valve in accordance with the procedure for testing continued operation given in
ISO 15500-2, for 10 000 cycles, or for 50 cycles for service valves but lower the downstream pressure o f
the test fixture to less than 0,5 MPa (5 bar) and perform the leakage test in accordance with 6.3. If the
valve is designed to be used with pressure di fferential in both directions then the cycle procedure above
shall be repeated in the opposite direction.
The service valve in its normal operational position shall also be exposed to the total number o f fill or
duty cycles appropriate for the component to which it is a ffixed and shall meet the internal and external
leakage in accordance with 6.3.
6.4.2 Fo llo wing cycling and leakage tes ting, the manual valve s hall b e cap ab le o f co mp letely o p ening
and clo s ing when a to rque no greater than the ap p ro p riate o ne s p ecified in Table 3 is applied to the valve
handle in a directio n that o p ens it co mp letely and in the o p p o s ite directio n. The tes t s hall b e co nducted
