MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is my great pleasure to introduce the second annual report of Kuwait
College of Science and Technology.

The academic year 2017/18 have seen significant developments that

will shape the future of the university. The number of our students has
crossed the 500 in September 2017 and reached 750 in September
2018. At the end of the year, the front-runner students passed the 100
credit hours which means that our first graduation ceremony is ap-
proaching fast.

Over the academic year, we continued our fruitful collaboration with

the IIT Delhi on the development and the implementation of the cur-
Professor Khalid Al-Begain riculum as our students are progressing through the semesters in order
to iron any issues that may face the students.

During the year, we were successful in recruiting very high-quality fac-

ulty and teaching staff. By September 2018, the total number of faculty
and teaching staff with PhD and Master degrees passed 60. The staff-
to-student ratio has been maintained at a rate below 1:14 at all times.

In this report, we also report proudly on the achievement of our faculty

in research. For us, together with quality teaching and excellent stu-
dent support, research is a key pillar in achieving our vision of becom-
ing a regional leader in engineering and entrepreneurship. In assessing
the research achievements, we consider the international standards in
particular; quality research projects funded by external organisations
and number of publications in refereed journals and conferences. Over
the last year, KCST faculty were successful in securing eight research
grants through competitive calls from Kuwait Foundation for the Ad-
vancement of Science (KFAS). According to KFAS officials, the quality
of the applications from KCST has been the best among all received
applications.

In addition, KCST faculty had an intensive record of publications with

over 110 journal papers published with KCST as affiliation as well as
high number of books, book chapters and conference papers over two
years. The Nanotechnology Laboratory led by Dr Nader Shehata were
successful in publishing in a Q1 journal a paper with results obtained in
the lab at KCST. Most pleasing that they have also got an acceptance
for another paper co-authored by two of our students.

On the administrative side, the university has seen the appointment

of three key managerial positions in Marketing and PR, Student Affairs
and HR and Administration. These appointments contributed to im-
prove the services to the staff and students at the College.

It has been a very exciting and challenging year but it was also a year
that filled us with confidence in the future and in that we are on the
right track towards achieving the vision of the Board of Trustees.

Summary of the project:

Surface properties of materials are significant in determining the applications of a material and the
modifications of surface properties have been drawing wide attention. Laser matter interaction
and the associated material removal resulting from ablation process has been active field of
research ever since the invention of laser. As a result of laser ablation a comparatively rough
surface depending on the rate of ablation is generated if the fluence is adequate. Apart from the
random features formed specific ordered surface features can also be generated on the irradiated
sample through controlled ablation by restricting the laser fluence near ablation threshold of
the material. The generated surface features are generally referred as laser induced periodic
surface structures or LIPSS. As a matter of fact, these surface features show a close correlation
with various irradiation parameters as well as intrinsic physical properties of the target. It is worth
to mention that it is possible to control the geometry of the structures by precisely controlling
laser parameters such as polarization, number of pulses, pulse energy, angle of incidence and
so on, that makes the process very flexible. The ambient of the process provide a further way to
influence the spatial distribution of these structures. Since surface morphology plays a key role
in numerous physical properties of a solid surface (e.g. optical, mechanical, wetting, chemical
and biological), direct laser surface and 3D structuring is a striking tool since it can possibly offer
feasible and effective ways to tailor or control material functionalities. In this project, femtosecond
laser used surface and 3D structuring is employed to simultaneously modify the topography and
nanostructure in different class of materials (semiconductors to polymers) to find suitability for
applications in wide range of fields (solar cell to medicine). We look forward to developing the
next generation of promising photonic materials and propose for better solar cell technology.

PROJECT REPORT

Project title : Free Vibration of Composite Layered Cylindrical shells Filled with Fluid under shear
theory

Funding Organisation and amount (if any) : Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences,
Kuwait. Amount 5000KWD.

