Chlorophyll and photosynthesis
Aim: To determine the effect of light intensity and chlorophyll presence on photosynthesis of
Hibiscus and Bougainvillea leaves via a starch test and to measure photosynthesis and respiration
rates in an Elodea plant.

Method: As seen in BIOC2014 manual pages 50-53

Results:

Calculations
D= no. of drops of 0.02 N NaOH required to titrate darkened sample with plant
L= no. of drops of 0.02 N NaOH required to titrate lighted sample with plant
N= no. of drops of 0.02 N NaOH required to titrate sample without plant
V= volume of plant (ml)
T= duration of experiment (hrs)

Sample calculation
Rate of photosynthesis
D – L = micromoles of CO2 absorbed/ mL. plant/hour
VxT
36–18= micromoles of CO2 absorbed/ mL. plant/hour
1 x 1.5
= 12 micromoles of CO2 absorbed/ mL. plant/hour

Rate of respiration

D – N =micromoles CO2 evolved/ ml. plant/hour

VxT
36– 50 =micromoles CO2 evolved/ ml. plant/hour
1 x 1.5

= -9.3 micromoles CO2 evolved/ ml. plant/hour
