1984: Part II

Chapters 1-7, pp. 121 - 193

WINTSON AND JULIA

Read the two quotes below:

He did not know her name, … He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young
and pretty ones. (12, 12-26)

He stopped thinking and merely felt. … Their mouths clung together; … (143, 6-10)

 What has changed in between those two quotes? Why?

 Is it only Julia who is responsible for the change?

The phases of their love

Task:
In small groups, focus on one chapter of part II (chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7). Think about the
state of Winston and Julia’s relationship at that point and produce a freeze frame (shot with
your mobile phones) which represents this.

Have the following questions in mind when producing the freeze frame:
- Which stage of Julia and Winston’s relationship does your freeze frame illustrate?
- Why did you position character X/Y in this specific way?
- How could this stage in their relationship be illustrated differently?