Lead Researcher : Viswanathan Kodakkal Kannan

Collaborating researchers: Zainal Abdul Aziz

Collaborating Institutions: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia

Summary of the project:

Free vibration of symmetric and antisymmetric angle-plylaminated circular cylindrical shell filled
with fluid is studied .The equations of motion of the circular cylindrical shells are based on first-
order shear deformation theory. The fluid is assumed to be quiescent and inviscid. Applying the
permeability condition on the fluid-shell interface to ensure the contact between fluid and the
shell wall. Since the interaction of the fluid and shell wall happened in radial direction so that the
fluid terms is added at the radial displacement of the equations of motion of circular cylindrical
shells. The arbitrary number of layers oriented in symmetric and anti-symmetric manner is
considered to analyses the frequency characteristic of laminated shells. Parametric studies will be
carried out to analyze the frequency parameters with respect to the material properties, number
of layers, ply angles, thickness to radius ratio and length to radius ratio of the shell filled with fluid.
The numerical results obtained using the spline approximation will be validated through existing
literature. This study may be helpful for engineers to design the cylindrical shell structure using
the materials applied in this study. This type of shell structures can be built in the petroleum, ship
and civil industries to minimize the weight and maximize the stability of the structures, which is
definitely helpful for the Kuwaiti society.

Project title: Optical nanosensors with integrated flexible printed nanoantennas for water
quality monitoring
Funding Organisation and amount (if any): KFAS, 49500 KD (Running, December 2017-December
2019)
Lead Researcher: Dr. Nader Shehata
Collaborating researchers:
Collaborating Institutions:
Summary of the project:

This project introduces an autonomously managed sensor network for water quality monitoring
with two major contributions; design of optical nanosensor and developing printed nano-antennas
for sensor nodes. Firstly, it is aimed to design optical nano-sensors to detect a set of parameters
which indicate the water quality, such as dissolved oxygen concentration, PH, and tiny pollutants.
These optical sensors use cerium oxide (ceria) nanoparticles as active sensing material due to
the higher surface-to-volume ratio with corresponding higher sensitivity. The optical sensing
mechanism is better than the electrochemical one with no need of reference electrodes. On the
other hand, the used sensor nodes for communication will be embedded with printed flexible
antennas using conductive nanoparticles ink. That can reduce the cost of antennas which depend
on cleanroom processes of lithography and etching. Also, the usage of conductive nanoparticles
ink is more efficient compared to the bulky ink for lower surface losses and consequently larger
radiation area. In our proposed system, the targeted network is controlled by an automated large-
scale management platform that handles data collection, analysis, visualization and decision
support with minimum human intervention. Hence, our automated flexible sensor network can
be used through water quality monitoring over large scale distance.

Summary of the project:

Energy harvesting is an indispensable area of research for both developed and developing
countries. In this proposal, mechanical energy in oscillating systems will be considered for
harvesting, which includes a myriad of applications such as wave energy converters, sensors,
and biomedical engineering. This project aims to explore the fabrication and characterization
of an energy harvester based on Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) aligned nanofibers generated
by the electrospinning technique. The electrospinning technique allows the applications of high
DC-Voltage which will enhance the formation of enough polarization inside β-PVDF, to support
parallel β-sheets. Moreover, the nanofibers will be aligned in fabrication by adding a collector
with a high rotator speed (up to 2000 rpm) or by applying both electric and magnetic fields at
the collector side of the electrospinning facility. Also, Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) will be added
in-situ to enhance the performance of β-sheets and consequently enhance the efficiency of piezo-
electricity of the formed nanofibers, taking into consideration the mechanical properties of the
host PVDF such as strength, stiffness, and toughness. Then, the piezoelectric sensitivity of our
synthesized nanofibers can be tested through an initiated piezoelectric analysis setup.

Project title: Solar cells efficiency improvement using optical nanostructures coating layers

Funding Organisation and amount (if any): KFAS, 8000 KD (Running, August 2017- October
2018)
Lead Researcher: Dr. Nader Shehata (co-PI)
Collaborating researchers: Dr. Ali Hajjiah (PI)
Collaborating Institutions: Kuwait University
Summary of the project:

