Introduction
Barangay East Rembo is a barangay located in the Second District of Makati City. It is

part of Cluster 5 or the Eastside Cluster along with barangays Comembo, Pembo and Rizal. It is

purely a residential area and based on the 2015 Census of Population conducted by the

Philippine Statistics Authority, East Rembo has a total of 28,114 population and percentage

share of 4.83%. The population density on the other hand, considering its land area and

population count, the barangay has 58 person per 1,000 square meters. Mater Dolorosa Parish

is a well known landmark in this barangay. REMBO is actually an acronym for Riverside Enlisted

Men’s Barrio.

Historical Background

In 1954, the Philippine Armed Forces through the Office of General Alfonso Arellano,

commanding General of Fort Bonifacio authorized the construction of settlements for enlisted

men serving in the armed forces who were based in Fort Bonifacio. Geographically, East Rembo

is at the heart of three barrios namely: West Rembo, Comembo and Pembo. These settlements

were named after the special units of the Armed Forces of the geographical location within or

around the Fort.

According to those who have been living in the barrio since its establishment, East

Rembo is a self-sustaining community. The military administration of the Fort did not need to

provide any assistance to the barrio. The families cooperated and coordinated to build the spirit

of bayanihan in the community. The military administration of the barrio begun in 1956 and in
the latter years when then, President Ferdinand E. Marcos issued Presidential Proclamation

2425 and was implemented in 1986 by then President Corazon C. Aquino granting land titles to

its occupants. The barrios geographical-political boundary was turned-over to the civilian

administration of the Municipality of Makati.

On May 17, 1982, the first barangay election was held and Jose Alamis was installed as the first

elected Barangay Captain. During his term, the barrio celebrated feast day in October in honor

of Our Lady of Fatima, then its Patron Saint. In the succeeding years, the said fiesta celebration

was moved in the month of May creating confusion to the religious community until from the

Archbishop of Manila Cardinal Jaime Sin issued a decree on September 1992, revising the

boundaries of the Parish of Mater Dolorosa and declaring the venerable lady of Sorrows as its

Patron Saint and finally confirming the Feast Day of East Rembo. The Barangay Council of East

Rembo adopted and approved Resolution No. 07-95 last February 10, 1995, resolving the Feast

Day to be officially celebrated every 15th day of September or the Sunday after the 15th day of

September of every year.

Presently, the Barangay has its own Parish church, 3-storey modern Barangay Hall, 2 newly

renovated elementary schools, covered court, health center, livelihood center, children's park,

cemented roads, sufficient potable water supply and stable drainage system far from the past

military administration.

PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR BRGY.EAST REMBO
“YES for CLEANLINESS!”

Introduction:

Barangay East Rembo is a self-sustaining community. The families coordinated and

cooperated to build the spirit of "bayanihan" in the community. Presently, the barangay has its
own Parish Church, 3-storey modern Barangay Hall, two newly renovated elementary schools,
covered court, livelihood and health center, children's park, cemented roads and sufficient
drinkable water supply and stable drainage system. However, there are improper waste
disposal which directly affects its environment like plastics, that releases contaminants into
water, soil and air.

The combined efforts of our Community Extension Program (CEP) and the barangay
East Rembo community, has the mission to reduce waste in each family home unit. Improved
Waste Disposal Management can improve utilization of resources and achieve appealing social
implication.

Objectives:
Our CEP deals in line with an action owing to target the aims of barangay East Rembo
by:
Reducing the amount of waste (biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable),
Inform the community the right conduct of throwing waste/garbage,
Transform waste as a resource of creativity,
Avoid the undisciplined actions of generating waste, and
Ensure every individual that Waste Disposal Management, and adapting the 5R's upholds
in a safe and environmentally-based implementation.

Week 1 – Observation, and Coordination with Barangay Officials

This week was spent observing the barangay area, and from the observation the class will be
able to decide what it can do to help the barangay in its mission to maintain cleanliness. The
class also coordinated the barangay council about the class NSTP immersion program on “Yes
for Cleanliness!”

