Exercise #4

Parametric Tests (Z-test for One Sample Group and Two Sample Means)

Name:_______________________________Course/Year/Section:______________

I. Explain Briefly.
1. When, Why, and How do you use Z-test for one sample group .
2. When, Why, and How do you use Z-test for Two Sample means.

II. Solve the following problems using the steps of Testing Hypothesis at 0.05
level of significance.

1. Problem
2. Hypotheses
3. Level of Significance
4. Statistics
5. Decision Rule
6. Conclusion

1. The mean grade point average for one college is 2.45 with a standard deviation
of .69. A Math Professor believes that MPM students have a higher grade point
average than the college’s mean. A sample of 20 MPM students had a mean
grade of 2.65. test the professor’s claim at a 0.05 level of significance.

2. A manager of a Fishing Company claims that the mean number of products

produced per shift is 145 items with a standard deviation of 10. The supervisor
believes each shift produces more than 145 items. In a sample of 36 shifts, the
mean number of items produced was 150. Does each shift produce more than
145 items? Test at the 0.05 level.

III. Solve the problem using SPSS or Excel to conduct statistical analysis at a
0.05 level of significance and following the steps of Testing Hypothesis.

3. An admission test was administered to incoming freshmen students in the

Graduate School with 30 Master in Public Management and 30 MS in Marine
Biodiversity students randomly selected, the following data are:

MPM MSMB MPM MSMB MPM MSMB

18 25 19 25 21 27
47 15 18 28 23 41
46 18 16 35 25 40
35 47 25 32 26 23
38 46 28 34 28 34
27 35 35 25 27 36
21 38 32 31 41 31
18 39 34 30 40 41
16 28 36 25 23 40
26 29 31 26 16 39
Is there a significant difference between the two groups? Use .05 level of
significance.