In this study, the main target is to improve optically solar cells power conversion efficiency. One
of the efficiency reduction reasons solar cells are able to absorb only visible wavelengths and
convert it into the required electrical output power, while the rest solar irradiance energies
are considered as losses. Furthermore, about 49 percent only of the incident solar irradiance
are visible wavelength while the rest of the irradiance energies are infra-red (IR) or ultraviolet
(UV) photons. Optical conversion materials are considered as the best ways to exploit this
un-absorbed bands within the radiant solar energy and convert it into visible absorbed ones
using up or down conversion materials. Rare earth trivalent erbium (Er3+) material is one of the
best efficient up conversion materials specially after doping it in a host crystal. Sodium yttrium
fluoride (β-NaYF4) and cerium oxide nanoparticles are considered as the best studied Er3+ host
crystal materials. NaYF4 host materials have low vibrational energy that leads to achieve high up
conversion efficiency after doping erbium ions inside it. Meanwhile, ceria nanoparticles doped
with erbium have the advantages of being both up/down optical conversion of solar cells. The
existence of Ce3+ ions in side ceria nanoparticles help in the down-conversion from UV excitation
to visible emission, while erbium dopant forms energy levels inside the low-phonon ceria host
to up-convert IR excitations into green and red emissions. When coating erbium-doped ceria
nanoparticlesorNaYF4 on the back side of a solar cell, a promising improvement in the solar cell
efficiency might be happen because of the visible photon energies resulted from the optical
conversion processes.

Project title: Nonrigid registration for Diffusion Tensor Images to enhanced diagnosis of a host
of disorders and neurologic conditions.

Lead Researcher: Dr. Mohammed Khader

Collaborating researchers: Dr. Mohammed Khader, Dr. Emanuele Schiavi(University of Rey Juan
Carlos/Madrid/Spain), Dr. Ben Hamza (Concordia University/Montreal/Canada)
Collaborating Institutions: Concordia University
Summary of the project:

Diffusion tensor imaging has shown promise in the early detection and diagnosis of a host of
disorders and neurologic conditions. In this paper, we propose a nonrigid registration approach
for diffusion tensor images using a multicomponent information-theoretic measure. Explicit
orientation optimization is enabled by incorporating tensor reorientation, which is necessary for
wrapping diffusion tensor images. Experimental results on diffusion tensor images indicate the
feasibility of the proposed approach and a much better performance compared to the affine
registration method based on mutual information in terms of registration accuracy in the presence
of geometric distortion.

The first year of operations was a time when we faced major challenges but also achieved
significant progress. We did a lot of listening and learning during this period. The outcome of
all the information we gathered helped to take our efforts and impacts to the next level in the
Academic Year 2017-2018.
The Strategic objectives set for the Academic Year 2017-2018 were to improve the capacity
and profile of the Student Affairs Unit and to develop administrative structures and systems that
will enhance the essential services provided to students.

Objectives/activities
• Expanding and reorganizing the Student Affairs area
• Improving existing processes and procedures
• Developing and adopting informed practices and systems
• Providing student support services

The modern and spacious entrance hall of the KCST main building was reorganized to create
an Admissions and Registration Area to facilitated all admission activities. This area also served
as the help desk where students came to request any services from Student Affairs, thus , helping
not only to curtail the flow of students into the offices but also enabling Student Affairs staff to
attend to requests and provide solutions more efficiently. As part of reorganization, rooms for
archiving and storing confidential student files and Exam scripts were identified and allocated,
and new spaces were also created for the reception and the security desks. The addition of a
book shop brought in a lot of colour and activity to this area.

Based on our experiences of the previous year, one of our key objectives was to advance the
existing processes and procedures. A more distinct structure was developed and introduced for
the Entrance Exams. The content of the exams of Math and Physics were revised and updated
and the method of administrating the exams was changed to online. A new procedure was
introduced to expedite the Transfer Credits process.

In Fall 2017, significent improvements were made when on-line Registration for courses became
available to all students. Furthermore, in Spring 2018 assisted-registration was introduced with
academics available to answer questions and counsel students.

Further improvements were brought about in organizing and conducting midterm and final
exams. Two large halls were prepared with all the required testing facilities. Experienced external
invigilators were assigned in the testing rooms along with invigilators from KCST academic
departments. Male and female security guards were employed to check students with security
wands to ensure that students did not carry mobiles or other electronic devises into the testing
rooms. Disciplinary action measures were enforced. Warning letters were sent, and students
caught for misconduct were required to appear before the Academic Committee.