Week 2 – Presentation of Project

Our NSTP project proposal is to provide recyclable and biodegradable trash bins for the whole
Brgy. of East Rembo. We are going to provide color coded trash bins for the barangay, so that it
would be clean and nice. In this project it will benefit and help the residents promote good
health.

Week 3 – Confirmation

Confirmation:
 We confirm with the brgy. officials if they have any project similar to our proposal.
 We also confirmed with them that we’re conducting seminars and activities to improve
their livelihood or their community by implementing 3R’s, recycling trash and proper
disposal
 We confirmed that we’re giving trash bins as a support to their project for a cleaner
community.
 We also confirmed that we’re able to collect any recyclable materials from the brgy.
that we can used or sell for this event.

Week 4 – Signing of MOA

During this week we presented the MOA and it was signed by the Barangay Chairman.

Week 5 – Collecting of Recyclable of Materials

Week 5 is collecting of recyclable materials that can be used for our craftsmanship training.

Week 6 – Seminar about 5R and Personal Hygiene, and Craftsmanship Training

MODULE
“ For effective waste disposal, segregation is the key.”
SEMINAR:
1. Introducing the project proposal (Trash Bins)
2. Effectiveness of the proposed project.
● Details about 5R’s
● Details about Personal Hygiene due to solid waste.
3. Expectations after the implementation of the proposed project (Color Coded Trash
Bins).

Topics:
1. Project Proposal (Color Coded Trash Bins)
Important reasons that we encourage proper waste segregation:
a.) legal obligations
b.) cost savings
c.) Protection of human health and the environment

This project targets to determine the effects of trash box on waste segregation behaviors
and aims to improve the conditions, quality of life and health of the residence in general.

2. Effectiveness of the Trash Bins

a.Environmental Conservation
Over- consumption and waste of commodities of the residents can be checked by
adopting the 5R’s of consumption.
The 5R’s are:
1. Respect
Respect the environment and all the inhabitants. You can do this by not throwing
garbage to your surroundings. This can help the Brgy.free from dirty and messy
surrounding that may result to pollution. Thus, Respect is the Key.
2. Reduce
Using less or making less of something so that
there's less waste. This also includes using natural resources wisely. We can try doing
this by selecting products that do not have to be added to trash bins. Like for example,
When you go shopping for groceries, make wiser package choices. Be aware of what you
purchased.Flashier packaging should be designed to protect the product from damage,
keep clean and present product information. Buy plain and recyclable packages.

3. Reuse
You can reuse things in its original form instead of throwing them away, or pass it to
others who can use it too. Like for example, If you pack the lunch of your child in the
lunch box instead of buying a packet of chips, you will help in reducing trash because
there will be no plastic to throw away. Drinking a glass of water instead of buying a can
of soda is helpful because there will be one less can in the garbage. If you eat a piece of
fruit instead of drinking juice out of a bottle, there's one less bottle for disposal.
4. Recycling
Reusable materials can be remade into either the same product or new products.
Making new items from recycled ones wastes less energy and other resources than
using brand new materials. Don't throw away anything that can be recycled. Recycling
old products cuts down on energy use and saves valuable resources such as fossil fuel
and trees. Recycling reduces pollution. It helps to control greenhouse gas emission
during production by using less energy.
5. Respond
Remember to sort trash. Maintain separate bins for compost, recycle, and landfill.
Vegetables peels and other naturally degradable matter can be composted. Make sure
you recycle or reuse glass and metal containers. Respond by discussing it with your
relatives and neighbors. Respond by doing together with the other R's

b. Healthy Residents and Healthy Community

Having a good health means having a good and healthy environment. Solid waste has
negative impact on our health. Without proper segregation and gets collected and
transported to the final dumpsites. If at this stage the residents and disposal is improperly
done, it can cause serious impacts on health of the residents and problems to the
surrounding environment.
Waste that is not properly managed, especially liquid and solid waste from households and
the community, are a serious health hazard and lead to the spread of infectious diseases.
Plastic waste is another cause for ill health. Thus, excessive solid waste that is generated
should be controlled by taking certain measures.
To avoid this, we must practice some personal hygiene and apply it.
While segregating wastes. Personal hygiene is a must.

