Foreword

The Indonesian National Standard (abbreviated as SNI) 0410:2017, entitled "Metal bend
testing methodologies", is a revision of SNI 07-0410-1989, "Metal compression bending testing
methodologies", which was prepared to meet the needs of technological developments and
specifications of products that continue to evolve.
This standard was prepared by 77-01 Technical Committee for Metals, Steel, and Steel
Products and was discussed at a Technical Meeting and agreed upon at a Consensus Meeting
in Bogor on September 29, 2016, which was attended by the Technical Committee, Producers,
Consumers, Government, Associations, Universities, Experts, Consumer Protection Body
(LPK), and other related government agencies.
This standard passed the consensus process through a poll from November 25, 2016 –
February 25, 2017.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some elements of this document may be the subject
of patent rights. The National Standardization Agency shall not be held responsible for

Metal bend testing methodologies
1. Scope
1.1. This standard covers the classification of bending test pieces of metallic materials. The
selection of the test pieces is adjusted to the standard for each material to be tested. Other
standards for bending test pieces that are not included in this standard and have specific
characteristics may be used by referring to their respective standards in this standard,
excluding tube and pipe test pieces with a diameter greater than 2 inches.
1.2. This standard determines the bending properties of metals according to the requirements
of the tested material.
2. Principle
The bend test consists of submitting a test piece of a round, square, rectangular, or polygonal
cross-section to plastic deformation by bending, without changing the direction of loading, until
a specified angle of bend is reached. This test aims to determine the occurrence of cracks or
other defects on the curved outer surface of the test piece. The axes of the two legs of the test
piece remain in a plane perpendicular to the axis of bending without torsion. In the case of a
180° bend, the two lateral surfaces may, depending on the requirements of the material
standard, lie flat against each other or may be parallel at a specified distance, and a plunger
is used to control this distance.
3. Shape, sampling, and preparation of test pieces
3.1. Test piece No. 1
This type of test piece is usually used for the bend tests of metal plates, bars, and rectangular
materials with a thickness of 3 mm or more, see Figure 1.

Note:
t is the thickness of the test piece
W is the width of the test piece (20 mm to 50 mm)
L is the length of the test piece (determined based on the thickness of the test piece
and the testing apparatus utilized)
Figure 1 – Test piece No.1

If the width of the material does not meet the provisions of the standard test piece, the available
width of the material shall be used. If the thickness of the test piece is more than 25 mm, the
test piece shall be machined on one side until the thickness is 25 mm or less. During the
testing, the unmachined side shall be placed on the outside of the curvature. If necessary, the
surface of the cut area can be machined.
3.2. Test piece No. 2
This type of test piece is usually used for the bend test of steel bars and non-ferrous metal

bars, see Figure 2.

"Copyright of the National Standardization Agency - A copy of this standard is made for display on www.bsn.go.id, not for commercial purposes."
Note:
DO is the diameter or vertical distance of the cross-section
L is the length (determined based on the D value of the test piece and the testing
apparatus used)
Figure 2 – Test piece No. 2

If the diameter or vertical distance of the cross-section of the metal bar is more than 30 mm,
all external surfaces of the test piece shall be machined with a smooth surface until it reaches
25 mm or more, see Figure 3.
When performing a bend test on this test piece, the unmachined surface is placed on the
outside of the curvature.

section of more than 30 mm and when reduction is required

3.3. Test piece No. 3

This type of test piece is usually used for the bend test of metal plates with a thickness of less
than 3 mm, see Figure 4.

Note:
t is the thickness of the test piece
W is the width of the test piece (15 mm to 50 mm)
L is the length of the test piece (determined based on the thickness of the test piece
and the testing apparatus utilized)

If the width of the test piece does not meet the standard specifications of the test piece, the
available width of the material shall be used. The outer surface resulting from the cutting
process must be machined with a smooth surface.
3.4. Finish of the edges of rectangular test pieces
The edges of the rectangular test piece shall be rounded according to the provisions presented
in Table 1.

t > 50 3.0 or less

3.5. Test pieces from forgings, castings, and semi-finished products

The shape and sampling of forgings, castings, and semi-finished products are specified in the
material standards.
3.6. Test pieces for pipes with a maximum outside diameter of 2 inches
The shape and sampling of pipe products with a maximum outer diameter of 2 inches are
determined based on pipe product standards.
4. Testing method
4.1. Press bending method
The test by press bending method shall be conducted as follows:
a) The supports and mandrels on the plungers shall be parallel to each other. The surfaces
of the plungers and supports, which will come in contact with the test piece, shall be coated
with lubricant (e.g., oil).
b) The end of the plunger shall have a cylindrical surface with a radius equal to the specified
inner radius, and the length of the cylindrical surface shall be greater than the width of the
test piece.
c) The part of supports that will come in contact with the test piece shall be of a cylindrical
surface with a radius of 10 mm or more.
d) The distance between the supports shall comply with Formula (1) (see Figure 5). The
tolerance of the distance between the supports shall comply with the provisions of Table
2.
Lp = 2r + 3t ………………………………………………………. (1)
Note:
Lp is the distance between two supports (mm)

NOTE Bend test on pipes with a maximum outside diameter of 2 inches shall be carried out
according to pipe product standards.
e) As shown in Figure 5, the bend angle formed by the press bending method shall be up to
170°. When the bend angle is 180°, the test piece shall be pressed, after being bent up to
170°, which means that the test method is in accordance with Figure 5. One end to the
other has an insert whose thickness is twice the specified inner radius, as shown in Figure
6.
In Figure 5, when the distance between the supports is made as Lp = 2r + 2t and the
tolerance of the distance between the supports is as presented in Table 3, the test piece
shall be considered to have bent to 180° when pressed until the test piece passes through
the clearance between the supports.

4.2. Winding method

The test by winding method shall be conducted as follows:
a) As shown in Figures 8 (a) and (b), one side of the test piece is pressed, and the other side
is wound around the plunger or bends at a certain angle so that the center of the test piece
is formed precisely as specified.
The position to which the force is applied is shown in Figures 8 (a) and (b).

In the case of the bend angle of 180° and the especially small diameter radius or close contact
bending, both ends of the test piece press against each other until a certain inner radius or
close contact is formed, as shown in Figure 6 or Figure 7, after bending up to 180° with an
inner radius shown in Figure 8.
4.3. V-Block method
The test force shall be applied gradually to the test piece placed on the V-Block by putting a
plunger in the middle to be bent to a certain shape (Figure 9). The V-Block method shall be
used when required. The shape and dimension of the V-Block and plunger shall be specified
in the material standard.

4.4. Test temperature
The bending test shall be carried out within the temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. When
requiring a more stringent temperature setting, the test temperature shall be set at 23 ± 5 °C.
4.5. Bending angle and inner radius of the plunger
When the inner radius of a plunger is specified, its value must be at the upper limit, and the
resulting bend must be lower than the inner radius of the bend.
5. Interpretation of test results

The interpretation of the bend tests shall be carried out according to the requirements of the
product standard. When these requirements are not specified, the absence of cracks visible
without the use of magnifying aids is considered evidence that the test piece withstood the
bend test.
6. Test report
The test report shall include the following information:
- a reference to this standard;
- identification of the test piece;
- shape and dimensions of the test piece;
- test method;
- test temperature (if the test temperature is less than 10 °C and more than 35 °C);
- test result.