The procedures and process for collecting and posting grades in the SIS system were streamlined.
The Appeals process following examinations were organized in a timely and transparent manner.
GPA warning letters were issued to students with a GPA below 2.00.

Meetings were held with all special needs students individually to receive feedback on their
progress and to hear and resolve any difficulties they faced in the class rooms or exam halls.

46
Considerable effort and time were put into identifying a good system for recording and tracking
students’ class attendance. Several options ranging from swiping smart ID cards to finger print
recording are under consideration. Similarly, a lot of time and effort went into the search for
a timetabling software that can be integrated to the SIS system. Alongside, significant work
was put into the SIS system -The advanced Student Management System software by Campus
Management. The challenge of ironing out the glitches and improving the use of the SIS system
effectively continues with training and hands-on education.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER – LIBRARY

Name of Staff Position

Nada Arbutina Head Librarian

KCST Library and Learning Resource Center enable students and professors to discover relevant
information and has one of the most important role in educational mission of the College to
develop and support information-literate learners who can discover, access and use information
effectively for academic issues and research. Library takes active part in instructional programs
and educational goals of the College.

Yet, KCST library is still on its bases and many things have to be done to achieve goals which are in
line with academic libraries standards . In short terms and long terms KCST LRC is aiming to reach
and fulfill international standards for libraries in higher education. To achieve this goal, KCST LRC
needs for start to improve collections of print and electronic resources focusing on course-related
information and supplemental resources.

We always have to keep in mind that library, among numerous other roles, present the College
outside its walls and significantly contributes to marketing for new students’ enrollment. At
this very moment KCST Library and LRC isn`t flattery to this aim, neither in premises neither in
collections.

Standards articulate expectations for library contributions to institutional effectiveness and they
are structured to provide a comprehensive framework using an outcomes-based approach, with
evidence collected in most appropriate ways.

Library services and offers on zero number in 2018: Serials (electronic, non-print and hardcopies);
E-resources: journals, streaming audio and video, audiobooks.
Absolute must, within this year, is that Library gets LIBRARY CATALOGUE (OPAC)

OPAC is one of module of the integrated automation system used by the Library. Library online
public access catalog allows users to check availability status of library resources, including books
and journals and provides them with personal accounts where they can overview the items they
have checked out and the overdue items.
Without catalogue every other library actions are impossible.

60
The chosen foundation for statistics parameters is the number of students (who are currently
enrolled in KCST), but the following has to be pointed:
A) Library provides its services also the Faculty (Full-time and part-time faculty members), Staff
(Administrative and academic support staff)
B) Number of students will increase each year to come, and we have to be well prepared for
that, but for the moment and for future 3 years reports this number of 750 students will be
taken as a base number regarding comparison and possibility of monitoring.

In progressively increasing line of standards implementation, it is planned that standards for

academic libraries will be reached by 2021.

The most important thing is not just to follow present situation, but to be aware of future and to
be prepared for it.

PRINTED BOOK COLLECTIONS

GENERAL COLLECTION

COLLECTIONS TO BE BY THE END OF 2018.

• KCST ACADEMIC COLLECTION – Mentioned in previous period as Faculty author
collection. It is important to have one as we aim to have high academic standards and this
is from academic point of view absolute must. If you published any papers or books, since
2015 until now, will be glad to get the details and provide a copy of them in the library
• As a sub-collection to Arabic, KUWAIT COLLECTION is planned. It will be about the country
we all live in as informational (historical, statistical, geographical, political…) and as a
patriotic view for our students
• LITERATURE COLLECTION – It is absolutely necessary to have one, since it is the best way
to build a culture and habit of reading. Here we have to be very careful, when you suggest
books for this collection have in mind cultural, religious and moral rules and please be
aware that list of these books will be double-reviewed. Please consider authors` reputation
and the publisher.
• MANUAL COLLECTION – Teach-yourself publications which cover Psychology, How to…,
Hobbies, etc.