Here are some personal hygiene that we should practice.

1. Washing your hands properly.

2. Taking a bath everyday.

Always remember that Health is Wealth.

3. Expectation after the implementation of Trash Bins

We all know that if we had a successful implementation and all of the rules and
regulations on proper segregation of solid waste are followed properly and implemented,
the project for sure was effective.
As a student and who is responsible for this proposal. I am expecting too much like what I
have discussed on the effectiveness of the proposed project. I'll expect that after the
implementation, the community has to be more cleaner than before.

Expectations:
a. Cleaner environment.
a. Discipline in segregating their waste.
b. Zero garbage
c. Cooperation of the Residents

Training and Craftmanship

In the week 5 of our campaign in waste management the activity is about recycling.
Every individual will gain knowledge on how to reuse does recyclable materials and
make it as a craft that can be used. The materials are from the garbage that can still be
used in this activity like plastic bottles, old newspaper and other things that can be
recycled. This activity will help them in their daily lives because they can apply it and
make it as their livelihood program.

Week 7 – Clean-up Drive

We decided to have a community service in sitio 4, Brgy. East Rembo to maintain the
barangay’s cleanliness and safety, because our program is about cleanliness and proper
waste segregation. We, the students volunteered to clean the community like sidewalk,
canals, and fully garbage segregation of the barangay.

Week 8 – Games and Feeding Program, and Awarding

Preparation:
a. Ask the permission of the Barangay.
a. Organize volunteers and staff.
b. Check the area for the event.
c. Organize volunteer registration area.
d. Prepare the materials needed.
e. Organize awards/certificate and decorations.
f. Prepare scripts or run sheets for ceremonies.

COMMUNITY IMMERSION

Observations

This photo was taken as soon as we arrived at the barangay hall and while waiting for our class
representatives presenting the project proposal to barangay officials. You can see that the
pictures was stolen, the smiles and laughers is visible even the sun was at its peak.

This was the photo in front of Tracy's house, waiting for our other classmate to arrived before
going straight to barangay hall for an observation. This photo shows the first time we went to
Barangay Hall.
Some of our guy classmates take a selfie while on the way to the barangay. At the back is the
street heading to the Barangay Hall.

Coordination to signing of MOA part

It took us 2-4 days of coming back and fourth

to the Barangay and Sitio post. Our
coordination with the project is what really
binds us all to pursue our goal.

For all the hard work, it eventually pays off

after getting this picture. We finally got an
appointment and in just a little while we will
get our signed MOA.

And here it is at January 29, Mrs. Thelma Ramirez, the Brgy. Captain of East Rembo, Makati
City signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). To wrap the story short, we can now
proceed with our program schedules.

The spirit of "unity" really conquers it all. This is one of the pictures taken after we got our
MOA. The evidence of happiness and satisfaction.

COMMUNITY INTEGRATION

Collection of recyclable materials

22 February 2019, collection day!!! The whole class goes together in Sitio 4, Barangay
East Rembo Makati. The day is so cool because it is the schedule that we will go around the
neighbor hood to collect some recyclable materials like empty plastic bottles, newspaper,
magazines and others that we can sell and the money that will be collected will be used for our
proposed project and seminar.

It’s a sunny day afternoon, but the class are all

energetic. We knocked all the houses to asked if they do have
some recyclable materials. It is nice that the community is
participating, because most them are not only giving us but also asking their neighbor to
spare/give us those recyclable stuff.