61
The textbook collection contains print books linked to programs offered and online databases for
research with on-campus and off-campus access.
The power of academic library is not just in collecting, but also organizing, preservation and
making knowledge accessible. The academic library takes it`s integral role in supporting KCST

PERSONEL
Presently just one person is responsible for all LRC and library duties (Hear of Library – Dr. Nada
Arbutina). Having in mind advanced goals which suits respectable and growing institution as
KCST is, it is expected and absolutely necessary that new staff join in very short period of time.
Contemporary library staff must include people who see themselves as active partner in a race for
so-called 3R (relevance, regard, resources) and College success all together. Academic librarian
has skills and an ability to identify specific areas in which can advance the institution in fulfilling
its academic mission.
Library staff must be capable of working effectively in partnership with faculty members to enhance
the strength of teaching and research. Among all, library staff has to have skills and knowledge to
keep students attracted and engaged.

The Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services (UCTDS), is dedicated to helping students
resolve personal difficulties which may interfere with their personal and academic functioning.
Some services include developmental, remedial and preventive services.
UCTDS is a division of the Deanship of Students Services at Kuwait College of Science and
Technology (KCST). UCTDS assists students in their endeavors to achieve both academic and
personal success.
UCTDS provides counseling services which includes both academic and individual sessions.
Additionally, students struggling with learning may avail themselves of individual testing to
discover their learning styles and strengths. Students with both permanent and/or temporary
disabilities can receive support services through UCTDS. Students will have the opportunity to
request the UCTDS’s free services any time after lodging the application for admission and into
graduation.
The goals of UCTDS are to help students with disabilities to:
• Achieve academic success.
• Develop an on-going relationship with our Unit.
• Improve communication with the professors.
• Promote equal opportunity for all students.
• Assist students with identifying appropriate resources on campus.

80
Mission

The Mission of the Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services (UCTDS) is to serve as a
resource for information and as an advocate for students with disabilities for full participation
in all aspects of campus life. UCTDS provide support services to the community of KCST by
ensuring equal access to educational facilities, programs, services, and activities, and by providing
additional assistance through counseling, and collaborations with additional KCST resources.
Vision

In support of the Mission of KCST, UCTDS exists to enhance the development and success of all
members of the KCST community with regard to academics, personal and interpersonal growth.
Adhering to the values of excellence, community, respect, personal development, responsible
citizenship, and integrity, UCTDS recognizes the uniqueness, dignity, value and gifts of all
individuals.

1. Confidentiality and Release of Information

UCTDS is committed to ensuring all information regarding a student remains confidential as
required or permitted by law. This information may include grades, biographical history, disability
information, and case notes. No one has immediate access to student files in our office except
authorized staff. Any information regarding a disability gained from medical or psychological
evaluations shall be considered confidential and shall be shared with others within the institution
on a need-to-know basis only.
A student may sign a written consent form giving our office permission to discuss the disability
with advisors, faculty or staff, who require further information.

2. Accessing Services
To be eligible for academic accommodations through UCTDS, students must present
documentation of a disability. Documentation must be provided before accommodations can
be arranged. In most cases, documentation will be needed from doctoral level professionals
such as psychologists, medical doctors, psychiatrists or neurologists. The professional should
be experienced in diagnosing and treating the disability, should prepare the documentation on
appropriate clinical stationary, should sign the document and should be able to provide KCST
with verification of the experience and expertise in the specialty if asked.
The type of documentation may vary dependent upon the type of disability. Documentation
should be current within three years, but exceptions may be necessary dependent upon individual
circumstances and disability.
2.1 Prospective Students
All students with a disability who wish to access services are encouraged to contact the UCTDS
in the early stages of their College planning. Once an application for admission has been
submitted, please schedule a meeting with a UCTDS to determine eligibility for academic
support services and accommodations. During this meeting, UCTDS will discuss appropriate
documentation and transition concerns.

81
2.2. Students Without Documentation
Students with a disability are advised not to delay meeting with UCTDS because of the lack of
appropriate documentation. If documentation is needed, UCTDS can assist you.
Students who have not been tested for cognitive disabilities, such as a learning disability,
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or a psychological disability, but suspect that they may
have one can contact UCTDS for assistance.
2.3 Current Students
At any point during the semester, students can register with UCTDS and request
accommodations. The accommodations are not retroactive and are based on the nature of the
student’s disability, the environmental barriers encountered, and the content of documentation
provided.
Students who are fully registered with UCTDS must request an Accommodation Letter each
semester.

3 Testing (Learning Support Services)?

At KCST, students are encouraged to be active participants in their own learning. Why do
students visit Testing Services?
• They may be struggling with a specific course
• They may be struggling with many, or even all of their courses
• They may want to learn more effective (test-focused) study skills
Testing Services offered include: Cognitive Assessments; Achievement Assessments, Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; and Learning Styles Inventories

3.1 Cognitive Assessments

The Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services is licensed to conduct “cognitive
assessments.” These assessments identify areas of strength and potential weakness in a
student’s approach to learning (IS THIS CORRECT?). In implementing these assessments,
the Unit is able to work with students to develop their existing strengths so as to promote a
more positive and effective learning experience. Students who require a cognitive assessment
should speak directly with staff in UCTDS.

3.2 Achievement Assessments

The Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services is licensed to conduct “achievement
assessments” to identify a student’s current academic levels. These assessments allow the
student to obtain information about gaps in their current understanding. Accordingly, the
Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services can assist students with strategies and
techniques to lessen the impact of learning gaps. Students who require an achievement
assessment should speak directly with staff in the Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability
Services.

82
3.3 ADHD Screening
The Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services is licensed to conduct “Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD) Screenings.” If a student exhibits ADHD characteristics, s/he
will be referred to his/her physician for a final diagnosis. The Unit of Counseling, Testing,
and Disability Services provides students with ADHD training in techniques and strategies to
negate its debilitating effects. Students who require an ADHD screening should speak directly
with staff in the Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services.

3.4 Learning Styles Inventories

The Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services is licensed to conduct “Learning Style
Inventories” to identify a student’s current academic levels. These inventories are targeted to
provide students with information regarding their specific learning style. (Styles include: verbal
linguistic learners; kinesthetic learners; musical learners; visual spatial learners; naturalistic
learners; etc.) By identifying a student’s natural learning style, the Unit of Counseling, Testing,
and Disability Services is able to make suggestions which, in turn, should positively impact the
way this student approaches his/her learning. Students who require a Learning Style Inventory
should speak directly with staff in the Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services.

4 Disability Services
Students with disabilities may request additional support through the Unit of Counseling,
Testing, and Disability Services. The University endeavors to support students with special needs
where resources are available. Requests are confidential and will be handled with complete
discretion. Students with verified disabilities will be provided reasonable accommodations
that provide equal access to educational facilities, programs, services, and activities. Students
may make requests for services by contacting the Unit of Counseling, Testing, and Disability
Services located in Building A?.

5.2 Academic Counseling
Academic counseling services are intended for at-risk students on academic probation. The
counselor reviews the student’s academic record and learning history before coordinating
with students to define personal, educational and career goals as well as the skills needed to
achieve these goals. In addition, the counselor assess the student’s skill level in areas identified
as essential to achievement. The counselor helps to establish the competency level that the
student should strive to achieve. The counselor identifies curricular, co- curricular, experiential
and community learning strategies that will enable students to develop these skills. Finally, The
counselor reviews and evaluates progress toward goal achievement and skills development.
Individualized plans are devised to provide clarity for the students in order to ensure lifting of
probation. Academic advisors who identify students with academic difficulties, are required
to refer them to academic counseling to work with the student to identify the reasons for the
difficulties as well as communicate strategies for success. Issues are identified and the student
receives an individual session to discuss any problems they may be experiencing in order to
find solutions.

Generally, UCTDS is open Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM from the arrival of
students for the September semester until the end of Summer Semester. There are no scheduled
walk-in hours. Appointments are recommended for all counseling sessions to be sure the
counselor is available.
The staff/faculty member will also contact the counseling area, send an email, or stop by the
counselor’s office to provide further information. The staff/faculty member informs the counselor
if the report is for information only, the student will self-report, or if the counselor needs to insist
on a meeting with the student. The counselor may follow up with the faculty/staff member to
report if the student came to a session, or if the faculty/staff member is not sure how to interact
with the student.
Contacting the Student: The counselor uses home and mobile phone numbers, KCST email
system, and/or text messaging to set initial and follow up sessions with students who have
been referred to counseling or who have requested the services. If the reporting person and/or
the counselor feel that it is urgent for the counselor to meet with the student immediately, the
counselor can go to the office of the reporting staff/faculty member to meet the student. Once
the student is contacted, a meeting is set-up and documented with the Counselor.
First Session: Provide the student with the confidentiality agreement (located at the UCTDS),
explain, and sign. Review intake form with student, identify primary issues. This typically takes 1-2
sessions. After thorough review of intake form together, a treatment plan is formulated with long-