The barangay is also excited not only because

they already disposed their recyclable stuff, but also
because they knew that they will benefit from it. This
kind of positive attitude towards the future may result
to a clean environment. If the whole barangay will
apply and continue this practice, they’re not only
helping their community, but they are also help to
save the mother earth. And this will serve as a good
example and may lead to the new generation to
continue and do the good will.

While doing the collection, we manage to inform

and update the barangay about the importance of doing
recycling. That recycling is very important, because it is
one of the best ways for us to have a positive impact on
our community in which we live. We must act fast as the
amount of waste we create is increasing all the time.

Below are some of the important information that we

shared around the neighbor, because waste has a huge
negative impact on the natural environment

 Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste

 Recycling reduces the need for raw materials so that the rainforests can be preserved
 Recycling requires much less energy and therefore helps to preserve our natural
resources
We all agree in one point and that is
what ever we are doing is for our future
generation. But if we keep destroying our
environment in this place nothing will be left
for them. Recycling can help us and our
future generation. So, we should not waste
any minute to take proper steps to recycle
because every moment counts.

SEMINAR AND CRAFTMANSHIP TRAINING

On the 1st day of March 2019, the section I201 finally conducted The NSTP Seminar and
Craftsmanship Program, which is the most important activity of their subject. It was held at Sitio
4, brgy. East Rembo, Makati City.

Theme of the outreach program “Yes for cleanliness”

The program started with activities for children which included storytelling and art
activities. They were able to learn how to interact and play with other children and adults. They
were also given avenue to express their feelings and imagination through the art activities given
to them. After that, some of the students performed a simple yet energetic dance number.
Then, they awarded children with the most creative work.

The next part of the program was a seminar about the 5Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Re-
think and Respect. Most participants who attended were mothers. They were given important
information and useful tips on how they can help the environment. Afterwards, they were given a
craftmanship activity where they learned how to create and transform recyclable materials into
creative and useful things. With the creativity shown by the students, most of the participants
were amazed and entertained. The event was indeed very successful. The section I201 made sure
that they did their best. They were not only able to spread awareness but joy and positivity as
well in the community of Sitio 4, brgy. East Rembo, Makati City.

CLEAN-UP DRIVE
In our world, there almost 7 billion people and regularly we produce a huge amount of
waste from our daily life. If the waste does not manage in a regular basis then the amount of
waste will increase gradually and we will be unable to live just because of polluted
environment.
Every small thing matters. Sweeping and picking up trashes are the things we could do
to add beauty in an overwhelmingly beautiful community. Plastic bottles, dry leaves, plastic of
junkfoods, bananacue sticks, straws plastic cups, spoon and fork, etc. are trashes that need to
be collected, these are kind of pollutants and moreover, food that is being sold on the streets of
the barangay can greatly affected by pollution.
With voluntary clean-up drive of BSBA-I201 at Sitio-4 Barangay East Rembo, will also
help in bettering the atmosphere as it is a daily basis. The feeling of being in comfortable
environment, that resident living on a better community as all the litters, garbage would be
vanished and thrown away, away to prevent health problems—environment safety. By keeping
the gutters and drains clear this also reduces the chances of flooding in the event of heavy rain.
Our environment is a place where humans as well as plants and animals live. Keeping it clean
and neat is our own responsibility as one of the stakeholders of preserving our nature. It is
necessary to keep our environment clean.
We conclude that during our voluntary sweeping, we are having fun and enjoyed to
clean all the garbage’s in their surroundings to make it beautiful and clean when we foresee it.
We are also glad to see that barangay officials were so very happy and STI students are the
cause of giving them joy. We turn over to them the brooms and dustpan we used as we offered
it as a gift for the whole community.
“It is not only to have a clean environment, but ESSENTIAL.”
We divide ourselves in every corner of Sitio 4 in order for not to miss every kind of
trash.

Before we leave we don’t forget to

give our gift to the community and we are also happy that they were also happy.

We also don’t forget to treasure our day without a group photo.