88
term and short term counseling goals. Explain how short term counseling works, how it would
benefit their situation, what to expect next. Make follow up appointment, give “homework” to
help them process before next session. Give referrals for urgent needs.
After the intake the session onward the therapeutic process starts based on the Treatment plan
formulated in the first or second session.

6.1 Duration
Each session is of 45-60 minutes and is pre-scheduled with the consent of the student, taking
his /her academic schedule in account. The 45-60 minutes session is on weekly basis.

6.2 Assessments
The diagnosis and therapy depends on the clinical observation, the information presented by
the students/instructors/parents and formal assessments. All standardized tests are used to
assess the emotional and psychological problems. The assessment results are interpreted and
explained to the students concerned.
• BDI : Beck Depression Inventory
• BAI: Beck Anxiety Inventory
• BHS: Beck Hopelessness Scale
• SCL-90 - Symptom Checklist 90-R
• Self -Evaluation : the Glazer - Stress control Life Style Questionnaire
• The Rosenberg Self- Esteem Scale
• SAD: Suicidal Assessment
• SCID-II for Axis II disorders
• CAS - Clinical Anger Scale

6.3 Progress Notes

Progress notes will be completed within 24 hours of services. Progress notes will include
subjective and objective observations, assessment of need, therapeutic techniques used
during the session, and a plan for future services. Progress notes do not include any personal
information of the client. They hold the file no and session no.

6.4 Filling system

• All counseling services provided to KCST undergraduate students is documented in
student counseling files which are kept strictly confidential in the Counseling Center. All
“hard copy” documentation of services and other confidential information is kept in filing
cabinets in a safe place. No student files is removed from the premises, unless required by
a court order or some other extraordinary circumstance.
• Students completes the New Client Information Sheet at the time of their first session each
academic year.

89
• Students reads the Consent for Services form and if in agreement, signs and date the form
at the time of their first session.(remove that)
• Progress notes will be completed within 24 hours of services. Progress notes will include
subjective and objective observations, assessment of need, therapeutic techniques used
during the session, and a plan for future services.
• Missed, canceled, or rescheduled appointments require a brief note by the counselor
indicating what occurred. If a counselor sends a student a letter or e-mail relating to the
appointment, a copy of the correspondence may substitute for the note documenting the
missed, canceled, or rescheduled appointment.
• Documentation of emergency or other services provided after regular working hours
(including any services or consultations accessed by means of the emergency cell phone)
is completed as soon as practically possible, using the “Progress Note” form. The original
form is kept in the student’s counseling file (if applicable).
• Documentation of any student’s permission to release confidential information is made
using Counseling Center release form. The original is kept in the student’s counseling file.
• Copies of any correspondence (including e-mail messages) with or about clients is included
in student counseling files.

Dr. Mushtaq Loan is an accomplished academic/researcher with over 15 years of teaching and
over 20 years of research experience. Most of his research accomplishments to date set the scope
of and open directions, new insight and understanding of particle world. In particular, his research
deals with framework that provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore the phenomena
arising from hadron structure and QCD at finite temperature and density to achieve a predictive
understanding of this new physics. These research problems are at the forefront of experimental
efforts at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CERN. These investigations have enormous implications
in the particle-astrophysical phenomena, such as Big Bang, supernovae explosions and properties
of remnant neutron stars, and could act as an interface between lattice QCD at finite temperature
and cosmology.
As an academic, he has demonstrated ability in developing standards-based curriculum,
instructional design and creating student-centred environment while maintaining high interest
and achievement. Throughout his academic career, he has been committed to the provision of
high quality teaching, foster student development by developing curiosity and independence in
